This issue contains articles on Clyde Bellecourt, education of Indian men in Stillwater prison and St. Cloud Reformatory School, political prisoners, and the case of Rita Silk Nauni. It also prints poetry from students and provides information about the Women of All Red Nations (WARN) health study and the Black Hills International Survival Gathering.

The range of topics covered in the papers presented at Flagstaff in April amply testify to the extraordinary variety of life and thought in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The papers are a tribute, too, to the vigor of contemporary scholarly interest in these two great historical-cultural epochs. (This review, it should be noted, is based upon the full paper in some instances and in others on both the paper and the pleasure of having been present at the time it was delivered, yet there are also several papers reported here of which I have seen only an abstract.)

In the pages that follow I have summarized the views of certain selected scholars whose emphases seem to illustrate changing and contrasting interpretations of the interaction of environment and culture on the Great Plains. I have grouped their writings into two inclusive categories. First come those whose conceptual schemes suggest the primacy of environmental variables. I refer to these scholars, perhaps simplistically, as environmentalists, even though this term has acquired a different meaning in recent years. In the second group are several scholars, selected more arbitrarily than the first, whose writings seem to accord more importance to cultural factors. For …

The relationship of the United States Government and the Apache Indians of Arizona and New Mexico was marred by thirty years of war. The thesis, of which this is an abstract, is an investigation into the appropriateness of selected aspects of United States policy toward the Apache in the years 1847-1887. The essential questions in this analysis and re-evaluation of policy are not why and how? did the United States prevail, but rather: Did the authorities understand the nature of the Apache? About eleven thousand years ago the earliest known human inhabitants of the Central Andean area began a lifestyle which developed into some of the richest cultures of the ancient American civilizations. The people living in this thirteen-hundred-mile arid mountain zone, which is now the nation of Peru, produced some of the most outstanding examples of ceramics in the world before the birth of Christ.

Logging In The Upper Cumberland River Valley: A Folk Industry, Steven Schulman

The purpose of this study is to examine the logging industry found along, the upper Cumberland River from the 1870s to the 1930s. Because the industry was very much a part of the economic lifeblood of the people of the region, the study will focus upon the loggers and raftsmen who worked with the timber. Any attempt to describe the lumber business alone would be futile due to the nature of the industry.
