A Study Of Historic Waterfront Revitalization : From Clarke Quay-Boat Quay, Singapore To Puerto Madero, Argentina, Ari Widyati Purwantiasning, Saeful Bahri, Lutfi Prayogi, Dedi Hantono, Sari Yeptadian, Valeria Schneider
Journal of Urban Culture Research
Many researchers have examined and discussed the study of revitalization, but a fewer still have discussed revitalization along riverbanks. This research aims to explore the revitalization of riverbank areas by focusing on and comparing two East and West locations. The Clarke Quay-Boat Quay area in Singapore – East and Puerto Madero, Argentina the West precedent. The research’s method was qualitative by comparing two precedent studies to seek the typology of the revitalization concept. This paper obtains results using a descriptive narrative approach to describe the analysis of both precedent studies. In conclusion, it was found that both precedent studies have …

Culture Sustainability Through Storytelling : A Study Of Patricia Riley’S “Wisteria” And “Damping Down The Road”, Ankita Das, Priyanka Chhaparia
Journal of Urban Culture Research
In the late 1980s, the United Nations introduced a comprehensive vision of sustainable development, encompassing economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental balance. However, the crucial role of culture within development has very often been overlooked. Contemporary insights emphasize that culture is integral to sustainable development. This paper, through an analysis of two short stories by Native American author Patricia Riley, sheds light on the significance of storytelling as a fundamental element of culture. It explores how these narratives emphasize the need to cultivate a culturally aware society and how ‘storytelling’ contributes to cultural preservation and identity. Focusing specifically on the …

Liminality & Festivities Facilitating Pandemic Fatigue : Songkran And The Third Wave Of Covid-19 Outbreak In Thailand, Steve Kwok-Leung Chan
Journal of Urban Culture Research
Asian countries were outstanding performers in preventing COVID-19 initially, but many suffered from a new wave of the outbreak in mid-2020. These countries sealed off their borders from the possible spread of the virus from outside. For more than one year, social distancing restrictions were applied and successfully kept the infection rates at a low level. Drawing on the initial findings of Chang et al. (2020) on the spread of the infectious disease intracity and intercity during festivals, this paper examines the outbreaks, with a probe into the case of Songkran, or the Water Festival of Thailand. The author found …

Rasulan As A Javanese Slametan Tradition On Compromising The Changing Of Society, Sartini Sartini, Supartiningsih Supartiningsih, Sriyulita Pramulia Panani, Adita Nurdia Damayanti, Anwar Ibrahim Triyoga
Journal of Urban Culture Research
Rasulan is a tradition in Java; it's one form of Javanese Slametan (a ritual meal). This research aims to describe the Rasulan, explains the role of the worldview and how the elements of culture, religion and the spirit of the nationality are compromised and changed therein. This research is a mix of library and field studies, utilizing the theory of worldview. Results show that Rasulan is not a religious tradition, but a harvest celebration, taking the form of gratitude in the agrarian society. It consists of world views of space, time, causality and self-other relationships, which constructs how people …
Contemporaneity Decolonizing Knowledge & Independency, Jay Koh
Contemporaneity Decolonizing Knowledge & Independency, Jay Koh
Journal of Urban Culture Research
This article discusses the platform and selected texts from Journal of Urban Culture Research (JUCR), in relation to contemporary turns from the 60s on participation and diversity in responses to the making of an open society to the 80s on decolonization of knowledge from the enlightenment trajectory. Only lately, these ideas of ’decolonization’ has gained traction in our regions and we need to be careful not to mix the meaning of this term with the fight for independence after the WWII by colonized nations or criticism of the concept of orientalism and the construction of racial stereotypes. Discussed turns on …

From Farm To Table To Factory: Paths Of Cambodian American Foodways, A. C. Smith
From Farm To Table To Factory: Paths Of Cambodian American Foodways, A. C. Smith
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This thesis analyzes the history of Cambodian Americans using theoretical frameworks utilized by food studies scholars. Cambodian refugees and their families experienced a historical process that I describe as being “from farm to table to factory.” Many Cambodians maintained a self-sufficient agricultural lifestyle prior to the Cambodian Civil War. As Cambodian refugees resettled in the United States, they faced a slew of challenges in navigating urban infrastructures and governmental institutions, as well as in adjusting to hegemonic discourses. Such issues constitute a metaphorical table to which Cambodians needed to adjust as they made their lives in the US. Adaptation also …

Beyond Borders : A Comprehensive Exploration Of Tumpat, Kelantan's Culture-Infused Economic Landscape, Sui Chai Yap, Kah Choon Ng
Journal of Urban Culture Research
The culture-based economy holds a crucial role in rural Southeast Asian regions, yet it remains relatively unexplored. This study delves into traditional food products, handicrafts, and cultural goods, examining their factors and significance in Tumpat, Kelantan. Employing semi-structured interviews with local entrepreneurs and inductive content analysis, the research identifies two main categories: factors influencing business initiation and the significance of a clustered pattern in culture-based enterprises. Business location in Tumpat is notably influenced by familial land heritage, resource accessibility, transportation convenience, and labor availability. Businesses adopt a clustered pattern to reduce production costs, share information, and enhance market reach. Beyond …

Internal Outsiders In The Domestic Cold War: The Impact Of Engineering U.S. Culture And Citizenship In Early Cold War America On Black And Jewish Identities, Helen A. Landau
Scripps Senior Theses
In the decade following World War II, movements for social change and Cold War paranoia grew simultaneously and were both reflected in popular culture. However, as the United States attempted to combat Soviet propaganda and present a very specific image of Americanism to the world, federal scrutiny focused on minority groups and individuals whose work drew attention to the complexities and inequalities within American society. In the shadow of the threat of communism, containment measures within the United States attempted to hinder flourishing new movements for social change and solidified a restrictive definition of Americanism. Frances Stonor Saunders explored the …
Still Sticking To The Big Brother: History, German Protestantism, And The Ukrainian War, Katharina Kunter
Still Sticking To The Big Brother: History, German Protestantism, And The Ukrainian War, Katharina Kunter
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
It has often been revealed, in the great historical upheavals of contemporary history, that a quick, situational ad-hoc assessment and reaction is not the strength of German Protestantism. This was the case after the collapse of Imperial Germany (Kaiserreich) and the sovereign church regiment (Landesherrliches Kirchenregiment; summus episcopus) in 1918, as well as after the end of the Second World War, when German Protestantism was long at odds with democracy and Adenauer's ties to the West.4 The Peaceful Revolution in the GDR in 1989 (during the civic uprisings of 1989/90 in the other Central European countries) also surprised the leaders …

Homenaje a Victòria Solanilla Demestre

Homenaje a Victòria Solanilla Demestre

Mysteries Of The Gothic, Addison Duvall
Mysteries Of The Gothic, Addison Duvall
CMC Senior Theses
By examining the histories of the Notre-Dame and Chartres cathedrals, I will consider three academic schools of thought regarding the high Gothic Cathedrals: the balanced and rational feat of engineering, the communal and social rituals that bond humans to this space, and the iconographic manifestation of the supernatural. Functionalist engineering paradoxically lays at the heart of these cathedrals' capacity to open the human consciousness to the sacred by using recurrent symbolic patterns from nature, music and mathematics to create divine ratios that transport us. Integrated into these larger architectural designs the repeating visual patterns exalting both biblical and supernatural icons …
As Below So Above: Reconstructing The Neo-Babylonian Worldview, Heather Marie Burrow
As Below So Above: Reconstructing The Neo-Babylonian Worldview, Heather Marie Burrow
CGU Theses & Dissertations
To add to our knowledge about a Near Eastern culture, this project examines through textual evidence how the early first millennium BCE Neo-Babylonians thought, reasoned, and wrote in order to partially reconstruct the shared, generally held worldview of the Neo-Babylonian people using the transdisciplinary approach of worldview analysis. Worldviews are what we use to think with, not what we think about. Underlying surficial cultural behaviors are deeper levels of cognition regarding how to reason, perceive the world, prioritize values, prescribe behavior, and explain all of life. Specifically, this work examines the language and logic reflected in the textual archive, believing …

Don Mula (Original Dance) And The “Sacred Sound”Of Buddhism: Performing Collective Identity Among The Pwo Karen In Thung Yai, Thailand, Jarun Kanchanapradit, Sooi Beng Tan
Journal of Urban Culture Research
The Don Mula (Original Dance) represents an important part of the collective consciousness and identity of the Pwo Karen people in the Laiwo sub-district, Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary in Western Thailand. Due to modernization and changes that have occurred in Karen society at the turn of the millennium, many functions of the dance have been transformed. While the dance continues to be performed to pay respect to the Rice Goddess, it is employed to educate the younger generation about Buddhist knowledge and Karen beliefs as expressions of "Karen-ness." Through in-depth interviews and a study of the musical lyrics and …

From Displaced To Displacers: Scottish Crofters, First Nation Peoples And Commons Enclosure From The 1700s To The 1800s, Anna Herrington
Theses and Dissertations--History
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the enclosure of common systems shaped the displacement of people on a global scale whilst bringing the people---Scottish Highland crofters and Mi’kmaq First Nation Canadians from the margins where they have dwelled for centuries in historical scholarship to of the centre of not just their history, but our collective history. Both populations experienced attacks on their ties to their lands, resources, and culture through enclosure. The enclosure process lasted over two centuries and was interspersed with violent protest, proactive resistance, interspersed with periods of acceptance and determination against their forced removals. Investigating …
