Ua35/11 Student Honors Bulletin, Vol. I, No. 1, Wku Honors Program

WKU Administration Documents

Articles written by honors program students. They were originally research projects, class papers or essays written for academic credit, but in each case the student has done further work editing and improving his or her manuscript for this publication. The articles represent a broad range of interests and disciplines, and they indicate a healthy attempt on the part of at least some students to dig for deeper knowledge and understanding than is usually associated with undergraduate study.

A Documentation Of Assiniboine Heritage, Maude Caroline Hollow

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to identify the origin of the Assiniboine language dialect within the Sioux Confederacy; to trace the tribe's migrations by means of written historical documentations of the early frontiersmen, in order to establish the territorial domain of the Assiniboine; to examine the uniqueness of the Assiniboine culture and philosophy; to examine the legal documents which established the Assiniboine on the Fort Peck Reservation in Montana; and finally, to assess the status of the Assiniboine tribal sovereignty within the Sioux Confederacy.

The Indian Captivity Narrative: An American Genre, Richard Van Der Beets Jan 1973

The Indian Captivity Narrative: An American Genre, Richard Van Der Beets

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The vast body of Indian captivity narratives is known mostly to historians, anthropologists, and collectors of Americana. In the rare instances where informed scholarship has turned its attention to the narratives, emphasis has been upon the historical and cultural rather than the literary value of the tales. The Indian captivity narrative has been most commonly viewed as but a thread in the loose fabric of American cultural history, consisting of several "popular," sub-literary genres shaped and differentiated largely by the society for which the narratives were intended. The intention in this study is not so much to overturn that view …

Interview With James B. Boyd, James B. Boyd, Bill Foerster, Robert Norton Dec 1972

Interview With James B. Boyd, James B. Boyd, Bill Foerster, Robert Norton

Rio Grande Valley Oral Histories

James B. Boyd describes six Native American archeological sites he had mapped in western Hidalgo County, beginning with discoveries near La Joya Creek and a school construction site. He detailed artifacts such as Matamoros points, Tortugas dart points, scrapers, and crude stone tools found across multiple visits, noting variations in richness depending on site disturbance. The final site, Chihuahua Hill, stood out as unusually rich for Hidalgo County, though Boyd emphasized these sites were modest compared to larger finds in neighboring counties and northern Mexico. Fort Berthold Indian Reservation: A Land Use Study To 1971, Paul Felter May 1972

Fort Berthold Indian Reservation: A Land Use Study To 1971, Paul Felter

Theses and Dissertations

Can the land resources of a contemporary Indian reservation provide the basis for a self~sufficient community? To help answer that question, this study traces the agricultural development as well as other land use programs and problems of the Three Tribes of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota.

The procedure involved a detailed study of the impact of Bureau of Indian Affairs-inspired agricultural projects, treaties and land cession agreements, land allotment programs, land fractionalization, and the building of the Garrison Dam. The results obtained show that the semi-agricultural Three Tribes passed from self-sufficiency before their reservation was established into …
