Arts-Based Interventions To Enhance The Quality Of Life And Cognition Of The Elderly With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Khanobbhorn Sangvanich, Itthipol Tawankanjanachot, Sookjaroen Tangwongchai
Journal of Urban Culture Research
This art activities program was designed to enhance the aesthetics, mood, cognition, and quality of life (QoL) of elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The control group was given a single session of MCI knowledge, whereas the intervention group attended weekly art activities, based on visual thinking strategies, combined with cognitive development of aesthetic experience and contemplative arts for six weeks. There was no difference between the Thai Geriatric Depressive Scale (TGDS) scores or Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores between the two groups. However, the intervention group showed statistically significant improvement of Quality of Life, compared to the control …

Contemporaneity Decolonizing Knowledge & Independency, Jay Koh
Journal of Urban Culture Research
This article discusses the platform and selected texts from Journal of Urban Culture Research (JUCR), in relation to contemporary turns from the 60s on participation and diversity in responses to the making of an open society to the 80s on decolonization of knowledge from the enlightenment trajectory. Only lately, these ideas of ’decolonization’ has gained traction in our regions and we need to be careful not to mix the meaning of this term with the fight for independence after the WWII by colonized nations or criticism of the concept of orientalism and the construction of racial stereotypes. Discussed turns on …

Characterization And The Aesthetic Representation Of Violence In The Graphic Novel "Esperaré Siempre Tu Regreso", By Jordi Peidro, Deirdre Kelly
Books/Book Chapters
The graphic novel, Esperaré siempre tu regreso (2016, Desfiladero Ediciones) by the author and illustrator, Jordi Peidro (Alcoy, 1965), is a biographical and historical text that centres on the life in exile of Francisco Aura Boronat (or Paco Aura, Alcoy, 1918-2018), a Spanish communist and Republican who survived the horrors of the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria. Drawing on comics studies and memory studies, the analysis will discuss how Peidro navigates ethical and aesthetic issues when representing traumatic and violent memories related to the Spanish experience of Civil War, exile and deportation to a Nazi concentration camp. Firstly, it will …
Childhood: The Hidden Side, Arcelia Gómez
Childhood: The Hidden Side, Arcelia Gómez
MA Projects
Childhood has been typically perceived as the sweet, candid, innocent, harmless, naïve phase of the human existence. However, is it possible that behind this kind façade there are hidden the cruelest, most frightening and most devastating monsters of humankind? The current state of humanity, as a species, is constructed on constant movement, continually changing, perpetually evolving. This is a natural behavior, dating back to the very origins of civilization, in its earliest days. This characteristic detail is stored in the ability of the human brain to collect information and learn from situations experienced by the individual. In other words, the …

Cityscape Under The Gaze Of Migrant Women : The Reimagination Of Urban World In Vietnamese Independent Films, Cam Giang Hoang
Cityscape Under The Gaze Of Migrant Women : The Reimagination Of Urban World In Vietnamese Independent Films, Cam Giang Hoang
Journal of Urban Culture Research
In Vietnam, since the Reform era (1986) and the government’s firm urbanization policy, replacing the pre-1986 discourse of the countryside as the Garden of Eden, a myth of the city as a place of endless pleasure has been gradually built up in mass media. As a result, the urban spectacle has become the ideal symbol of the speed of development, national strength, and masculinity in state-sponsored and commercial movies/dramas. Meanwhile, through the ‘slow cinema,’ independent female directors such as Siu Pham, Nguyen Hoang Diep, Bui Kim Quy, Pham Hoang Minh Thy, and Pham Nhue Giang have questioned the ‘urban fantasy’ …

Schultz-Werth Award Papers
Genevieve Forbes-Herrick gave her thoughts on Maurine Watkins’ new play “Chicago” in the October 16th, 1927, edition of the Chicago Tribune. Forbes-Herrick requested that the management reserve a block of seats for a few local women who “tarried on the fourth floor of the building at Dearborn Street and Austin Avenue long enough to get themselves into a play”. In Forbes-Herrick’s opinion, Beulah Annan should have been given an aisle seat for her incredible beauty, inspiring the character named Roxie. The next best seat should have gone to the incredibly stylish Belva Gaertner to witness the characterization of Velma. Moonshine …

Tejiendo imágenes. Homenaje a Victòria Solanilla Demestre

Book Review L Boats In A Storm: Law, Migration, And Decolonization In South And Southeast Asia, 1942–1962 By Kalyani Ramnath (Stanford University Press 2023), Anwesha Ghosh
Articles
Kalyani Ramnath’s Boats in a Storm undertakes the formidable task of retelling the histories of decolonisation in India, Burma, Malaya, and Ceylon using characters who would rarely fit the description of conventional historical actors. Ramnath departs from the rich political and diplomatic histories that celebrate the independence of nation states from the yoke of imperial rule. Instead, she focuses on the ways in which these states, with their newly re-instituted legislative, juridical, and bureaucratic regimes, wreaked havoc on the lives of itinerant migrants who straddled between ‘homes’ and places of work across the Bay of Bengal and eastern Indian Ocean …

Mysteries Of The Gothic, Addison Duvall
Mysteries Of The Gothic, Addison Duvall
CMC Senior Theses
By examining the histories of the Notre-Dame and Chartres cathedrals, I will consider three academic schools of thought regarding the high Gothic Cathedrals: the balanced and rational feat of engineering, the communal and social rituals that bond humans to this space, and the iconographic manifestation of the supernatural. Functionalist engineering paradoxically lays at the heart of these cathedrals' capacity to open the human consciousness to the sacred by using recurrent symbolic patterns from nature, music and mathematics to create divine ratios that transport us. Integrated into these larger architectural designs the repeating visual patterns exalting both biblical and supernatural icons …
Want To Be A Cowboy? The Struggle For Identity In Rodeo, Colton Wagner
Want To Be A Cowboy? The Struggle For Identity In Rodeo, Colton Wagner
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
This thesis examines the identity struggle for cowboys and competitors in rodeo from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century in North America. The evolution of rodeo is a rich topic as various people sought a space within its competitive sphere. The sport of rodeo often reflects the dominant social movements within the United States, but it intermittently allowed marginalized groups a public space to exist and fight against the erasure of their ideas and culture. The origins of rodeo as a sport, from the foundations of horsemanship and ranching to the rise of performativity in the West, provide …
The Transformation Of Cherokee Medicial Practices And The Hesitations That Surround Them, Rebecca Bills
The Transformation Of Cherokee Medicial Practices And The Hesitations That Surround Them, Rebecca Bills
Theses
Studies on traditional Cherokee medicine during the 1800s explained Cherokee religious beliefs and the treatments they used to heal the members of their community. However, no updated research has been done to see if Cherokees are still using traditional medicine and if they are, which kinds are they using in the 21st century. This is in part due to the fact that Native Americans and the U.S. government have a complicated relationship from centuries of mistreatment, broken treaties, and the removal from their ancestral homelands. This has created a distrust between native and non-natives. Today, traditional healers' identities are protected …

Dooming America: Conspiracy And Apocalypticism In The Populist Evangelical And White Nationalist Imaginations, Zachary W. Gipson
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Scholarship on American evangelicalism and its historical intersection with the ideology and activities of White Nationalism has typically focused on identifying shared cultural affinities in areas related broadly to the values and objectives of historic conservatism. These include issues of traditional patriarchy and gender roles, racial and/or religious prejudice, anti-immigrant views, and hostile responses to progressive socio-cultural change. Sociological, psychological, political and other frames of analysis applied to the study of American evangelicalism’s historical and cultural crossover with White Nationalism also identifies shared tendencies towards operating with conspiratorial and apocalyptic beliefs and frames of mind. To date, no comprehensive historical …

The “Broken Reed Of A Staff”: The Pawnee Agency, Pawnees, And Agent W. De Puy, 1861–1862, R. Paul Collister
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In January 1863 Henry W. De Puy published an open letter to the President. Through the previous year De Puy’s administration at the Pawnee Agency at Genoa, Nebraska Territory (N.T.), had been wrecked and he had been accused of stealing from the Pawnees and his own employees. The Indian Commissioner’s Office had turned him out of office without a hearing. Even President Lincoln had not seen fit to intervene on the agent’s behalf in a department of the President’s own executive branch. De Puy did not want his old job back. He seems to have been sincere in his desire …

Don Mula (Original Dance) And The “Sacred Sound”Of Buddhism: Performing Collective Identity Among The Pwo Karen In Thung Yai, Thailand, Jarun Kanchanapradit, Sooi Beng Tan
Journal of Urban Culture Research
The Don Mula (Original Dance) represents an important part of the collective consciousness and identity of the Pwo Karen people in the Laiwo sub-district, Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary in Western Thailand. Due to modernization and changes that have occurred in Karen society at the turn of the millennium, many functions of the dance have been transformed. While the dance continues to be performed to pay respect to the Rice Goddess, it is employed to educate the younger generation about Buddhist knowledge and Karen beliefs as expressions of "Karen-ness." Through in-depth interviews and a study of the musical lyrics and …

Identifying The Key Value Of Urban Architectural Heritages Vis-A-Vis Human Awareness : Case Study In Hanoi, Nhu Dao Thi
Journal of Urban Culture Research
Conservation of urban architectural heritage works (UAH) is an important test for cities to increase their cultural and economic competitiveness. However, UAH preservation mostly focuses on physical value, which results in a contradiction between conservation and development. Moreover, new contexts of 4.0 technology and urbanization are deepening the impermanence, transformation of all things, in which of people and their awareness - the beneficiaries of UAHs. Therefore, heritage conservation is facing a big problem related to the truly worthy values of UAH that need to be preserved to meet the development needs, society's change and the growing maturity of people's awareness. …
The Survival Of Punic Identity In The Imperial Roman Age, Ryan Alcanio
The Survival Of Punic Identity In The Imperial Roman Age, Ryan Alcanio
Theses
After the Roman conquest of Carthage in 146 BC, North Africa began the process of becoming a Roman Province. From the 1st century AD onward, the surviving culture of the Carthaginian and Punic peoples underwent significant changes that better incorporated it into the Roman world. The Punic religion became adopted into the Roman Pantheon and took on Roman attributes while the Punic language survived mostly intact thanks to the written form adopting the Latin alphabet by the 2nd century AD.

Impacts On Native American Literacy Throughout The 1800s, Alyssa Lawhorn
Undergraduate Research Awards
The literacy of Indigenous peoples of America underwent extreme transformations as the tedious attempts by descendants of colonizers to integrate aspects of white American life into Indigenous customs continued. Native American literacy exclusively consisted of oral traditions prior to the arrival of British colonizers in 1607 in Jamestown, Virginia. These oral traditions were, and still are, key elements of Indigenous culture as they serve to distribute cultural lessons, record histories, and share religious legends through the generations and amongst others. As the basis of Indigenous culture these traditions were one of the primary features of Native American life that scholars …
Rome & Her Greatest Theatric: The Controversies Of Emperor Nero, Zoie A. Dean
Rome & Her Greatest Theatric: The Controversies Of Emperor Nero, Zoie A. Dean
Tenor of Our Times
Emperor Nero was the last of the four Julio-Claudian emperors and has been considered to be one of worst emperors of Rome. The Roman scholars and Christians historians were some of his greatest foes, and the only ones left to tell his story. This paper takes a second look at these ancient sources and addresses what modern scholars have discovered about the true nature of Nero. Though he has been painted as clueless and childlike, in reality, Nero was much more cold and calculated than anyone had gave him credit for.
