Understanding Caesar’S Ethnography: A Contextual Approach To Protohistory, Erin Osborne Martin
Understanding Caesar’S Ethnography: A Contextual Approach To Protohistory, Erin Osborne Martin
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
The Celts of western and central Europe1 flourished during the height of Greek and Roman civilization, and yet there is a methodological schism between the study of the Mediterranean world and that of the “peripheral” Europeans. Our appreciation of classical society stems primarily from the plentiful written texts – texts that provide us with minute details of society, religion, and politics from the words of the people who actively participated in that culture. The study of the Celts, on the other hand, is more oblique: our primary source is archaeology, and what little textual evidence we do have derives from …

That Fine Little House, Rosalie Otero
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
I was intrigued by Sam Schuman’s allegory about liberal arts education using Virginia Lee Burton’s story of The Little House. Sam points out that it was not the little house that changed, but its neighborhood. I would argue that not only the neighborhood changed, but what went on inside the little house. Like most people, my first house was small, and the activities that went on within our house generally centered around a young family and a new career. As the years progressed, I moved to a larger house, and the activities changed from managing teenagers to grandchildren and …

When I came to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln last year, I was not only impressed by the faculty and administration, but inspired by the potential to move UNL research to a new level of excellence. In the past fiscal year, we’ve experienced exceptional growth. Our total sponsored programs awards grew 25 percent, which is a direct result of our strategic initiatives that provide new resources, leverage existing resources, develop grantsmanship skills and increase collaborations …

Challenges Of Growing Research At New And Emerging Heis, Ellen Hazelkorn
Challenges Of Growing Research At New And Emerging Heis, Ellen Hazelkorn
Books/Book chapters
Newer institutions are accused of adopting the accoutrements of traditional universities, actively copying their research profile and teaching programmes, and engaging in ‘academic’ or ‘mission’ drift. For others, however, these changes are part of the natural or inevitable process of institutional development and historical change, or a further step in the democratisation of the ‘Humboltian ethic’ (Neave, 2000, p265). If massification and expansion in 1960s differentiated the second stage in higher educational development from its elite origins, then the late 1990s marked the beginning of the third stage. By then, it was clear that a broadly educated population could no …

Program To Program Articulation: Progress, Perceptions, And Procedures For Articulation From Two-Year Programs To Four-Year Programs, Brenda L. Sullivan
Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of two-year and four-year students, faculty, and chief academic officers related to articulation practices in existence. Additionally, this study was designed to determine the desired components for a successful articulation and transfer system and identify any significant differences that exist between current and ideal articulation practices. Furthermore, this study investigated the feasibility for an articulation officer to oversee transfer procedures and a statewide course numbering system. To accomplish the goals of this study, after review of literature on articulation and transfer practices, six research questions were developed. Survey instruments, …
