Exploring How Rural Schools And Communities Influence The Academic Journeys Of College Students In Stem Majors, Elise J. Cain, Anne Valauri, Jennifer R. Perry, Aliyah Deloach
The Rural Educator
An incongruence exists between the growing job opportunities in rural areas and the educational opportunities provided to rural students, especially in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Positive change is possible, however. As one means to tackle this complex issue, this study sought to understand the perceptions and experiences of students who graduated from rural high schools and pursued STEM majors in college as exemplars of rural students who pursued postsecondary education in STEM disciplines. This phenomenological study explored how college students in STEM majors perceived their rural schools and communities as influencing their academic journeys. Rather than focusing …
Rural Teacher Preparation In The State Of Alabama, Avington Medeiros, Eva Kane
Rural Teacher Preparation In The State Of Alabama, Avington Medeiros, Eva Kane
The Rural Educator
Rural teacher recruitment and retention is a matter of interest for the state of Alabama as policymakers look to understand teacher shortages in rural schools across the state. How teachers are prepared to teach in rural schools is an essential part of rural teacher recruitment and retention. Preservice teachers need exposure to rural contexts as a part of their teacher preparation programs. This study examined how teacher preparation programs in Alabama are integrating rural-specific components. Among the 25 teacher preparation programs in Alabama, nearly 25% reported integrating three or more rural-specific components into their teacher preparation programs. Some teacher preparation …
Rural Students Find Their Voice On A College Campus, Ann K. Schulte, Karen Schreder
Rural Students Find Their Voice On A College Campus, Ann K. Schulte, Karen Schreder
The Rural Educator
For rural students, finding one’s voice and identity on a college campus and developing a sense of belonging are important for engagement and degree persistence. Rural affinity groups can create a feeling of comfort or connection that affirms students’ place identity and can lead to a more successful college experience. Additionally, an organized group of students can be a resource for the university to learn more about rural places, cultivate collaborations with rural communities, and develop a positive rural narrative. At California State University, Chico, the North State Student Ambassadors are paid student representatives of their rural communities. They do …

Faculty Perceptions Of College Readiness: A Phenomenological Study At A Two-Year College, Jackie Jackson
Faculty Perceptions Of College Readiness: A Phenomenological Study At A Two-Year College, Jackie Jackson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The purpose of this study is to explore how faculty at a two-year college experience college readiness in their classrooms. A phenomenological approach was used to understand the lived experiences of each college faculty participant. Data was gathered through six individual semi-structured interviews via Zoom. The participants were unlimited full-time faculty who teach entry-level coursework and were recruited via email from academic deans. All participants were assigned numbers for anonymity in the interviews, data analysis, and data descriptions. All research data was kept securely with password protection and/or only accessible to the researcher. This study uses Conley’s Four Facets of …

“I Know How Much He Cares For Our Learning”: Moral Life In University Elt Classrooms, Leila Tajik, Seyyed Abdolhamid Mirhosseini, Mahsa Kashkooli
The Qualitative Report
In Iran’s higher education English language teaching (ELT) context, we explored the moral nuances embedded in two conversation courses offered to undergraduate students majoring in English Literature at one of the branches of the Islamic Azad University (IAU) in Tehran. We collected data through classroom observations, field notes, and semi-structured individual and focus group interviews. Our content analysis revealed a range of moral values embedded in significant incidents, which we categorized into five themes: (a) relations, (b) rules and regulations, (c) assessment, (d) curricular substructure, and (I) culture. These themes were further subcategorized into more specific concepts that emerged from …

The Responsible Research In Business And Management (Rrbm) Community: Responsible Management Education And Impactful Research, Howard Thomas
The Responsible Research In Business And Management (Rrbm) Community: Responsible Management Education And Impactful Research, Howard Thomas
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Recently there has been a noticeable ‘turning point’ in the thinking of business school leaders and their stakeholders about the impact, purpose and value of business schools in society. Evidence from faculty, students and professional organisations, such as the Aspen Institute surveys in the United States of America (US) and the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) manifesto on the future of management education, clearly suggests that there should be a much greater focus on tackling pressing societal issues, including sustainability (e.g., the UN Sustainable Development Goals), inequality, and social and financial inclusion. More balanced and holistic models of management …

The Shared Experiences Of Novice, Full-Time Allied Dental Community College Educators, Misty L. Mesimer
The Shared Experiences Of Novice, Full-Time Allied Dental Community College Educators, Misty L. Mesimer
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
A well-prepared oral healthcare workforce is essential to the overall health of the general population. A knowledgeable and qualified workforce would be non-existent without strong academic programs and faculty to prepare oral health professionals. For over 20 years, the dental and allied dental educator workforce has been a concern for the oral health professions. Since most allied dental education programs are based in community and technical colleges, it is crucial to thoroughly understand the transition experiences of faculty teaching at these institutions. It is only through application and use of this knowledge that these faculty can be recruited, supported, and …
A Comparison Of Specialized And General Orientation Courses For Community College Students, Heather R. Sorrell
A Comparison Of Specialized And General Orientation Courses For Community College Students, Heather R. Sorrell
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
This study examined the effect of specialized orientation courses on community college student academic achievement and retention. The study utilized a quantitative design and compared the outcomes of specialized orientation courses to a more generalized orientation course. Due to the lack of previous research, there was little to suggest either a positive or a negative influence on student success measures for a targeted, specialized version of orientation courses. The study found that achievement outcomes did not differ between specialized orientation courses and general orientation courses. The study did find retention differences based on the type of orientation course completed. Students …
Community College Student Affairs Professionals’ Perceptions Of Their Supervisor’S Authentic Leadership: The Influence On Job Satisfaction And Organizational Commitment, Brent Lamar Via
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Employee retention is an ongoing challenge for higher education student affairs professionals, who account for the largest employee group across the higher education workforce. Job satisfaction and organizational commitment have previously been identified as correlated with college and university employees’ decision to stay or vacate their position. Authentic leadership, an evolving theory, has been associated with greater levels of job satisfaction and organizational commitment in a variety of settings. However, there is a gap in the literature about the status of this relationship within community college student affairs work environments. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship …
An Examination Of The Perceptions Of Campus Safety Among Full-Time Faculty At Virginia Community Colleges, Hailey Ann Hermosa
An Examination Of The Perceptions Of Campus Safety Among Full-Time Faculty At Virginia Community Colleges, Hailey Ann Hermosa
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
The view that colleges are generally safe has been challenged by threats of violence on campuses across the country, causing fear among stakeholders. Community college faculty are not immune to crime-related fear on campus; however, the research has largely ignored this population. This research serves to fill that gap.
The purpose of this nonexperimental quantitative study was to examine perceptions of campus safety among full-time faculty at Virginia community colleges. An electronic Likert-type scale survey was disseminated to a sample of 472 full-time faculty throughout seven Virginia community colleges of varying sizes. Of those, 135 (28.7%) voluntarily participated in the …
Work-Life Balance Fantasy Logics Of Mothers Working In Community Colleges: A Glitch Methodology Using Intimate Inquiry And Aesthetic Mediation, Emily Hanson Moore
Work-Life Balance Fantasy Logics Of Mothers Working In Community Colleges: A Glitch Methodology Using Intimate Inquiry And Aesthetic Mediation, Emily Hanson Moore
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
This post-qualitative study explores work-life balance as a sustaining fantasy produced by neoliberal, patriarchal, productivity-driven systems and how this fantasy manifests affectively for mothers who work in community colleges. The study began by contextualizing the work-life balance fantasy within higher education as a gendered workscape. Using intimate inquiry (Laura, 2013) and aesthetic meditation as the primary approaches, the researcher engaged in conversations with participants about their experiences mothering and working in community colleges. The primary data sources were these conversations, participant artifacts, researcher self-reflection and artifacts, and a range of contemporary cultural texts including podcasts, poetry, television, social media posts …

Medical Faculty Perceptions On Faculty Development In The Southeast United States, Melinda Turner
Medical Faculty Perceptions On Faculty Development In The Southeast United States, Melinda Turner
Ed.D. Dissertations
Medical school faculty often lack formal training in effective teaching methods, posing a challenge to their ability to deliver high-quality education. To facilitate high-quality teaching and help medical faculty grow professionally, academically, and scholarly, the burden for training faculty was placed on each medical school’s faculty development program to become individualized to meet faculty, institutional, and ultimately, student needs. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine medical faculty’s perception of faculty development at the Charles School of Medicine and their perceptions of how faculty development for medical educators made a difference in what medical faculty learned, how …
