"A Life Altering And Special Journey": The Lasting Impact Of Mindfulness On Semester-Long Study Abroad Participants, Ana Conboy, Kevin Clancy
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
Education abroad is held up as a high-impact practice with the potential to engage college and university students in a transformative learning experience (Kuh, 2008). The Institute for International Education (IIE) reports that 347,099 U.S. students received academic credit for study abroad during the 2018-2019 academic school year (IIE). Extensive research into student learning gains abroad have demonstrated that developing student metacognition, or one’s ability to be intentionally self-reflective, is central to transformative learning in the study abroad experience (Vande Berg et al., 2012; Zull, 2012). Consequently, international educators are continually searching for pedagogies (praxis) to facilitate metacognitive learning within …

Faculty’S Role In Creating A (Remote) Sense Of Community Among Faculty And Facilitating Contexts Of Care For Students, Jesus R. Nunez, Jesus Cisneros, Isela Pena
Higher Learning Research Communications
Objectives: This qualitative study employed a sensemaking approach to understand faculty members’ sensemaking of their roles during the COVID-19 pandemic and the emergency transition to remote teaching and learning.
Methods: An email invitation to participate in the study was sent to faculty who taught in an MBA program during both the 2019–2020 and 2020–2021 academic school years. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 14 faculty members who self-selected to participate in the study.
Results: Two salient themes emerged from the research: creating a (remote) sense of community among faculty and facilitating contexts of care for students. These …
Incivility In Accelerated Bachelor Of Science In Nursing Programs Post-Covid-19: A Faculty Perspective, Kimberly A. Burrows
Incivility In Accelerated Bachelor Of Science In Nursing Programs Post-Covid-19: A Faculty Perspective, Kimberly A. Burrows
Doctor of Education Program Dissertations
This qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of nursing faculty who taught in accelerated Bachelor of Science in nursing (ABSN) programs and their perceptions of incivility in nursing programs, particularly in the aftermath of the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) restrictions. This researcher defined incivility as rude, discourteous, disruptive, or threatening speech or action within the nursing academic environment. Drawing upon the literature highlighting the existence of incivility in nursing programs, this researcher aimed to understand faculty perceptions following the pandemic. The data was collected through eight semi-structured interviews with eight nursing faculty members in New Jersey-based hybrid and in-person …

The Symbiosis Of Volunteerism: A Story Of One Academic Library Welcoming Volunteers, Shan Martinez
The Symbiosis Of Volunteerism: A Story Of One Academic Library Welcoming Volunteers, Shan Martinez
The Christian Librarian
Although public and school libraries, as well as many non-profit organizations regularly utilize volunteers, academic libraries are less likely to welcome them. This article describes the variety of volunteers received at Brown Library of Abilene Christian University and the tasks that they perform. It also presents a discussion of the motivation to accept volunteers, perhaps a faith practice.
Identity Congruence Among Christian Coaches: A Grounded Theory Approach, Sean M. Strehlow
Identity Congruence Among Christian Coaches: A Grounded Theory Approach, Sean M. Strehlow
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
Despite the tight coupling between Christianity and American sport, empirical research has found a level of tension between the Christian identity and the moral culture of athletic competition (Bennet et al., 2005; Nite et al., 2013; Stevenson, 1991). Existing research has focused on the identity of the Christian athlete; however, there is scant empirical work on coaches who also claim a Christian faith and identity. The purpose of this grounded theory study is to better understand identity congruence as a process through which Christian coaches make sense of, and find coherence among, their Christian and professional identities. Qualitative data from …
Will I Even Teach Writing Anymore? An Examination Of First-Year Writing Faculty’S Responsibility To Teach About Or With Chatgpt, Danielle Derise
Will I Even Teach Writing Anymore? An Examination Of First-Year Writing Faculty’S Responsibility To Teach About Or With Chatgpt, Danielle Derise
International Journal on Responsibility
In late November of 2022, faculty continuing to navigate the considerable teaching and research challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic were confronted with another existential problem: the juggernaut known as ChatGPT. This article will examine the academy’s response to this sudden intrusion of Large Language Models (LLMs) into classrooms, workplaces, and daily life, with a focus on interrogating the responsibility of and to instructors of first-year composition. I argue that the breathless calls to reinvent courses, assignments, and syllabus policies to “accommodate” LLMs play into a normative system and may pose additional barriers to success for students, including those …

Q & A: Pastor, Professor, Scholar, And Leader: An Interview, Linda Gray
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
In a Q&A format, pastor, professor, scholar, and leader Eric Newberg talks about his forthcoming book, Paradigms of Global Spirit-Empowered Leaders. It is organized in four parts: (1) defining characteristics of Spirit-empowered leadership, (2) notable Spirit-empowered leaders, (3) global paradigms or models, and (4) benchmarks for leadership development. Spirit-empowered leadership is a type of leadership distinguished by a primary focus on the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit. While leadership is a spiritual gift, it also requires practical skills that must be developed. Spirit-empowered leadership can be categorized five paradigms of charismatic leadership (apostle, prophet, healing evangelist, “pastorpreneur,” and teacher/scholar). …
Integration Of Faith And Learning In Online Programs: A Case Study Of Online Curriculum At A Christian University, Van Hnuai Kim
Integration Of Faith And Learning In Online Programs: A Case Study Of Online Curriculum At A Christian University, Van Hnuai Kim
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
Faith-learning integration (FLI), an oft-stated goal of Christian higher education, is neither easy to define nor practice. Existing literature is not clear on how the fusion of faith and learning is taking place in the classroom, either in person or online. This study examines the two online programs of a Christian university in the Midwest of the United States. The purpose of the study is to describe some of the ways FLI is implemented in the two selected online programs, to gain a better understanding of FLI, and to suggest ways to implement FLI throughout the whole program effectively. The …

Supporting Student Success In The Classroom: Creating A Socio-Emotional Healthy Environment For University Students, Amonda Matthewman-Isgrigg
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
Through the use of Astin’s IEO Model, Socio-Emotional Intelligence (SEI), and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, this paper acknowledges college and university students’ academic and emotional needs and seeks to address the needs of current and future university students to have a supportive classroom environment as they earn their degrees. As the primary focus is on students, the well-being and training of instructors need to be addressed as well because they are the front line of the student support system. By analyzing the pre-existing inputs of the students, being the emotional and mental well-being of the student identified through Maslow’s Hierarchy …

Career Preferences Of Business Students: Traditional Career Path Or Entrepreneurship And Self-Employment?, David W. Whitlock, Ashley J. Hampton, Shanker Menon
Journal of Business & Entrepreneurship
Factors influencing career preferences of business students are explored. This study builds upon an original research project conducted in 1995, which focused on comparing pursuits of entrepreneurship versus more traditional business employment as career paths for business students. In the present study, 40 students enrolled in the senior-level capstone business course and 26 students enrolled in the freshman-level introductory business course in an AACSB accredited business school were administered surveys to determine career preferences and the factors influencing those preferences. The results of the introductory-level course are compared to those of students in the senior-level capstone business course and reported. …

Students Bypass The Syllabus To Utilize Alternate Lms Locations For Assignment Deadlines, Savannah Lopez, Allison Pham, Jeremy L. Hsu, Patricia A. Halpin
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
The syllabus is a required document for all courses to provide students with course information, policies, and assignment deadlines. The goals of this study were to investigate students’ perception of the role of the syllabus, preferred location of assignment deadlines, and preferred style of receiving deadline notifications. Faculty (n = 14) and students (n = 324) from community colleges through professional schools were invited to participate and complete a survey. We used a mixed-method design of survey questions, and the results demonstrated that students defined a syllabus as both a contract and a learning tool and that it …

Marketing In Higher Education: The Effects On The College Choice Experience Of First-Generation Latinx Students, David Cortez
Marketing In Higher Education: The Effects On The College Choice Experience Of First-Generation Latinx Students, David Cortez
Dissertations and Theses
The Latinx population in the United States has drastically increased over the last twenty years. During the same period, the number of first-generation Latinx students enrolling in higher education post-recession has also increased by as much as 1.5 million students. The expansion of the Latinx student population in Oregon has mirrored the national trend by exponentially increasing over the last 10 years. As the population of first-generation Latinx students grows, it becomes essential to explore the issues and barriers Latinx students face in making their college choices. Previous researchers have found that selecting the right institution is important to increase …
Balancing Act: Integrating Broad And Narrow Constructs Of Experiential Learning In Higher Education, Isabelle A. Jenkins, Tyler L. Hough, Charlie Pierce, Ashley Bellet
Balancing Act: Integrating Broad And Narrow Constructs Of Experiential Learning In Higher Education, Isabelle A. Jenkins, Tyler L. Hough, Charlie Pierce, Ashley Bellet
Scholarship and Professional Writing from the J.D. Power Center and Donelan Office
This paper explores the dualistic nature of experiential learning (EL) definitions in higher education, advocating for a balanced integration of broad and narrow constructs. Through case study and collaborative inquiry, diverse disciplinary perspectives—from engineering to performing arts and urban education—are examined to understand EL's application and impact. The paper highlights the importance of accommodating both overarching frameworks for universal applicability and specific definitions for disciplinary depth. It proposes that broad definitions enhance inclusivity and adaptability, while narrow constructs ensure targeted learning experiences and skill development. The findings suggest that EL is a versatile pedagogical tool. It is adaptable to varied …

Challenges Black Males Face At Predominantly White Institutions, Jerrell Lamon Starling
Challenges Black Males Face At Predominantly White Institutions, Jerrell Lamon Starling
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem is that Black males in higher education have declining retention and graduation rates compared to other ethnic groups. Over the past two decades, Black males have declined in enrollment, retention, and graduation rates. Colleges and universities have struggled to attract, keep, and graduate Black male students, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent research has shown that Black male students have experienced the most challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today's educators and practitioners have emphasized the need to do more to keep Black male students and help them complete college. Framed by Critical Race Theory, this study investigated first-generation, …
