Underrepresented Student Experiences Applying To Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Programs: Challenges And Capital, Jenna Maree P. Wong

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

This longitudinal study investigated the challenges and sources of community cultural wealth that underrepresented communication sciences and disorders (CSD) students leverage in navigating each application stage to master’s level speech-language pathology (SLP) programs. Four surveys were distributed over 11 months via Qualtrics to CSD undergraduate seniors enrolled in 12 universities in California. This study included 88 eligible participants who completed at least one round of the longitudinal survey. Applicants recognized the underrepresentation of their identities in the field which served as both a challenge and motivator for becoming a practicing, culturally competent SLP. Obtaining application-related knowledge was the most significant …

How Literacy Coursework May Change The Perspectives Of Preservice Speech-Language Pathologists: A Pilot Study, Robyn E. Becker

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

This pilot study investigated how perspectives of preservice speech-language pathologists (SLPs) may change after completion of a graduate course in literacy in a Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) program. Further, the study sought to reflect upon course design and instructional delivery practices related to the class. Data was collected via online survey completed by 21 volunteer CSD graduate students. The results suggested that students' perspectives may evolve over the course of a semester-long CSD literacy class in some areas related to the components of reading, misconceptions about literacy, and the social justice implications of access to quality reading programs. Using …

Preservice Augmentative And Alternative Communication Coursework Across 311 Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Programs, Brandon S. Eddy, Emily Sorensen, Mariel Pinto

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Speech-language pathologists often report a lack of preparedness to provide augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) services, suggesting the need for improved graduate level training. Recent studies of AAC coursework offerings found 86% to 88% of programs offered AAC coursework, but these studies relied on survey methods with limited numbers of responses. This study examined AAC course offerings at 311 graduate programs using website and course catalog reviews, supplemented by direct contact with departments when dedicated AAC courses could not be found using online resources. Of these, 282 (90.68%) offered a dedicated AAC course, and 16 (5.14%) offered AAC in combination …

Developing Problems With Strengths In Mind: Problem-Based Learning In Introductory Csd Courses, Laura E. Arrington, Stefanie Becerril, Leilani Iem, Charlotte Clark

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Instructors in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) have used problem-based learning (PBL) for a variety of purposes across academic levels. Problem-based learning offers a framework for considering and including student strengths. In this paper, the authors describe the development of a PBL with specific utility to an introductory CSD course, explain how student strengths were considered in the problem development, and provide evidence of student strengths in outcomes of the PBL. This investigation followed 70 undergraduate students registered in introductory CSD courses across two universities as they engaged in a semester long PBL. A thematic analysis of 217 student solutions …

Undergraduate Degree Type And Passing The Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Exam On The First Attempt, Jennifer J. Ford

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

To meet accreditation benchmarks, program directors of dietetic education programs monitor registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) exam pass rates. The RDN exam first-time pass rate for a midwestern university’s dietetic coordinated graduate program (CGP) had been 72.73% in 2022, 47.62% in 2021, 60.87% in 2020, and 69.7% in 2019, all of which fell below the required minimum of 80% for accredited dietetic education programs. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between undergraduate degree type and passing the RDN exam on the first attempt. Constructivism was the theoretical framework that informed this study. This study employed a quantitative …

Faculty Authored Articles

Background:

The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate the effects of curricular changes made to foster graduate students' understanding of how they can be catalysts of change. For more than a decade, the concept of the citizen nurse has been woven into coursework in nursing education, thus indicating an evaluation process was needed.

Method:

Ten oral history interviews were completed with current students or alumni. Data were analyzed for codes, allowing the final themes to emerge.

Results:

Two main themes emerged. Students reported (1) having a new understanding of what it means to be a nurse and (2) …

The Role Of Kenneth Kaunda’S Humanism In Fostering Higher Education For Social Responsibility In Post-Colonial Zambia (1964-1991), Edward Mboyonga Sep 2024

The Role Of Kenneth Kaunda’S Humanism In Fostering Higher Education For Social Responsibility In Post-Colonial Zambia (1964-1991), Edward Mboyonga

Zambia Social Science Journal

Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia’s first president from 1964 to 1991, advanced a Pan-African social-political ideology of humanism as a moral code to guide all human activities in the nation’s political, economic, and social spheres. Within education, humanism envisaged producing socially responsible and public good-oriented graduates equipped with humane values and capable of driving the national development agenda. This paper critically examines the nexus between Kaunda’s humanism and education by focussing on its role in fostering higher education for social responsibility in post-colonial Zambia. In addressing this, it focusses on the University of Zambia as a case study by drawing on secondary …

Along For The Journey: Graduate Student Perceptions Of Research, Alissa A. Droog, Kari D. Weaver, Frances Brady Sep 2024

Along For The Journey: Graduate Student Perceptions Of Research, Alissa A. Droog, Kari D. Weaver, Frances Brady

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Graduate students’ identities and personal lives are heavily tied to their experiences of research, and many struggle to find, understand, and use information for research purposes. Using a drawing exercise rooted in visual research methods combined with semi-structured interviews, a research team in the United States and Canada explored graduate student perceptions of research with nineteen participants. Thematic analysis identified six themes: research is abstract; research is an odyssey; social support makes or breaks the student experience; research is an emotional continuum; interplay between identity/values; information is problematic. The study has implications for how librarians support graduate student research.
