Enacting Project-Based Learning For Higher Education: An Autoethnographic Study Of Online Learning During The Pandemic, Somariah Fitriani Jan 2025

Enacting Project-Based Learning For Higher Education: An Autoethnographic Study Of Online Learning During The Pandemic, Somariah Fitriani

The Qualitative Report

This study is a reflection on my personal experiences with the higher education online teaching and learning process. It is an autoethnography study in which data were garnered from virtual participant observations, journals, an open-ended questionnaire and interviews about student projects during the COVID-19 pandemic. I leveraged project-based learning as pedagogical device. Thus, the students worked collaboratively on an online training project (webinar) as part of a course on education and training management. I served as both a teacher and a participant in the online training performed by the students. Through virtual participant observation, this project allowed me to learn …

The Laughing Buddha: The Education Of Compassionate Leaders Through Improvisational Play, Belinda Chiu Jan 2025

The Laughing Buddha: The Education Of Compassionate Leaders Through Improvisational Play, Belinda Chiu

Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education

With an urgency to build a generative future, educational systems do not have a choice but to pay attention to how and what we train our future leaders. Yet there is still a gap as leadership studies are often relegated as a “soft” skill, rather than integrated as technical knowledge critical to the holistic effectiveness of a tertiary education. As a result, there is often a disconnect between students immersed in the idealistic bubble of the academy and graduates navigating life outside. Inquiry- and reflective-based methods of contemplative practices may be critical for leaders to avoid short-term, short-sighted decisions that …

Expanding Our Horizons While Maintaining Our Balance, Daniel K. Blewett Jan 2025

Expanding Our Horizons While Maintaining Our Balance, Daniel K. Blewett

Library Scholarship

The constant winds of change have blown more collection development demands to the doorsteps of community college libraries, resulting in a stress on resources. Libraries are being asked to do more with the same or fewer resources. Many community college libraries are now supporting more than just the traditional career and technical educa- tion, or general education courses. Dual enrollment, new programs, and partnering with four-year institutions for new articulation agreements, are examples of the changing needs community colleges may experience. As institutional needs continue to evolve it will be necessary for community college libraries to expand their collection development …

Importance Of Library Metrics And Effective Methods Of Communication With Provosts, Katy Zane Jan 2025

Importance Of Library Metrics And Effective Methods Of Communication With Provosts, Katy Zane

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Provosts and librarians share a common goal of needing to measure library activity in such a way that appropriately conveys how it contributes to the institution’s campus initiatives and strategic planning. The goal of this research was to determine how best to analyze these activities through agreed upon metrics and preferred communication styles. By combining the two aspects of analytical metrics and communication methods, this research would provide a common ground that both provosts and librarians could build upon for the future growth and development of the library.

“That’S Where I Learned To Be A Good Mommy” Understanding How Adults Learn In A Home Visitation, Community-Based Partnership, Kelli R. Kerbawy

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In higher education, a growing interest exists in fostering partnerships between institutions and community-based programs to enhance the lives of individuals. These initiatives have encompassed a variety of programs, including life skills development and civic engagement opportunities facilitated by academic experts. Despite the plethora of educational prospects surrounding health, community engagement, and civic improvement, assessing the efficacy of adult learning in community settings remains challenging. Previous research has indicated inadequacies of conventional prenatal education programs in addressing the complex needs of expecting mothers.

This study centered on the adult learning experiences in the Maternal Infant Health Outreach Worker (MIHOW) program, …

Opening The Door, But Not Entering: Adult College Students Who Apply, But Do Not Enroll, Juliette Punchello Jan 2025

Opening The Door, But Not Entering: Adult College Students Who Apply, But Do Not Enroll, Juliette Punchello

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study used a mixed method research design and employed an explanatory sequential design, which collected, analyzed, and combined both quantitative and qualitative methods to explore why adult, non-traditional students would apply to a college, but not enroll. This disconnect affects not only the applicant, but also the institution, as multiple resources for both parties will be utilized and not recovered. The quantitative component of the study included data from an established segment of applicants who did not enroll at Thomas Edison State University (TESU). The qualitative component utilized a phenomenological approach and included the data gathered through interviews with …

Student Affairs Professionals' Perspectives As First-Generation College Students, Tiffany Lynn Hartman Jan 2025

Student Affairs Professionals' Perspectives As First-Generation College Students, Tiffany Lynn Hartman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The qualitative study aimed to investigate the perceptions of student affairs professionals (SAPs) who identify as first-generation college students (FGCSs). SAPs are essential in supporting institutional missions, yet the field faces high attrition rates, particularly among earlycareer professionals. By examining these SAPs' perceptions regarding their professional experiences, along with the support received and influences on their career paths, we may better understand the barriers to workplace inclusion and career readiness. Although much research explores the factors driving attrition among SAPs, limited attention is paid to the SAPs whose identities as FGCS impact their professional experiences and influence their decisions to …

Another Kind Of First Year Experience: A Narrative Inquiry Of The Experiences Of International Students' Transition In The First Year, Arezou K. Soto Jan 2025

Another Kind Of First Year Experience: A Narrative Inquiry Of The Experiences Of International Students' Transition In The First Year, Arezou K. Soto

Dissertations of Practice

International students are integral to campus communities. Understanding the experiences that international students have as they adjust in their first year can benefit institutions in providing proper support. This study explored international graduate students’ narratives as they transition in their new environment and adjust to life at a mid-size, public institution in the Midwest in their first year. It also looked at the strategies that international graduate students utilize in their transition in their first year as well as how they perceive the support provided to them by the institution. Schlossberg’s Transition Theory guided this narrative inquiry study. Four themes …

A Case Study Of Italian Teachers’ Culturally Responsive Pedagogy When Teaching U.S. Undergraduate Students Studying Abroad In Rome, Italy, Massimiliano Tomassini Jan 2025

A Case Study Of Italian Teachers’ Culturally Responsive Pedagogy When Teaching U.S. Undergraduate Students Studying Abroad In Rome, Italy, Massimiliano Tomassini

Theses and Dissertations

For over two decades Italy has been the second destination, first non-Anglo-Saxon, for U.S. undergraduate students studying abroad, with 36,945 students in academic year 2017/2018 corresponding to a 10.8% share and a 4.5% increase from 2016/2017 (IIE, 2019). With over 150 North American college and university programs present in the country (AACUPI, 2019), a specifically designed law (Art. 2 of Law N. 4 of 14 January 1999) created to support study abroad in Italy, and a 40-year-old nonprofit association (AACUPI) focused on promoting and supporting American universities and colleges with programs in Italy, Italy is, and will be for some …
