Everyday Storytelling: The Function, Meaning, And Impact Of College Student's Storytelling And Storylistening, Sophie K. Richards
Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The current study investigated the stories that 102 college students heard and told through the course of a 1-day diary study with surveys administered at four timepoints. Investigated through the perspective of the small story framework (Bamberg & Georgakopoulou, 2008), everyday talk (Goldsmith & Baxter, 1996) and Communicated Narrative Sense-Making (CNSM) theory (Koenig Kellas, 2022), participants reported about the stories that they heard and told throughout their day, as well as completed self-report measures of well-being. The study aimed to understand the characteristics of everyday stories, the functions they serve, the meanings they hold, and their impact on well-being. Participants …
Giving Voice To Student Grief: Using Community-Based Participatory Research To Develop And Pilot A Translational Storytelling Intervention For Bereaved College Students, Cassidy Rae Taladay-Carter
Giving Voice To Student Grief: Using Community-Based Participatory Research To Develop And Pilot A Translational Storytelling Intervention For Bereaved College Students, Cassidy Rae Taladay-Carter
Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this dissertation was to employ community-based participatory research (CBPR, Wallerstein et al., 2018) methods to attend to a pressing issue in the community. In partnership with one local grief center, we identified the need for enhanced grief support for current emerging adult undergraduate students in our area. Nearly 50% of U.S. emerging adults enrolled in four-year residential universities experience the death of an important figure (Cox et al., 2015; Cupit et al., 2021), at a time when they are developing important facets of their narrative identity. Without the coherence and meaning structures provided by narrative identity, students …
The Impact Of Provider Communication On Treatment Adherence In Patients With Hypertension And Diabetes, Trey Carlson
The Impact Of Provider Communication On Treatment Adherence In Patients With Hypertension And Diabetes, Trey Carlson
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Current research cites effective provider communication as an important factor in improving treatment adherence and the health outcomes of patients. This study examines the effect of provider communication on treatment adherence in patients with chronic illnesses with a specific focus on hypertension and diabetes. Provider communication was measured using patient satisfaction surveys and treatment compliance was measured as the percentage of hypertensive and diabetic patients with a blood pressure below 140/90 mmHg and hemoglobin A1C levels below 9%. A one-way MANOVA revealed that provider communication had no significant impact on the combined treatment compliance variables for hypertension and diabetes (Wilk’s …
Successes And Challenges Of College Readiness Curriculum For First-Generation Students, Erin Simmons
Successes And Challenges Of College Readiness Curriculum For First-Generation Students, Erin Simmons
Educational Studies Student Papers and Posters
A raising issue in education is the prevalence of first-generation college students and their ability to succeed in institutional spaces. First-generation college students are defined as the first individual in their immediate family to go to college and complete a BA degree. First-generation students differ from continuing generation students in that continuing generation students have a parent that has attended a 4-year institution and completed a BA degree. The difference in rather or not a student is the first to graduate from college is a significant predictor of their success and can present many additional barriers. These barriers include access …
Exploring The Matriculation And Resource Utilization Of African American Students With Hidden Disabilities In The Health Sciences, Kimberly Houston
Exploring The Matriculation And Resource Utilization Of African American Students With Hidden Disabilities In The Health Sciences, Kimberly Houston
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Introduction. Learning disabilities result from genetic and neurobiological factors that alter brain function, such that cognitive processes related to learning are affected. Hidden disabilities can be defined as a non-apparent chronic condition that interferes with a person’s activities of daily living. While learning disabilities may be hidden, there are non-learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, autism, depression, fibromyalgia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. While all races/ethnic groups have persons within their population who are disabled, African Americans are at a double disadvantage due to race and disability status. Therefore, the intersectionality of race and disability status among African American students in …

Institutionalizing Normality: Disability, Productivity, And Higher Education, Ashley Dirzis
Institutionalizing Normality: Disability, Productivity, And Higher Education, Ashley Dirzis
Student Theses
This thesis examines how capitalism and neuronormative domination shape the structures and values of academic institutions, affecting faculty, students, and research subjects alike. By privileging productivity, conformity, and efficiency in the pursuit of income, universities often marginalize those who diverge from normative standards of thinking, behavior, and embodiment, particularly disabled individuals. Drawing on Marta Russell’s Disability and Capitalism and the shaping of disability by capitalist systems, Robert Chapman’s notion of the "Empire of Normality" and Jay Dolmage’s concept of the retrofit from Academic Ableism, this paper analyzes how academia reinforces ableist norms. It explores the realities and barriers that …

Historic Bedrocks Of Volunteer Recruitment: Collaboration Between The Peace Corps And Higher Education Partners, Melanie Elizabeth Graham
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
In this study I investigate the collaboration between the United States Peace Corps and their higher education partnership institutions, focusing on Peace Corps Prep Programs (PCPP) which aim to recruit, prepare, and retain diverse Peace Corps Volunteers. The inquiry examines the purpose, structure, and process of these collaborations to uncover successes and shortcomings, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms that contribute to effectiveness or hinder progress. A mixed-method, multiple case study methodology, integrating surveys and individual interviews that parallel The Wilder Collaboration Factors Inventory, facilitates an in-depth examination of the intricate dynamics and multifaceted experiences within the collaborative partnerships. Pillars Of Purpose: Postsecondary Career And Technical Education Faculty Viewpoints On Retention, Garry Brandon Hensley
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
The retention of postsecondary Career and Technical Education (CTE) faculty in community colleges is critical for maintaining a skilled workforce to meet evolving labor market demands. This study employs Q methodology to explore the subjective viewpoints of community college CTE faculty regarding factors influencing their job satisfaction and retention. Grounded in Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory of Motivation and Job Embeddedness Theory, the research integrates the concept of Employee Experience Management (EEM) to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding faculty retention. Data collected from Q sorts and follow-up focus group interviews reveal six distinct factors representing diverse faculty perspectives on job satisfaction, …
Preparing Preservice Teachers For Rural Teaching Through Professional Learning During Teaching Practice, Blandina Daniel Mazzuki
Preparing Preservice Teachers For Rural Teaching Through Professional Learning During Teaching Practice, Blandina Daniel Mazzuki
The Rural Educator
Resource deficit in rural schools has been reported to affect recruitment and retention of teachers. However, many researchers focus on external factors that can attract teachers to teach in rural schools. This study explores teacher educators’ and preservice teachers’ perspectives on strategies that may equip preservice teachers with professional learning during their teaching practice to attract them to teaching and staying in rural schools. The study was conducted at the University of Dar es Salaam (Dar es Salaam University College of Education-DUCE). Data were collected through face-to-face interviews and focus group discussions conducted with 5 teacher educators and 33 preservice …

Intimate Partner Violence Among College Students: The Influence Of Gender, Sexual Orientation, Race/Ethnicity On Bystander Intention, Brooke M. Puharic
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Intimate partner violence (IPV) among college students is an issue across gender, sexual orientation, and race/ethnicity. The present study highlights the sociodemographic characteristics that influence physical IPV involvement among college students by reporting past year prevalence and frequency rates of physical IPV involvement by gender, sexual orientation, and race/ethnicity. Additionally, the current study builds on research about bystander intention to intervene by exploring the influence of these sociodemographic characteristics on participants intentions to intervene, as well as their preferred type of intervention.
Participants were 525 university students recruited from the psychology research pool. They were presented with eight hypothetical vignettes …
Black Students With Disabilities In The Virginia Community College System, David Jerome Sultzer
Black Students With Disabilities In The Virginia Community College System, David Jerome Sultzer
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
The advancement of policies and laws to support students with disabilities has increased the roles of students with disabilities in post-secondary institutions. There remains a significant disparity between the population of abled and disabled students and even a more significant disparity between Black and other students with disabilities on post-secondary campuses in the United States. Research has uncovered a fair amount of qualitative literature that speaks to the disparity between Black and other students with disabilities on post-secondary campuses with most of the qualitative literature from the perspective of the Black student with disabilities.
This study examined the perceptions of …
Navigating Recovery: Community College Student Journeys Through Collegiate Recovery Programs, Eric Scott Klein
Navigating Recovery: Community College Student Journeys Through Collegiate Recovery Programs, Eric Scott Klein
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
There is an inherent regional need to support students in recovery, and often their demographics and lived experiences coincide with the student body of a community college. This is particularly salient to the segments of this population which concurrently suffer maltreatment due to other intersectional biases implicit in many health care and education-based systems inside the United States (Cole, 2009; Mance et al., 2010; Rosenthal, 2016). Community colleges are not doing enough to equitably support students in recovery from substance use disorder (SUD) and help buoy their recovery capital (Appiah, 2021; Ashford, Curtis, et al., 2018; Association of Recovery in …
Contemporary Student Activism In A Digital Age, Jennifer Kristen Cohen
Contemporary Student Activism In A Digital Age, Jennifer Kristen Cohen
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Higher education has as part of its purpose to support students becoming active citizens (Barnhardt, 2015). One way that this is practiced is through student activism. With many opportunities for development, student activism has manifested differently across the ages going through periods of high activity and others of apparent latency (Levine, 1980). Arthur Levine (1980) shared a framework for student activism motivation where there were oscillating periods of community and individual ascendency. However, this model has not been considered with the attributes of contemporary college students and with the advance of new media being accessible to the masses.

This qualitative phenomenological study collected data through in-depth semi-structured interviews with Black American female juniors and seniors studying at four different four-year institutions, all pursuing degrees in STEM-related fields. Demographic surveys and memo writing were incorporated to enhance the data analysis. To explore the lived experiences of Black American females in STEM education and identify factors that contributed …
The Ebony Edge: A Qualitative Exploration Of Math Success Among Black College Women, April Ruiz
The Ebony Edge: A Qualitative Exploration Of Math Success Among Black College Women, April Ruiz
Dissertations
Historically, women have been underrepresented as leaders in STEM. However, according to the National Science Foundation (2022), women accounted for a little more than half of the college-educated workforce and underrepresented minority women increased in broad science and engineering occupational categories. This promising upturn underscores the importance—if progress is to continue—of better understanding why some African American women succeed in and persist with their study of college mathematics.
This study aimed to explore the experiences of Black college women attending a predominantly White institution in the Midwest, to better understand what reasons Black college women ascribe to their success in …

Navigating Challenges And Seizing Opportunities: The Transformative Impact Of Ai On Business Education And Teaching Strategies, Denada Ibrushi
Presentations - 2025
This article explores the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on business education and teaching strategies, focusing on the instructor’s evolving role as a coach, the use of AI as a student assistant, and the development of AI-related skills. While AI cannot fully replace human instructors—lacking the capacity for existential reflection, value transmission, and societal context—it has significant potential to enhance efficiency, enabling instructors to prioritize student creativity and critical thinking. The study highlights various AI applications, such as ClassPoint AI for interactive quizzes, GradeScope for automated grading, and PowerPoint Speaker Coach for presentation skills, as well as tools like …
