The “Presentation Log Report”: A Project Workflow That Supports Notes, Annotation, And Editing, From Project Inception To Final Presentation, Julian Kilker Apr 2025

The “Presentation Log Report”: A Project Workflow That Supports Notes, Annotation, And Editing, From Project Inception To Final Presentation, Julian Kilker

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

My “presentation log report” practice repurposes presentation software to serve the function of the research report with the flexibility to transform a logbook into a final report. This practice is (1) accessible to students, (2) supports workforce skills, (3) models workflow stages, and (4) is resistant to Gen AI abuse. Using my Google Slides project template, students thoroughly log details of each project stage and then “collapse” this log into a final report. Presentation slides are ideal for structuring report sections and visual documentation of resources and data. Slides can be shared, supporting collaboration and peer review, and students can …

Using A Fourth-Generation Behavioral Theory To Develop Competencies In Doctoral Public Health Students About The Application Of Theory-Based Intervention Planning, Manoj Sharma Apr 2025

Using A Fourth-Generation Behavioral Theory To Develop Competencies In Doctoral Public Health Students About The Application Of Theory-Based Intervention Planning, Manoj Sharma

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Asynchronous teaching is gaining popularity all over the world and at UNLV. In asynchronous teaching, both pedagogical robustness and the building of content expertise, especially for doctoral scholars, are mandatory. Since 2021, I have taught Advanced Applications of Social and Behavioral Theories (HED 762-1001) to public health students aiming to develop concentration-specific competencies set by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). The specific teaching techniques employed by me entail (a) the use of the fourth-generation multi-theory model (MTM) of health behavior change to motivate students not only to acquire knowledge and skills but also lead them toward behavioral …

One-Page Rpgs: An Engaging Alternative To Group Ppts, Bill Doyle

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Looking to increase student engagement and interest, I added the one-page RPG as an option my HON 110 students have for their group project. Ideally, student-designed games help them think more carefully about class readings and related contexts and connect meaningfully to that material in ways that make the Honors College’s second-year seminar a more memorable, transformative experience. These games also help students better understand a potentially unfamiliar genre. Finally, because materials are shared outside of class, there is a reduced stress level related to conventional, in-front-of-the-class, end-of-semester group presentations.

No More Deer In The Headlights: Interview Practice With Ai, Helen R. Neill Apr 2025

No More Deer In The Headlights: Interview Practice With Ai, Helen R. Neill

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Ever had a student (or been the student) who froze like a deer in headlights during an interview? Been there. Whether it’s for a job, graduate school, or a conversation with a potential mentor, high-stakes interviews can spark panic. This teaching practice introduces AI-powered mock interviews to give students—both traditional and adult learners—a low-pressure space to prepare. Using AI, students rehearse:

  • Informational interviews
  • Job interviews
  • Graduate school and assistantship interviews

Why it works: Students receive meaningful, low-stakes practice and instant feedback on tone, clarity, and content. They can revise, retry, and gain confidence with each round. This approach also supports …

Co-Creating Learning Journeys, Yvonne Houy Apr 2025

Co-Creating Learning Journeys, Yvonne Houy

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Viewing education as a journey of exploration and discovery, I invite students to co-create our path. As a “guide on the side,” I help students build a foundation while encouraging autonomy through co-creation—where students contribute to course design, content, assessment, and learning activities. This collaborative approach fosters deeper engagement, critical thinking, and meaningful learning. Research shows co-creation improves academic performance, skill development, and student-staff relationships. Instructors can support this by framing learning as exploration, modeling curiosity, building inclusive learning communities, and offering flexible, student-driven curricular choices that include research, topic proposals, and the creation of assessments based on co-developed content.

Thesis Equations: A Standard Formula To Help Craft A Thesis Statement, Meanna Williams Apr 2025

Thesis Equations: A Standard Formula To Help Craft A Thesis Statement, Meanna Williams

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Thesis Equations is an outlining method that can be used for writing argumentative papers. It proposes a formulaic structure that acts as a base for students to craft a simple thesis. Students need to know how to make a claim. With the emergence of AI use, and the decreasing knowledge of foundational practices, utilizing proper brainstorming and outlining skills persists to be a difficult task for student writers.

Preoperational Period, Huda Abu-Suwa, Lisa K. Lashley, Charles J. Golden Apr 2025

Preoperational Period, Huda Abu-Suwa, Lisa K. Lashley, Charles J. Golden

Essays in Developmental Psychology

The preoperational period is part of Jean Piaget’s four stages of cognitive development (Lally & Valentine-French, 2019). Piaget was a cognitive psychology, who in 1936 created a model to explain how children understand the world and develop cognitively. While other contemporary theorists believed that intelligence was a fixed trait, Piaget believed that cognitive development was a process that occurred in distinct stages, and that maturation brings about changes and growth in development, rather than training (Lally & Valentine-French, 2019). Piaget posited that each stage occurred at a specific time and in a specific sequential order, such every child goes through …

From Student-Athlete To Working Professional: Career Readiness For College Athletes, Elizabeth M. Gibbs

Masters Projects

College student-athletes face unique challenges in preparing for life and work after graduation. With a significant amount of time dedicated to their athletic career, many student-athletes have limited opportunities to explore potential careers, participate in internships, or get involved in activities or work on or off campus. The number of student-athletes has continued to increase, and it is important for student-athletes to utilize career resources available to them. Research has shown that student-athletes struggle with career readiness and lack of confidence in transitioning out of their athletic career. It is important to adequately prepare them for the workforce, as very …

Supporting Students Who Support Students: Creating Systems Of Care For Resident Assistants (Ras), Landyn M. Teachout

Masters Projects

Resident Assistants (RAs) at institutions of higher education nationwide are responsible for creating community-building opportunities, engaging meaningfully with students, reporting and documenting concerns, generally ensuring the safety of on-campus students, and much more. RAs are expected to manage the mental, physical, and emotional needs of the students they supervise while simultaneously fulfilling other obligations they may face as students, friends, classmates, members of family units, and individuals in society. This project explores the mental and emotional toll the RA position plays on students who participate in the role. Particularly, this project investigates the needs of modern college students, the phenomena …

A Comparison Of The Relationship Between Campus Writing Centers And Developmental Writing Programs At Two- And Four-Year Institutions, Kiley Truex Apr 2025

A Comparison Of The Relationship Between Campus Writing Centers And Developmental Writing Programs At Two- And Four-Year Institutions, Kiley Truex

English Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Throughout the history of American composition instruction in higher education, the question of how best to support students who struggle with or come into college unprepared for academic writing has been a debated one. Two of the most commonplace models for additional student writing support are basic writing courses and writing centers, and institutions often have both. Furthermore, there is also a distinction between writing education at the four-year college level and writing education at the two-year college level, and this distinction comes into particularly sharp focus when it comes to examining both basic writing pedagogies and well as the …

Empowering Undecided Students: Fostering Self-Authorship Through Academic Advising Practices, Erin E. Westberg Apr 2025

Empowering Undecided Students: Fostering Self-Authorship Through Academic Advising Practices, Erin E. Westberg

Masters Projects

More students are entering college undecided about their major, yet many academic advisors are not equipped with the proper tools to holistically support this population. Undecided students often experience self-doubt, external pressures, and difficulty identifying a major that aligns with their personal interests and goals. Without holistic support, this may delay their time to graduation or cause them to choose a path that doesn’t feel right for them. The purpose of this project is to provide academic advisors with a framework to better support undecided students through the use of self-authorship. This approach encourages students to reflect on their values, …

Reimagining Faculty Retention And Governance In Regional Public Universities, Cabdulcasiis Maxamed Ciise Apr 2025

Reimagining Faculty Retention And Governance In Regional Public Universities, Cabdulcasiis Maxamed Ciise

Masters Projects

This project addresses the faculty retention crisis in regional public universities (RPUs) by examining how neoliberal governance, characterized by performance metrics, market-driven funding, and corporate leadership, has restructured academic work and eroded shared governance. The purpose was to explore faculty burnout, disengagement, and leadership gaps, and to develop resources that support more ethical and collaborative institutional cultures. Using Labor Process Theory, Critical Social Theory, and Organizational Citizenship Behavior as guiding frameworks, this literature-based project analyzed the structural and ideological conditions driving faculty attrition and institutional instability. Research included an extensive review of peer-reviewed literature on neoliberalism in higher education, faculty …

Towards A Pedagogy Of Unruly Bodyminds, Muhammad Ali Imran, Jane L. Saffitz Apr 2025

Towards A Pedagogy Of Unruly Bodyminds, Muhammad Ali Imran, Jane L. Saffitz

Feminist Pedagogy

This commentary underscores critical practices from Jane’s “Unruly Bodies” seminar that Ali, a student in the course and Jane’s advisee, has since mobilized towards anti-colonial organizing. Purposely experimental, the seminar attempted to rethink embodiment as intercorporeal and thus as capable of generating new ways to think about agency and solidarity in contexts marred by forms of militarization, medical violence, and histories of domination. Thinking through our bodyminds as both terrains of contestation and weapons in broader struggles for liberation required us to cultivate a classroom space of radical openness and vulnerability. We describe these efforts, as well as our broader …

Conversations Before The Conversation: Readying Dissidence Through Norm-Setting, Ashley N. Watson Apr 2025

Conversations Before The Conversation: Readying Dissidence Through Norm-Setting, Ashley N. Watson

Feminist Pedagogy

How can educators speak truth to power in ways that decenter whiteness while supporting student learning across different levels of awareness? What does the right balance of challenge and support look like in today’s unpredictable college environment? These questions are drawn from my experience as a Black predoctoral fellow teaching “Intercultural Dialogue” at a traditionally white public liberal arts university in rural Minnesota. This paper—both a reflection and recommendations for practice—outlines my approach to co-constructing and scaffolding a conducive learning environment rooted in emancipatory pedagogy.

Digital Literacy For Participating In Presidential Election: A Study On Indonesian Students, Marwiyah Marwiyah, Labibah Zain, Aliva D. Kamila, Thoriq T. Prabowo

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Digital literacy is needed during the presidential election. This study aims to determine the level of digital literacy of Indonesian students concerning what they do with social media information in facing the 2024 presidential election. We conducted a survey in which questionnaires were used as a research instrument to measure the four digital competencies: technical skill, information usage, communication, and creation. The questionnaires are sent to four Indonesian public universities. One hundred ninety-seven students from four State Islamic Universities (Universitas Islam Negeri) participated in this study. We used the mean and percentage score for the data analysis. The research result …

There's A Method To This Physics Madness, Hanna J. Ross

Physics and Astronomy Presentations

Physics tends to be seen by the general public as scary and unattainable, especially for students who are non-STEM majors. However, at Ursinus College (as well as many other institutions) the professors employ the use of specific problem-solving strategy instruction to mitigate these fears and further general problem solving skills. This study reviews previous experiments evaluating the merit of this strategy and analyzes its results as it relates to Physics on Screen, a physics class at Ursinus geared specifically towards non-majors.

Central Habits Of Highly Effective Tutors: Hospitable Practice, Rhetorical Listening, And Emotional Validation In The Writing Center, Edward A. English

The Writing Center Journal

This article explores hospitality as a theoretical framework for valuing emotional engagement and rhetorical listening in writing center consultations, challenging traditional views that prioritize rationality and detachment. Anchored in a university writing center, the study investigates how writing tutors engage with writers, adopting hospitality as a core principle. Semi-structured postconsultation interviews and a focus group allowed tutors to reflect collaboratively on their application of the hospitality framework. Thematic analysis with in vivo coding ensured participants’ voices remained central to the findings. By examining the lived experiences of tutors, the study highlights the dynamic relationship between emotional and rational responses in …
