Ouachita Tiger Steel Flag Flown In Trinidad And Tobago, Kaitlyn Stoddard, Ouachita News Bureau

Press Releases

Tiger Steel, Ouachita Baptist University’s advanced steel drum ensemble, was chosen to have its emblem flag flown in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), in the fall as part of the country’s recognition of Steelpan Month. Ouachita was one of the first two universities chosen for inclusion in the third annual Barry Mannette Steelpan Flying High Global Flag Exhibition, part of the Steelpan One World Initiative.

“It’s wonderful to have our steel band recognized and honored this way in the country where steel drums originated! It’s kind of similar to our flags in the plaza on campus,” said Dr. Ryan Lewis, …

Los Nava: Testimonios Of Three First-Generation Siblings And Their College Going Decisions, Maria Del S. Nava, Lucero Del-Rayo Nava, Arturo Nava

The Vermont Connection

Abstract

La familia Nava originates with two hard working immigrant parents that came to the United States seeking educational opportunities for their children. This is the testimony of the three eldest siblings, Arturo, Maria, and Lucero, and their college search and application process. We follow them and the challenges they face as first-generation college students from low-income backgrounds. Using Yosso’s theory of Community Cultural Wealth and Iloh’s Model of College-Going Decisions and Trajectories as the frameworks, one can investigate the ways in which first-generation college students navigate this process and expose real barriers on their paths towards higher education.

Reclaiming Our Time: We Do It For The Culture, Angela E. Fillingim, Nini Hayes Apr 2023

Reclaiming Our Time: We Do It For The Culture, Angela E. Fillingim, Nini Hayes

The Vermont Connection

Using narrative methodology with a lens of critical race feminism, in self-reflexive ways we draw on our experiences as a Latina and Black-Pinay tenure-track faculty who have dealt with spirit murdering and labored in community to resist. We used feminist theories to understand the roots of our friendship and commitment to resistance. Our persistent encounters with spirit murdering were tied to, what we call, “time-theft.” Time-theft describes an embodied consequence of spirit murdering which deeply affects our emotional, mental, and physical well-being. We offer insights into how we resisted “time-theft conquistadors” and other means the institution tried to steal from …

Going To A Psychiatric Hospital Saved My Life And My Student Affairs Career, Jo Wilson Apr 2023

Going To A Psychiatric Hospital Saved My Life And My Student Affairs Career, Jo Wilson

The Vermont Connection

The ongoing mental health crisis for college students has been a notable topic in recent years and while a necessary conversation, this often overlooks an underlying mental health crisis for higher education staff and the connection between both crises. As a former mentally ill graduate student and now (still) mentally ill student affairs practitioner, the connection is clear and a conversation now is critical. Using my personal narrative as a current practitioner, self authorship, and disability theory intersections, I am using this piece as a counternarrative and interruption to traditional student and staff development. Lastly, I seek to encourage a …

Where To Start? Asset-Based Approaches For Practitioners In Higher Education., Robert Drago, Michelle Setnikar Apr 2023

Where To Start? Asset-Based Approaches For Practitioners In Higher Education., Robert Drago, Michelle Setnikar

The Vermont Connection

Deficit thinking centers an individual's background or identities as the reason a student struggles or faces challenges in college. Higher education practitioners have a drive to shift policy, programs, and perspectives away from the harmful influence of deficit thinking. Asset-based approaches, such as psychologically attuned communication and growth mindset messaging, instead focus on student experiences and backgrounds as an opportunity rather than a burden. The question before practitioners is: where to start? We present options to consider.

White Student Affairs Practitioner's Role In Actualizing An Antiracist Environment, Patrick Lovelace Apr 2023

White Student Affairs Practitioner's Role In Actualizing An Antiracist Environment, Patrick Lovelace

The Vermont Connection

This article is meant to serve as a resource for white student affairs practitioners to continue to consider their role in engaging in anti-racism work by learning about both theoretical and practical tools. Through the lens of Critical Race Theory, this piece examines the way racism is used as a tool by those with power to marginalize and harm Black individuals and communities people specifically through a higher education and student affairs context. Using existing research and practice that requires the self-examination of whiteness by white people, this piece will hopefully engage practitioners in considering ways to leverage whiteness as …

The Importance Of Validation In Latine Student Success, Maria Del S. Nava Apr 2023

The Importance Of Validation In Latine Student Success, Maria Del S. Nava

The Vermont Connection

Latine students are the fastest growing ethnic group currently in higher education and yet they experience lower undergraduate completion rates than their white peers. In this paper I explore Validation theory, in combination with community cultural wealth and the Bicultural Orientation Model and Influences on Latino Identity, and the ways in which they can be used to support Latine students. Validation is defined as a positive external affirmation to students that positively impacts their own belief to succeed. With the Latine undergraduate student population growing, validation theory can be an important tool to address the issues relevant to students from …

Visual Reflection: New Tools For Pedagogy And Practice, Tempestt R. Adams Apr 2023

Visual Reflection: New Tools For Pedagogy And Practice, Tempestt R. Adams

The Vermont Connection

In this essay I present a visual journal to reflect on my experiences as a new ungrader. In line with the theme of this journal, my visual essay provides reminders and possibilities for us to consider to help spark more joy in our work. The guiding question of the essay is how can new practices such as ungrading and visual journaling enhance our joy and support students? The essay begins with a brief overview of three elements that anchor the essay: ungrading, arts-based methods, and visual journaling. Then, the visual journaling process, product, and an analysis is presented. The essay …

Ya'll Don't Hate White Supremacy Enough For Me: How Performative Dei Prevents Anti-Racism And Accountability In Higher Education, Dr Frederick V. Engram Jr, Katie Mayer Apr 2023

Ya'll Don't Hate White Supremacy Enough For Me: How Performative Dei Prevents Anti-Racism And Accountability In Higher Education, Dr Frederick V. Engram Jr, Katie Mayer

The Vermont Connection

Many institutions of higher learning and more specifically predominately white institutions (PWIs) have created divisions, teams, and administrative roles aimed at transforming problematic and racism-centered institutions. However, the teams and leaders almost never have true autonomy or institutional support in creating an environment not centered in whiteness or white feelings but one centered in disruption of the status quo and truly anti-racist. As scholars and practitioners, we find ourselves being requested to tailor our talks or teaching in a way that is digestible for white people. Meanwhile, students of color are being berated at athletic events, in their classes, and …

Show And Tell: The Roots Of Our Farm Shall Be Nourished, Kirsty Nicole Bocado Apr 2023

Show And Tell: The Roots Of Our Farm Shall Be Nourished, Kirsty Nicole Bocado

The Vermont Connection

The educational system perpetuates capitalism and material wealth, valuing White and Western ideologies, thus alienating certain identities and narratives. As a first-generation and low-income child of APIDA immigrants, I strive to bring awareness to cultural wealth due to the erasure of marginalized identities and narratives. Rather than just focusing on the struggles of holding multiple marginalized identities, I showcase the joys of practices and traditions in my culture and highlight the hope my communities give me as a descendant of militants and revolutionaries. In this article, I raise awareness of lived experiences that are often left out of the educational …

Analysis Of Attitudinal Student Learning Benefits From A Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (Cure) Adapted For Online Format, Ambika Kapil, Luis C. Gonzalez Isoba, Niraj Pathak, Arthur Sikora, Santanu De Apr 2023

Analysis Of Attitudinal Student Learning Benefits From A Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (Cure) Adapted For Online Format, Ambika Kapil, Luis C. Gonzalez Isoba, Niraj Pathak, Arthur Sikora, Santanu De

FDLA Journal

Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) are an increasingly utilized model for exposing students to research. The lack of robust assessments is a major hurdle to wider adoption of CUREs. The Coronavirus Infectious Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic necessitated a drastic shift of in-person courses to the online format. Using the Participant Perception Indicator (PPI) survey, we measured students’ self-reported changes in learning from such a biochemistry course at a large university in south Florida based on the Biochemistry Authentic Scientific Inquiry Lab (BASIL) model. By doing this, we were able to better understand the student-benefits of CUREs and how these benefits …

Combatting Abortion Misinformation And Disinformation In Medical Education, Jaya Prakash, Deborah Bartz Apr 2023

Combatting Abortion Misinformation And Disinformation In Medical Education, Jaya Prakash, Deborah Bartz

Feminist Pedagogy

Abstract Introduction: Although abortion has historically been federally legal, functional access to abortion care has been thwarted by inflammatory political discourse. Abortion misinformation and disinformation have been deliberately intertwined into political agendas and ideologies, widening the gap between the lay public’s perception of and patients’ lived experience with abortion care. The politicization of abortion care has adverse effects on its provision and training along lines of inequity and marginalization established by preexisting systems of oppression and structural violence. Critical feminist pedagogy—an examination of class, gender, and sexuality on patriarchal misrepresentations of abortion information—can guide medical students to recognize and combat …

Accreditation Of Teaching And Research Universities In Afghanistan: A Policy Implementation Analysis, Sayed Javid Mussawy Apr 2023

Accreditation Of Teaching And Research Universities In Afghanistan: A Policy Implementation Analysis, Sayed Javid Mussawy

Doctoral Dissertations

The quest for quality has encouraged many countries to establish quality assurance and accreditation models to sustain and improve quality. While some established their own procedures, a great majority of the countries including those in the developing world have adopted quality assurance policies developed in the Global North to respond to internationalization and to participate in the knowledge economy. However, most universities in developing countries lack adequate infrastructure to implement accreditation standards. Thus, investigating the implementation of accreditation policies in developing nations provides new insight into the opportunities and challenges posed by internationalization of quality assurance and accreditation. This study …
