The Office of Institutional Research

Created to support diverse students interested in the sciences, Smith College’s Achieving Excellence in Mathematics, Engineering, and Science (AEMES) programs have improved life science academic outcomes for women of color. Elements of Smith’s AEMES programs include leadership development, peer mentoring, and faculty-mentored research opportunities, all sharing the goals of building community, increasing academic engagement, and encouraging persistence for underrepresented students. Since launching AEMES, our students of color in the life sciences have shown significant gains in positive outcomes (introductory biology and chemistry course GPA; retention in life sciences majors), dissolving a previously observed gap in gateway course performance relative to …

High Expectations: The Impact Of Perfectionism And Religiosity On Female Body Image, Meredith J. Gross Jan 2014

High Expectations: The Impact Of Perfectionism And Religiosity On Female Body Image, Meredith J. Gross

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

In 2010 the American Psychological Association (APA) developed a task force to research the sexualization of girls. The APA found that eating disorders, low self-esteem, and depression were among the most prevalent mental health issues for women. The APA suggested that the trends of sexualization, mass media’s impact on culture, and the growing phenomenon of diets and weight loss supplements and medications helped to create unattainable ideas. These influences were found to have a significant relationship between women and dissatisfaction with their physical form. Because of the faith-based nature of the institution studied and the evidence that high levels of …

Picture Perfect: The Impact Of Spirituality And Media On Women's Sexuality, Diana Kim Jan 2014

Picture Perfect: The Impact Of Spirituality And Media On Women's Sexuality, Diana Kim

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Media plays a large role in the sexualization of women. The increase in sexual socialization of media has brought the hookup culture to college campuses. Moreover, it has led to several negative consequences in healthy sexual and identity development in females. Understanding that sexual well-being is vital in one’s development, higher education professionals have begun to take note of this increasingly important issue affecting the larger student body. Although sexuality is difficult to navigate for any emerging adult, it seems particularly complex for women who follow a specific religion. More specifically, Christian women from faith-based institutions face cultural pressures from …

Boys To Men: A Phenomenological Study Of Men's Construction Of Masculinity At A Faith-Based University, Taylor Thomas Smythe Jan 2014

Boys To Men: A Phenomenological Study Of Men's Construction Of Masculinity At A Faith-Based University, Taylor Thomas Smythe

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

In a time when increasing ambiguity in gender roles has become the norm, young men experience difficulty in knowing what masculinity truly means. For those men who hold to a specific religious or spiritual tradition, navigating this path to manhood can seem even more complex. The present study examines the interrelationship of masculinity and spirituality as it pertains to the experiences of males at a faith-based college. The research questions of the current study highlight two areas: 1) men’s construction of masculinity and 2) men’s experiences of masculinity in light of their spirituality. The researcher used a qualitative phenomenological method …

Young Entrants And Self-Authorship, Greta Johnson Jan 2014

Young Entrants And Self-Authorship, Greta Johnson

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

The purpose of the current study is to discover the impact that early college experiences have on the self-authorship of young entrants. The study explores the experiences of nine young entrants who participated in an early college experience at a faith-based liberal arts university in Minnesota. The study uncovers what aspects of self-authorship develop and those that have little growth. The following question guides the research: “What impact does the college experience have on the self-authorship of young entrants?” Findings include growth in areas of intrapersonal self-authorship: feeling like a traditional freshmen, learning study habits, time, and effort required for …

Report to Stakeholders

Ho Kwon Ping, together with our Board of Trustees and senior leaders, debated vigorously before endorsing a bold and exciting SMU Vision 2025. To achieve its objective of becoming a great university, it requires the institution to be a game-changer in education, a catalyst in cutting-edge research and an exemplar as a leading city university in Asia. Already, the transformative process is off to a quick start with several initiatives being launched (see “President’s State of the University Address 2014: Vision 2025 – Making it Real”). Research that is relevant and makes a positive impact on society is one of …

Off The Beaten Track: The Experiences Of Jamaican Student Athletes In Us Higher Education, Michelle Antoinette Rankine Jan 2014

Off The Beaten Track: The Experiences Of Jamaican Student Athletes In Us Higher Education, Michelle Antoinette Rankine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

International student athletes populating American colleges and universities have gained visibility and prestige due to their athletic and academic capabilities. International student athletes emerge from a variety of backgrounds. These backgrounds vary in terms of geographic origin, cultural orientation, and social custom. The students themselves also differ in the amount of change they, as individuals, experience during the migration process from their home countries to the United States. There have been many studies related to the traditional student athlete experience. However, recent literature fails to examine the experiences of international student athletes, and in particular, Jamaican student athletes, in terms …

Disciplinarity And Trandisciplinarity In The Study Of Knowledge, Jay H. Bernstein Jan 2014

Disciplinarity And Trandisciplinarity In The Study Of Knowledge, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

Scholarly inquiry about the nature and significance of knowledge has been shaped by disciplinary traditions and priorities that define “knowledge” differently and result in disconnected literatures. In the mid to late twentieth century, library science educator Jesse Shera sought to bridge the conceptual gap between epistemological and sociological approaches to knowledge in proposing a new discipline he called social epistemology. Around the same time, long-term projects by the economist Fritz Machlup and the physical chemist turned philosopher of science Michael Polanyi did not merely combine existing disciplinary approaches but transcended conventional frameworks for conceptualizing knowledge. These scholars can be viewed …

Slimmer, Brighter, And Nearly Perfect: The New Big History Textbook Is Here, Mojgan Behmand

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Rarely has the appearance of a new textbook been the cause of such delight as broke out amongst the First Year Experience faculty at Dominican University of California in August 2013. The book that triggered such reaction is a seemingly unassuming volume, Big History: Between Nothing and Everything (2013), written by historians David Christian, Cynthia Stokes Brown, and Craig Benjamin, and published by McGraw-Hill. Why was the book greeted with such enthusiasm, you might ask? Was it that the world needed another textbook on history? That the Dominican faculty felt a special bond with one of the authors, Dominican professor …
