Scientists Identify Plants That Combat Mrsa Infections, Sarah Gardner, Dave Albee

With antimicrobial resistance (AMR) a continued threat to global public health, a recent study by Dominican University of California researchers has identified two plants commonly used in Native American remedies as having potential to treat antibiotic-resistant infections, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections.

Parts Of The Whole: Quantitative Literacy On A Desert Island, Dorothy Wallace
Numeracy
Some of the specific institutional problems faced by quantitative reasoning courses, programs and requirements arise from the fragile intellectual position of “quantitative reasoning” as an idea, or meme. The process of isolation and reintroduction explains both the proliferation of living species and the way in which some difficult ideas take their place in a culture. Using evolutionary explanations as metaphor and the Copernican revolution as an example of a difficult idea, we draw lessons that can be applied to the “quantitative reasoning” meme, including the function of the National Numeracy Network as an island of protected discourse favoring the growth …

Transdisciplinarity: A Review Of Its Origins, Development, And Current Issues, Jay H. Bernstein
Publications and Research
Transdisciplinarity originated in a critique of the standard configuration of knowledge in disciplines in the curriculum, including moral and ethical concerns. Pronouncements about it were first voiced between the climax of government-supported science and higher education and the long retrenchment that began in the 1970s. Early work focused on questions of epistemology and the planning of future universities and educational programs. After a lull, transdisciplinarity re-emerged in the 1990s as an urgent issue relating to the solution of new, highly complex, global concerns, beginning with climate change and sustainability and extending into many areas concerning science, technology, social problems and …

Preparing Future Faculty (Pff) Program Annual Report, 2014-2015, Wie Yusuf
Career Pathways
It is the mission of the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) Program at Old Dominion University (ODU) to introduce graduate students and post-doctoral fellows to the diverse roles, the responsibilities, and the rewards of an academic career. In doing so it focuses particularly on the teaching and service roles sometimes not included in doctoral training. Fundamental research skills, such as grant writing, publishing, and academic job searching, are also addressed.
The PFF program offers a ‘Preparing Future Faculty Certificate’ to graduate students who document completion of specific activities related to preparing for an academic career. Any ODU and NSU degree-seeking graduate …
