Time To Career: Science And Engineering Education To Career Trajectories, Angie Nim Choi Dec 2015

Time To Career: Science And Engineering Education To Career Trajectories, Angie Nim Choi

Theses and Dissertations

Two waves of data from the 2006 and 2008 Survey of Earned Doctorates and Survey of Doctorate Recipients were used in this study to investigate time to doctorate (TTD) and time to career (TTC) for science and engineering PhDs. Three-way factorial ANOVAs were conducted, and TTD results indicated main effects for gender, US citizenship, and Biglan classification, and interaction effects for gender and US citizenship. US citizen PhDs progressed to their career approximately one mean year faster than foreign PhDs. For TTC, PhDs who held postdocs progressed to their careers in 14 and 15 years for females and males respectively …

This newsletter began with the Fall 2015 Honors English class. These students were challenged to initiate research over a topic they thought was interesting and show how it related to our campus, Stephen F. Austin State University. It is our hope that this cumulative research will help readers look at SFA a little differently.

Predicting Medical Student Success On Licensure Exams, Charles A. Gullo, Michael J. Mccarthy, Joseph I. Shapiro, Bobby L. Miller Dec 2015

Predicting Medical Student Success On Licensure Exams, Charles A. Gullo, Michael J. Mccarthy, Joseph I. Shapiro, Bobby L. Miller

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Many schools seek to predict performance on national exams required for medical school graduation using prematriculation and medical school performance data. The need for targeted intervention strategies for at-risk students has led much of this interest. Assumptions that preadmission data and high stakes in-house medical exams correlate strongly with national standardized exam performance needs to be examined. Looking at prematriculation data for predicting USMLE Step 1 performance, we found that MCAT exam totals and math-science GPA had the best prediction from a set of prematriculation values (adjusted R 2 = 11.7 %) for step 1. The addition of scores from …

Retention Of Community College Students In Online Courses, Sarah Krajewski Dec 2015

Retention Of Community College Students In Online Courses, Sarah Krajewski

Dissertations

The issue of attrition in online courses at higher learning institutions remains a high priority in the United States. A recent rapid growth of online courses at community colleges has been instigated by student demand, as they meet the time constraints many nontraditional community college students have as a result of the need to work and care for dependents. Failure in an online course can cause students to become frustrated with the college experience, financially burdened, or to even give up and leave college. Attrition could be avoided by proper guidance of who is best suited for online courses. This …

Investigating The Impact Of Reflexive Practices On College Students In A Science Laboratory Course, Chandrani Mishra Dec 2015

Investigating The Impact Of Reflexive Practices On College Students In A Science Laboratory Course, Chandrani Mishra

Dissertations

Emphasis on professional practices to develop students’ professionalism is currently a major focus of higher education. Studies have shown the benefits of reflexive practices in classroom to facilitate the development of students’ professional attitude or identity in some fields. Reflexive practices involve students in self-reflection where he/she reflects on his/her own actions. Little investigation about the benefits of reflexive practices in the development of students’ scientific identity in a science class led to my investigation. Development of a scientific identity of students and their overall interest and motivation in science is deemed essential for retaining students in STEM fields.

An Investigation Of At-Risk College Students Through Data Mining And Implementation Of Predictive Analysis, Nicole Alaine Cresse Dec 2015

An Investigation Of At-Risk College Students Through Data Mining And Implementation Of Predictive Analysis, Nicole Alaine Cresse

Kutztown University Masters Theses

This project will encompass an in-depth study of at-risk college students that implements both predictive analysis and data mining techniques. At-risk students are students with a specific set of demographics, study habits, and historical academic performance. Using predictive analysis, factors that directly correlate with student performance will be used to create a detection algorithm for particular student characteristics. From this data, it will be determined if a student is deemed “at-risk” academically, and if action needs to be taken by faculty or the student themselves.

The goal of this study is to determine the optimal algorithm that identifies at-risk students …

Redefining Significance: Experiences Of Humanities Faculty Engaged In Undergraduate Research, Susan Mendoza Dec 2015

Redefining Significance: Experiences Of Humanities Faculty Engaged In Undergraduate Research, Susan Mendoza

Dissertations

Programs that actively engage students in research and scholarship are the touchstone for integrating undergraduate education with authentic scholarly inquiry. Recent empirical studies demonstrate that undergraduate research experiences (URE) are related to increased student learning and development, increased levels of retention, increased enrollment in graduate school, and increased understanding of research as a vocation and profession. However, these seminal studies focus on URE in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) disciplines. Although there are some studies that explore undergraduate research in the social sciences and humanities, the accepted models and best practices of undergraduate research are entrenched in the …
