The Nature And Nurture Of Sports Performance, Jessica E. Salvatore
Great VCU Bike Race Book Faculty Reflections
Are world-class athletes born or raised? In this track, we will consider the nature and nurture of sports performance. The primary objective of this course is to expose students to the ways scientists try to disentangle genetic and environmental influences on human behavior. Course materials will include a variety of formats: selected chapters from David Epstein’s New York Times bestseller “The Sports Gene,” scientific articles, podcasts and videos. Students will use social media to record their reactions to course materials, and will further discuss readings/podcasts/videos with one another and the instructor via live chat sessions.

Creating A New University In A Time Of Political And Economic Conservatism, Alyson King Ph.D., Shirley Van Nuland Ph.D
System and Institutional Design and Transformation
The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) was the first new university to be established in Ontario in forty years and was created in a time of fiscal austerity by a Conservative government led by a Premier with a reputation for anti-intellectualism. In many ways, UOIT represents a new way of thinking about the nature of higher education that was prevalent at the time; in other ways, it was unable to effect a significant redesign of curriculum, administration, or structure.

Examining Academic Performance Among Pathway And Non-Pathway Health Sciences Students, Maurice Digiuseppe, Bil Goodman, Jennifer Percival, Arlene De La Rocha, Fabiola Longo
Credit Transfer and Recognition
Pathway programs providing opportunities for students to more efficiently earn university degrees and college diplomas are proliferating in Canada and internationally. In Ontario, Canada, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Durham College (DC) have jointly provided pathway programs for over a decade. These programs, in fields including science, health sciences (allied health sciences, kinesiology, nursing), social science and humanities (legal studies, criminology, commerce), nuclear power, and education (adult education, early childhood studies), facilitate inter-institutional transitions, and enable college graduates to obtain a 4-year (honours) university degree with as little as two additional years of study. This paper …

Development Of A University/College Pathway For Academic Success Remediation, Jennifer Percival, Glen Harvel, Joe Stokes, Alena Shah, Jeff Zakoor
Credit Transfer and Recognition
Some students have difficulty in achieving success in the first year of study. Programs are intensive and do not include capabilities to recover from deficiencies affecting academic performance. A mechanism is needed for students to break off from their program, and address their specific deficiencies, before returning. The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Durham College have developed a pathway for enhanced academic success to support students requiring remediation. The proposed pathway is done in such a way that successful students will be eligible to earn a General Arts and Science certificate concurrently with the continuation of their …
A Study Of Outcomes Based Educational Interventions And Moral Development Of Undergraduate College Students, Jay Christopher Robert Wildt
A Study Of Outcomes Based Educational Interventions And Moral Development Of Undergraduate College Students, Jay Christopher Robert Wildt
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Discussions regarding moral development and subsequent behavior are common in political and philosophical arenas. The consensus is that resolutions of moral dilemmas are best accomplished through careful deliberation and the use of principled moral reasoning. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in moral development in undergraduate college students who participated in an outcomes based education program. The study also investigated the influence of certain demographic and attribute variables on moral development within the same population.
This study examined extant data from 295 University of Charleston (UC) students who took the Defining Issues Test as freshmen and then …

Short-Term Relationships With Eternal Impact: Mentoring Male Students At Faith-Based Institutions, Joshua R. Craton
Short-Term Relationships With Eternal Impact: Mentoring Male Students At Faith-Based Institutions, Joshua R. Craton
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
Mentorship serves an important role in college student development. It provides individual support and guidance to students as they explore their identities and look for answers to life’s big questions. Over fifty running definitions of mentorship appear in social science literature (Crisp & Cruz, 2009); therefore, this study sought to describe mentorship in the context of university faculty members mentoring their male students. In order to define mentorship in this context, the researcher interviewed ten male college students who claimed to have a mentor. Their perspectives on mentorship provided a deeper understanding of how best to mentor men in college. …
Exploring The Shared Cores Of Gender Issues: The Significance Of Same-Sex Interactions As Pathways To Equality And Reconciliation, Charles Warren Allen
Exploring The Shared Cores Of Gender Issues: The Significance Of Same-Sex Interactions As Pathways To Equality And Reconciliation, Charles Warren Allen
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
Achieving gender reconciliation involves the consideration of many different conflicts between the sexes, from institutional to individual conflict. Men and women have identified inequality in workplaces (Elkins, Phillips, & Konopaske, 2001), education systems (Ancis & Phillips, 1996), sexualized media (Hoyt & Kogan, 2001) and judicial courts (Sanauddin, 2012). Additionally, negative personal relationships have led to deeply rooted mistrust between men and women (Nomaguchi, Giordano, & Manning, 2011). Conflict exists at the most basic level of identity formation. Gender identities comprise behaviors and traits that have opposing gender associations (Long, Fish, Scheffler, & Hanert, 2014; Monin, Clark, & Lemay, 2008). Efforts …
