The Tidewater Z-Degree And The Intro Model For Sustaining Oer Adoption, David Wiley, Linda Williams, Daniel Demarte, John Hilton Mar 2016

The Tidewater Z-Degree And The Intro Model For Sustaining Oer Adoption, David Wiley, Linda Williams, Daniel Demarte, John Hilton

Entrepreneurship Faculty Research

A growing body of research confirms the financial and academic benefits that accrue to students whose faculty adopt open educational resources, or OER. While there are no content licensing costs associated with using OER, there are several real costs that must be incurred by an institution that chooses to support its faculty in adopting OER. The Z-Degree initiative at Tidewater Community College utilizes only OER for the 21 courses, providing a pathway for students to earn an associate of science degree in business administration without ever buying a textbook. The authors introduce and illustrate the INTRO (Increased Tuition Revenue through …

CREATE (Consider, Read, Elucidate the hypotheses, Analyze and interpret the data, and Think of the next Experiment) is an innovative pedagogy for teaching science through the intensive analysis of scientific literature. Initiated at the City College of New York, a minority-serving institution, and regionally expanded in the New York/New Jersey/Pennsylvania area, this methodology has had multiple positive impacts on faculty and students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics courses. To determine whether the CREATE strategy is effective at the community college (2-yr) level, we prepared 2-yr faculty to use CREATE methodologies and investigated CREATE implementation at community colleges in seven …

Learning The Language Of Academic Engineering: Sociocognitive Writing In Graduate Students, Catherine G. P. Berdanier Mar 2016

Learning The Language Of Academic Engineering: Sociocognitive Writing In Graduate Students, Catherine G. P. Berdanier

Open Access Dissertations

Although engineering graduate programs rarely require academic writing courses, the indicators of merit in academic engineering, such as journal publications, successful grants, and doctoral milestones (e.g. theses, dissertations) are based in effective written argumentation and disciplinary discourse. Further, graduate student attrition averages 57% across all disciplines, with some studies classifying up to 50% of these students as “ABD” (All But Dissertation.) In engineering disciplines specifically, graduate attrition rates across the U.S. average 36% (both Master’s and PhD students), according to the Council of Graduate Schools. The lack of socialization is generally noted as a main reason for graduate attrition, one …

Flipped Teaching And Learning In English Language Programmes In Higher Education, Rania M Rafik Khalil

English Language and Literature

Flipped teaching over the past fifteen years has invaded the classrooms of schools and has helped evolve the teaching strategy of different disciplines. Although the concept emerged as inverted teaching to allow space for active learning in the classroom, flipped teaching today, has found its way to higher education settings. Higher education institutions such as Harvard University, have used this approach in physics and other disciplines. Literature reviews however, show that there is little research in the field of English as a Foreign Language which can be found related to using the flipped approach. This paper aims to share the …

Cracks In The Cornerstone: Toward More Informed Decision-Making In Rhetorical Education, David M. Grant

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In their forum on the First-Year Cornerstone course, April Chatham-Carpenter and Deedee Heistad (2015) explain their memories of developing the program and sketch a vision of what they hope they have achieved. Certainly, all involved have worked "toward the goal of helping first-year students succeed in college," and they should be commended for their dedication and efforts to bring together often disconnected parts of the university in the name of improving student learning, retention, and overall satisfaction. As an early member of the planning team who assisted bringing the proposal for Cornerstone to the Liberal Arts Core Committee in 2010 …

Building A Culture Of Academic Integrity [Baker], Kimberly M. Baker

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The decision to invite keynote speaker James M. Lang to the conference, and the creation of the morning plenary panel in particular, was born out of a book group that Martha Reineke and I participated in on Lang’s book, Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty (2013). In this book, Lang argues that our best strategies for reducing cheating involve using effective pedagogies that focus on promoting learning. Thus, in contrast to approaches to academic dishonesty that focus on teaching students to fear the consequences of being caught and corresponding surveillance strategies that assume all students are potential cheaters, Lang’s …

Classification Accuracy Of Mixed Format Tests: A Bi-Factor Item Response Theory Approach, Wei Wang, Fritz Drasgow, Liwen Liu Feb 2016

Classification Accuracy Of Mixed Format Tests: A Bi-Factor Item Response Theory Approach, Wei Wang, Fritz Drasgow, Liwen Liu

Publications and Research

Mixed format tests (e.g., a test consisting of multiple-choice [MC] items and constructed response [CR] items) have become increasingly popular. However, the latent structure of item pools consisting of the two formats is still equivocal. Moreover, the implications of this latent structure are unclear: For example, do constructed response items tap reasoning skills that cannot be assessed with multiple choice items? This study explored the dimensionality of mixed format tests by applying bi-factor models to 10 tests of various subjects from the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Program and compared the accuracy of scores based on the bi-factor analysis with …

Wage Distribution Impacts Of Higher Education Faculty Unionization, Charles S. Wassell Jr, David W. Hedrick, Steven E. Henson, John M. Krieg Feb 2016

Wage Distribution Impacts Of Higher Education Faculty Unionization, Charles S. Wassell Jr, David W. Hedrick, Steven E. Henson, John M. Krieg

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

The literature on the effects of unions on the distribution of wages at the macroeconomic and inter-industry levels has given little attention to the effects at the firm level. At the same time, research on collective bargaining impacts in higher education has focused on the overall wage level rather than on the distribution of salaries. Using panel data on individual faculty members, we find faculty unionization to be associated with a significant flattening of the wage distribution across academic disciplines. This has implications for why faculty might choose to unionize, even in the absence of an overall wage premium.
