Interview With Eileen Gregory, Eileen Gregory, Wenxian Zhang Mar 2017

Interview With Eileen Gregory, Eileen Gregory, Wenxian Zhang

Oral Histories

Eileen Gregory received her BS from Michigan State University, an MS & PhD in microbiology from The University of Washington, where her research focused on freshwater bacteria. As a young professor in Biology, Eileen Gregory came to Rollins College in 1979, one of two women in the department’s faculty of five, when the sciences were dominated by men. She never expected to be at Rollins all her professional career: “I came to Rollins with the idea that I would stay here for three years and move on,” Gregory says. “But I love my colleagues; I love my students; and for …

Relating Christian Faith To Physics For Scientists And Engineers, Dominic Halsmer, Calvin Roso, P. Wesley Odom

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

As part of an initiative by the new Center for Faith and Learning at Oral Roberts University, an introductory college-level physics course for scientists and engineers was reconfigured to facilitate the integration of physics and Christian faith. Regular readings from a popular book, Einstein and Religion (Jammer, 1999), on the compatibility between physics and Christian doctrine were assigned. Questions based on the readings were then posed and a small fraction of class time (10%) was reserved for discussion of these issues. The students also submitted book reports summarizing their perspectives at the end of the course. A detailed rubric was …

The Perceptions Of Alternative Education Students Ages 18-21 About The Factors In The Traditional School Setting That Inhibited Their On-Time High School Graduation, Ericka Roberson Hursey Mar 2017

The Perceptions Of Alternative Education Students Ages 18-21 About The Factors In The Traditional School Setting That Inhibited Their On-Time High School Graduation, Ericka Roberson Hursey

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how students ages 18-21 who are currently enrolled in a non-traditional educational setting articulate their educational pathway. The narrative inquiry method of research allowed the research participants to tell “their stories” in “their own” words. The research participants could articulate their views and perceptions on the factors that affected their educational pathway. Thirteen participants participated in the focus groups sessions and in-depth, semi-structured interviews.

Bronfenbrenner’s social systems theory (1979), environmental factors, educational experiences, excessive discipline infractions, and legal problems were dominant themes in the study. The study examined the at-risk social, …

Assessing Evolutionary Reasoning Of Introductory Biology Students, Sarah Spier

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

Question: Does proficiency in natural selection knowledge predict the quality of student reasoning of reproductive potential as a component of fitness?

Hypothesis: Students with higher scores on the Concept Inventory of Natural Selection (CINS) will have more accurate descriptions of reproductive potential as a part of fitness.

Goals: Assess student ability to reason about fitness and selection in a variety of contexts. Assess student reasoning of evolutionary implications of an ecological scenario

Enhancing Science And Engineering Programs To Equip And Inspire Missionaries In Technical Communities, Dominic M. Halsmer, Jon M. Asper, Ben Zigrang Mar 2017

Enhancing Science And Engineering Programs To Equip And Inspire Missionaries In Technical Communities, Dominic M. Halsmer, Jon M. Asper, Ben Zigrang

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Enhancements to science and engineering curricula are being considered in light of theologically-significant scientific discoveries, as well as the field application to form a coherent cosmology and worldview. In addition to including these ideas in current science and engineering courses, a new “Science and Faith” course is being developed to better equip and inspire science and engineering graduates for serving as “everyday” missionaries in their chosen fields.

This new course will focus on the knowledge and skills necessary for graduates to engage in fruitful dialogue with seekers from high-tech and highly-educated societies. Students will receive training in science-related apologetics, including …

Using Lost In Translation To Prepare Students For The Physical, Emotional And Spiritual Realities Of International Business, Ivan Filby

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Over the last 30 years, international business opportunities have become more widespread. This rise in global business opportunities has not gone unnoticed by missiologists, and the development of the Business as Mission (BAM) movement has introduced a new realm of possibilities of linking business and mission. One potential weakness of this model is that international business managers often do not receive any missiological or theological training. It is likely that they receive less prayer support, less in-the-field support, and probably weaker moral accountability. As a result, many may be unaware of the some of the difficulties that they may face …
