Improving Literacy Rates For Students With Dyslexia In A Rural School District, Steven W. Havens, Michael Seth Mott
Improving Literacy Rates For Students With Dyslexia In A Rural School District, Steven W. Havens, Michael Seth Mott
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
This applied research study aimed to improve literacy rates for students identified as having dyslexic tendencies in the Lynn County School District (LCSD). The need to improve literacy rates of students with dyslexia in the Reaching Reading Success Program was identified through Mississippi K-3 Assessment Support System data. Using the two elements found in the program evaluation, accurate identification of dyslexic students and multisensory interventions the study sought to improve the literacy rates for students with dyslexia in kindergarten. Assessment, survey, and interview data were used in this applied research study to determine success. The findings indicated early identification, multi-sensory …

From Oral To Written Language: Scaffolding Literacy Development In A Kindergarten Classroom, Cynthia Leung
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
The purpose of the present study was to explore how an experienced kindergarten teacher used oral language to scaffold her students in their development of written language skills. The research design was a yearlong qualitative case study that employed prolonged engagement, persistent observation, and triangulation. Data sources included participant observation, fieldnotes, audio and video recording of classroom literacy events, informal interviews with the teacher and students, photographs, and a collection of students’ drawings/writings. This article provides examples of read-aloud and writing events where the classroom teacher made connections between oral and written language or re-accented the students’ oral productions into …

An Alternative To Acetolysis: Application Of An Enzyme-Based Method For The Palynological Preparation Of Fresh Pollen, Honey Samples And Bee Capsules, Jennifer M. K. O'Keefe, Carol L. Wymer
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Acetolysis has been widely used for the preparation of modern pollen samples since its introduction by Erdtman. It has several disadvantages in both safety and resultant changes to the size and, in some cases, structure of pollen grains. The enzymatic technique introduced by Schols and colleagues is tested on a fresh pollen sample, a honey sample and a bee pollen capsule. The technique increases processing time, but is completely non-toxic, easy to complete and comparable in cost to acetolysis. Even very fragile grains are not damaged by this technique.

Social Scholarship? Academic Communications In The Digital Age, Steven Weiland
Social Scholarship? Academic Communications In The Digital Age, Steven Weiland
Charleston Library Conference
A recent sign of the technological transformation of scholarship is the consolidation of views about the emergence of the “digital scholar,” a variation on the influential reform minded account of faculty work associated with Ernest Boyer’s Scholarship Reconsidered (1990). An essential feature of this new form of academic practice and identity is named “social scholarship,” or participation in scholarly communications via the growing variety of digital networks for professional interaction. Scholars and librarians can recognize the change while acknowledging the durability of academic workflow conventions. Libraries can guide the faculty in social scholarship and be gadflies in matters of the …

style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">Digital information and communication technologies are rapidly changing how we understand our identities and institutions. Five hundred years ago, new printing technologies created conditions that enabled the Protestant reformation and profoundly changed the world. Today, we are in the midst of a digital revolution. But what is being reformed, and what are we reforming? This session will explore the nature of our present information age and the theological questions it raises, touching on theological principles, cultural critiques, and spiritual practices that can help us reflect on digital reformation and transformation.
