Sustainability Of Study Abroad Programs At Rural Community Colleges, Michelle Lieberman
Sustainability Of Study Abroad Programs At Rural Community Colleges, Michelle Lieberman
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
In this era of increased globalization, it is important to prepare students to participate in world issues and a worldwide economy. Study abroad increases knowledge regarding international affairs, boosts access to valuable cross-cultural experiences, and promotes academic success, retention (Raby, Rhodes, & Biscarra, 2014), cultural awareness (Clarke, Flaherty, Wright, & McMillen, 2009), and professional growth (Younes & Asay, 2003). Community colleges educate nearly half of the nation’s undergraduate students, but offer disproportionately few study-abroad programs (Hardy & Katsinas, 2007). Little existing research has documented the study abroad experiences of community college students. Even fewer studies have addressed sparse community college …

A Correlational Study Of Preadmission And Early Program Predictors Of Physician Assistant Certification Exam Scores, Jennifer Pack
A Correlational Study Of Preadmission And Early Program Predictors Of Physician Assistant Certification Exam Scores, Jennifer Pack
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
As the physician assistant profession continues to grow, the number of physician assistant programs and the number of applicants to these programs are increasing dramatically. Programs should be diligent to choose students who are likely to be successful in the program and on passing the Physician Assistant National Certification Exam. In addition to selection processes that consider preadmission criteria, programs should also have processes in place to identify students at risk of failure to allow time to implement remediation plans. This study employed a correlational research design, attempting to demonstrate a predictive relationship between the predictor variables, undergraduate science GPA, …
A Correlational Study On Components Of Hybrid Course Delivery And Student Success In Introductory Statistics, Gail Moore Mcgowan
A Correlational Study On Components Of Hybrid Course Delivery And Student Success In Introductory Statistics, Gail Moore Mcgowan
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Hybrid course delivery has become a popular course design in general education large enrollment courses. While the benefits of hybrid course design are detailed in many studies, little research has been conducted on the contribution specific components make toward student success. In this quantitative research study, a correlational design with a multiple regression technique was used to examine the relationship between average weekly quiz grade, number of weekly quiz attempts, weekly lab attendance, weekly time spent in class with the professor and student conceptual understanding in the introductory statistics course. This research study was conducted at a private university located …

Promoting Tolerance Through Learning About Human Evolution And Creation Myths, Afsoon Alishahi
Promoting Tolerance Through Learning About Human Evolution And Creation Myths, Afsoon Alishahi
Doctoral Dissertations
The role that religion plays in the lives of humans is complex, contradictory, and deeply impactful. According to Allport (1979), religion has a paradoxical function in that it can either combat or contribute to prejudice. A meta-analysis by Hall, Matz, and Wood (2010) found a significant correlation between being deeply religious and having racial prejudice. Similarly, many social scientific studies since 1940 have concluded that religious individuals are more prejudiced than less religious individuals (Hunsberger & Jackson, 2005).
Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine whether gaining knowledge about human evolution, creation myths, and their relationship to religious …

Adaptive Leadership Approaches In Online Education: A Study Of Trust Creation And Change Management In Higher Education, Andrew R. Casiello
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
The focus of this study was to determine which aspects of “Adaptive Leadership” are most commonly used by leaders in online education at doctoral research institutions where online education is playing a major role in enrollment. Within this study, the current state of higher education is reviewed and major changes in the financial, technological and competitive landscape are discussed. Challenges within the higher education context are addressed. These challenges include the increasing cost of a college education, decreased state support for public institutions, reduction of regional hegemony caused by technological advancements, increasing competition for students, and student demand for greater …

Cultivating Grit: Faculty Influence On Females' Academic Success In Engineering Majors, Lisa Lynn Wymer
Cultivating Grit: Faculty Influence On Females' Academic Success In Engineering Majors, Lisa Lynn Wymer
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships between the positive and negative factors that impact undergraduate female engineering students’ academic success in their programs. While females participate and persist in higher education at higher rates than their male counterparts, engineering is one field of study where gender disparity remains especially apparent, as males continue to outnumber females in engineering degree attainment (Ross, Kena, Rathbun, KewalRamani, Zhang, Kristapovich, & Manning, 2012, Schreuders, Mannon, & Rutherford, 2009, Tsui, 2009). The conceptual framework for this study was based on Tinto’s Longitudinal Model of Institutional Departure, which provides the theoretical foundation …

Student-Faculty Connection And Stem Identity In The Flipped Classroom, Adrian P. Gentle, William Wilding
Student-Faculty Connection And Stem Identity In The Flipped Classroom, Adrian P. Gentle, William Wilding
ASEE IL-IN Section Conference
Students who arrive at college intending to major in a STEM discipline are often required to complete a college-level precalculus course, despite evidence that these courses are not always successful in preparing students for calculus. The implementation of evidence-based teaching strategies, such as the flipped classroom, provides an avenue for improving the effectiveness of precalculus. This quasi-experimental study explores the effect of a flipped precalculus classroom on students' degree of connection with their instructor and other students, together with their sense of motivation and enjoyment of mathematics, which we treat as an indicator of a developing STEM identity. Validated survey …
