The notion of the “Entrepreneurial University” refers to a type of educational institution that enhances university-industry cooperation, applies innovative learning methods, and promotes multidisciplinary approaches. This article explores new challenges that Azerbaijani universities have faced as part of the Azerbaijani higher education transformation in the post-Soviet period. The research investigated the experiences of Western-style universities that have been building relationships with Western partners with substantial leadership experience in university innovation and, specifically, in establishing entrepreneurial universities. This paper argues that Azerbaijan's transition to a knowledge economy will require a substantive transformation of the country’s higher education system and, as such, …

The purpose of this honors graduation thesis is to analyze the role of nutrition in the prevention, management, and treatment of chronic diseases and to argue that clinical nutrition should be reintegrated into American medical education as a high priority subject. The thesis begins with a historical review of clinical nutrition beginning in the fifth century B.C. with Hippocrates in Classical Greece and ending in 21st century America. Following the historical review, five of some of the most prevalent chronic diseases in America are examined through a nutritional lens. Often working in multiple roles and operating at multiple scales, educational developers deal with layered tensions and a complex context that can be difficult for an individual or team to reconcile. In May 2020, the authors participated in a cross-institutional scholarly project, the Pandemic Educational Development Research Collaborative (PEDRC), designed to explore the impact of multiple crises (e.g., the COVID-19 pandemic and our collective civil and political unrest) and associated large-scale instructional changes on educational developers and their work. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has demanded large-scale collaboration within all organizations, including higher education, and taking teaching and learning seriously, in this moment, means leveraging partnerships to address the wicked (large, complex) problems cited by Bass (2020). These problems are not ours alone to solve; rather, we make the case for a “wicked consciousness,” an amalgam of perspectives, in educational development. Guided by intellectual humility, our success as educational developers ought to be measured by the quality of our collaborations as well as our ability to learn with others, form equitable partnerships, and lead others by our example.

Due to the “wicked problem” of the Academy’s resistance to innovation, new teaching and learning programs struggle to become integrated into the fabric of the Academy, which slows the uptake of evidence-based practices. This wicked problem is rooted in the lack of slow, intentional mechanisms for cultural change in the Academy. In this article, we analyze the institutionalization journey of the Departmental Action Team (DAT) project, which is a model for slow, intentional change. Over the last four years, partnering with two campus centers for teaching and learning (CTLs) allowed the DAT project to make institutionalization progress.

In this portfolio teaching materials, activities, and assessments applied in a Soil Chemistry & Mineralogy” online graduate class are analyzed towards their suitability to achieve learning objectives and class goals. For this, data from class surveys, a decision matrix, and individual student feedback are the main sources of information. The survey revealed that the learning objectives are successfully addressed. Lecture videos, quizzes, exams, scientific paper reading assignments, and a review paper assignment were evaluated to be suitable in achieving these objectives. The purpose of this quantitative, predictive correlational study was to determine the prevalence of food and housing insecurities at one historically Black college and explore whether these insecurities influence students’ academic performance or their mental health quality. The study also explored possible predictors of students at risk of experiencing these basic needs challenges. A convenience sample of 175 participant surveys was collected in the fall 2021 semester at the small, private, liberal arts college in urban South Carolina. Streptomyces coelicolor is a filamentous Gram-positive soil bacterium that grows similarly to fungi. The bacteria grow together in a mycelium-like structure that produces aerial hyphae above the media surface for sporulation. Evenly spaced crosswalls develop during cell division of the aerial filaments with the aid of division genes, including ftsZ and ftsQ. These cell division genes are essential for growth in the common bacterium and if silenced will cause the bacterium to die. Streptomyces uniquely retains the ability for growth after a deletion of either the ftsZ or ftsQ gene which causes a loss of septum formation in the …

Streptomyces coelicolor is a soil-dwelling, Gram-positive Actinobacteria. Streptomyces species produce thousands of secondary metabolites which include many antibiotics used in medicine today. In Streptomyces development, as colonies grow, secondary metabolites are produced, and ultimately mature spores are dispersed. The production of each of these secondary metabolites in wild-type Streptomyces is determined by a distinct biosynthetic pathway. In order to identify new genes for antibiotic production and other aspects of development, an engineered Tn5-derived transposon was used to mutagenize wild-type cells in vivo and produce single, stable insertions.

The degree to which sustainability is taught is often varied and inconsistent across colleges, departments, and higher education institutions. However, educating students and future generations regarding the different pillars of sustainability, including economic, social, and environmental topics, is increasing in importance and urgency. A mixed methods case study utilized surveys and interviews to investigate why instructors incorporate sustainability, what impacts course incorporation of sustainability, and barriers that instructors face. This study found that instructors’ beliefs regarding the importance of sustainability relate to the extent to which sustainability is incorporated into their curriculum. Sex Differences In Lateral Hypothalamic Extracellular Glucose Concentrations During Cumulative Dosing Of Methamphetamine In Rats, Joshua A. Jolton

The present study experimentally investigated sex differences in lateral hypothalamic glucose concentrations following cumulative dosing of methamphetamine. Male (n=17) and female (n=11) rats were surgically implanted with enzyme-based glucose biosensors in the lateral hypothalamus. Rats then received a saline injection followed by four methamphetamine doses (0.025 mg/kg, 0.05 mg/kg, 0.1 mg/kg, and 0.2 mg/kg) spaced 55 minutes apart. We found that while there was a general decrease in glucose baseline throughout the study for both sexes, the magnitude of the decrease was significantly greater in females compared to males. Background: Feedback is one of the most powerful and essential tools for learning and assessment, particularly when it provides the information necessary to close an existing gap between actual and reference levels of performance. The literature on feedback has primarily focused on addressing strategies for providing effective feedback rather than aspects of students’ readiness to engage with feedback. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand, as a lived experience, the parents’ quality of life (QoL) with young adult children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) residing on a college campus. In addition, this study helped understand parent experiences related to factors about transition and their QoL. For parents of adult children with ASD in a college residency setting, many stressful and challenging times were attributed to their child living outside the home, which ultimately impacted parental stress and the parents’ QoL. The purpose of this phenomenological study was aimed to describe the experiences of twelve students with disabilities at a higher education institution in Maryland. The theory that guided this study was Luigi Taparelli d’Azeglio’s (1843) and John Rawls’s social justice theory. The social justice theory addresses the importance of equality, access, liberty, and the fair distribution of resources in society to promote social and economic development for all. A qualitative methodology was used to execute the study. Data was collected using focus groups, interviews, and letters.
