Occlusive thrombosis, a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, claims the lives of 1 in 4 individuals. Developing novel antithrombotic treatments is crucial, as conventional antiplatelet drugs, despite their potency, have limitations like increased bleeding risk. Natural bioactive compounds offer a promising alternative due to their safety, efficacy, and affordability. This research project aims to identify and investigate the synergistic and antagonistic effects of bioactive compound combinations in modulating thrombosis therapy.

Prokaryotic and eukaryotic chromosome structure differs. Generally, prokaryotes have a single circular chromosome, while eukaryotes have multiple linear chromosomes. It is widely hypothesized that linear eukaryotic chromosomes evolved and arose from circular prokaryotic chromosomes and were a perquisite for sexual reproduction.

The Highland Shiner, Notropis micropteryx, is a minnow species common in the Green, Cumberland, and Tennessee river drainages and usually inhabits rocky riffles (Eisenhour and Eisenhour 2004). Despite the Highland Shiner's prevalence in this area, little published information exists describing the life history of this minnow species. Although N micropteryx is a small fish, attention must be given to its biology, as changes in its abundance are likely to affect other members of its aquatic community. Population and life cycle fluctuations can also be a reliable indicator of greater ecosystem health.

lvermectin is used in dogs and cats as a preventive medicine against heartworms. It is also used as a treatment for other parasites. lvermectin can be administered through tablets, topical liquid or injectable liquid. Some dog breeds such as border collies or sheepdogs have a sensitivity to the medication. The only safe heartworm preventive collies can take is Interceptor. But why? This is because lvermectin and other heartworm preventives have the drug Loperamide in them. They put it in there to reduce gastrointestinal secretions. Carbonyl Sulfide (OCS) is a toxic gas produced during the refinement of oil, use of diesel engines, and as a byproduct of natural gas. Excess exposure can cause severe skin burns as well as breathing difficulties. Two approaches are available to remove this toxic chemical from the air: ( 1) to isolate the gas after it has been produced and released into the atmosphere or (2) to remove the gas as it is being produced during combustion. Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the buildup of amyloid-beta (AB) protein in the brain, which disrupts brain function and leads to cognitive decline. Current research focuses on finding ways to reduce AB plaques.

Withaferin A, a compound found in Ashwagandha, a medicinal herb, shows promise as a potential treatment for Alzheimer's disease. Studies suggest Withaferin A may target AB, potentially by mechanisms beyond its interaction with acetylcholinesterase. Acetylcholinesterase is an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter important for memory and learning, but it's not the sole focus of current AB-targeting therapies.

• Electronic structure methods are being used to study the addition of CS2. OCS and CO2 to Group IV (MO2)n and Group VI (MO3)n (n = 1, 2, 3) nanoclusters, beginning with the MO2 and MO3 monomers according to a "bottom-up" approach.

• Physisorption is a process in which molecules bind through Van der Waals interactions. The enthalpies of these reactions are rather low, and these interactions are usually favored at lower temperatures.

• Chemisorption is adsorption in which chemical bonds are broken and/or formed therefore, an entirely new chemical species is formed.

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to discover through the perceptions and lived experiences of biomedical research Ph.D. alums who earned their terminal degree at a southern regional Historically Black College and University (HBCU) if the formative feedback they received impacted their dissertation process. Guided by Bandura’s social learning theory and it’s suggestions of how behavior cultivated by a mentor’s actions and feedback changes the mentee’s behavior and can mature into self-efficacy. Collecting baseline data on species or taxa of interest is crucial prior to conducting targeted restoration or management activities to determine if such actions had the desired outcomes. The purpose of this project was to acoustically identify the species of bats present at the former Emery Landfill site in Wichita Kansas. Data collected will serve as a baseline for future monitoring and restoration activities at the site. Three SM4Bat acoustic detectors were deployed at the site from June-October, 2023. The Scalable Effects Simulation Environment(SESE), is the computational Biophysics software contracted by Nanohmics we used for our research. The goal was to find the minimum energy necessary to damage the retina from 2 laser sources, a 532 nm He-Ne source, and Supercontinuum Laser(SCL) source at 400-1400nm. We needed a 10 times damage ratio for significance. Our data did not show this trend.

Proteins play pivotal roles in essential life processes and elucidating their three-dimensional (3D) structures is crucial for understanding their functions. AlphaFold2, an advanced artificial intelligence-based method developed by Google DeepMind, has emerged as a promising tool for predicting protein structures. In this study, we evaluated the predictive capabilities of AlphaFold2. Our findings highlight AlphaFold2's efficacy in providing valuable insights into protein structure prediction, albeit with certain limitations. While AlphaFold2 represents a significant advancement in the field, its utility is best realized when integrated with complementary experimental approaches. Antibiotic resistance is a detrimental worldwide challenge, producing bacterial infections that are progressively more difficult to treat and cure. To attempt to help alleviate this issue, we screened soil samples for the presence of antibiotic-producing microorganisms. Soil samples were collected and diluted to 1:100 and 1:1000 ratios of soil and distilled water. These soil mixtures were then streaked onto tryptic soy agar (TSA) plates and incubated at 30℃ until colonies developed. These colonies were then selected and plated on a lawn of Serratia marcescens, which was utilized as the target organism.

Feather coloration is used for social signaling in many avian species, and can be associated with their ability to live and breed in habitats with high quality resources (Jenkins et al. 2013, Saino et al. 2013). It can signify individual quality, (Saino et al. 2013) and influence mate choice (Bennet et al. 1996). We analyzed different aspects of Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) feather coloration in relation to morphology and habitat characteristics. There is currently a shortage of organs available to perform allotransplants in humans, prompting the exploration of xenotransplantation as an alternative. Xenotransplantation is the transplantation of living tissues between different species, with porcine tissues being a promising option. However, concerns arise regarding cross-species transmission, particularly in relation to Porcine Endogenous Retroviruses (PERVs). PERVs are retroviruses that are integrated into the germ-line cells of pigs and are permanently embedded in the host cell’s DNA, allowing for vertical transmission. By injecting an electron into the empty pie* molecular orbital (LUMO) of Amino Acids in gas phase, we measure the Vertical Attachment Energies (VAEs) for the formation of short-lived anion states of these species using electron transmission spectroscopy (ETS). Our ETS study, a first of its kind to measure the VAE for the simplest of proteins, Glycine-Glycine (Gly-Gly), is currently in progress. Based on our previous measurements for several Amino Acids including Glycine, we expect a common range of attachment energy (1.50 – 2.00 eV) for Gly-Gly.

On average, the college graduation rates for minority and/or high-need students are generally low. To address this situation, a Mid-Atlantic Consortium recently secured a grant to improve 4-year graduation rates of high-need students (i.e., new first-time students and transfer students who qualify as low-income students, first-generation college students, adult students, and/or students of color) by 20% over each selected college’s baseline. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the experiences of students and faculty mentors toward accomplishing this goal. Data were transcribed, coded, and analyzed thematically. Agricultural practices have significant and often negative effects on native bee populations. It is imperative that we understand how current agricultural practices affect native bees. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is cultivated heavily in western Kansas and is grown in rotation with winter wheat. This analysis presents preliminary results from a study conducted in summer 2023 in which pan traps were placed adjacent to two sorghum and two wheat fields in Ellis Co. Kansas. This data is part of a larger study examining the relationship between native bees and sorghum in western Kansas.
