Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Background: IPE and Practice-based Learning

It is well established that there is a need for Interprofessional Education (IPE) in the current landscape of health education1 and students that participate in IPE enjoy these experiences and develop skills in interprofessional teamwork that prepare them for future team-based practice.2,3,4 IPE, however, is not standardized. It ranges from programs that teach theoretical frameworks in a classroom setting to others that allow interprofessional teams of students to work together in a clinical setting.5,6 The second form is referred to as practice-based learning (PrBL).3 PrBL is now considered by experts as one of the most …

We Get To Carry Each Other: Using The Musical Activism Of U2 As Framework For An Engaged Spirituality And Community Engagement Course, Marshall Welch

Engaging Pedagogies in Catholic Higher Education (EPiCHE)

This article describes a January term community engagement service-learning course that used the musical and spiritually-based activism of the rock group U2 as an example of engaged spirituality using activism and advocacy. In addition to learning about the history, music, and activism of the band, students were taught a specific set of skills for activism, advocacy, and community organizing that included creating goal statements, developing and implementing action plans, and coordinating logistics for advocacy-based events on campus. Students were assigned to apply these skills as the service-learning component of the course. These activities were conceptualized as indirect service that reflected …

There is broad consensus that reduction in health care disparities is an important and multi-faceted challenge. One possible approach, among many others, starts with the attraction of women and men to the field of medicine who have a broad based education and who can demonstrate cultural understanding and sensitivity. In this context, the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) has been revised, effective in 2015, to include many additional questions concerning the psychological, social, and behavioral sciences. There are important assumptions fueling the revised Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and these will need to be tested. These assumptions range from influencing …

The Introduction to Equine Assisted Family Therapy course offered at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) provides Master’s and Doctoral level student therapists the opportunity to learn how to conduct an equine session and how to utilize horses as part of the therapeutic process. Students learn about the underlying theories and framework behind the equine activities and methodology, as well as participate in the equine activities themselves. For the purpose of this study, classroom discussions centered around processing the students’ experiences and were further enriched by viewing photographs and videos that had been taken of the students conducting the equine activities. Meet Cara Carter, fourth-year pharmacy student

Cara Carter grew up on the south side of Kansas City, Missouri. While she lived in a decidedly urban environment, Carter says the health care experiences in her hometown are not that different than those found in rural settings.

“It is definitely a health care desert so I know what it is like for there not to be a doctor for miles,” says Carter, a fourth-year student pharmacist attending East Tennessee State University’s Gatton College of Pharmacy. “There are veterinarian offices and some clinics that take place for back-to-school physicals, but there is no …

Many schools of psychology and religious studies intend to promote the cultivation of compassion. Compassion is currently an integral area of study in psychology, religious studies, and higher education, specifically in faith-based higher education. While secular universities in the United States strive to generate disciplinary-based knowledge through scholarship, their ability to promote students' use of the information they are learning to create positive social change has typically lagged.
