Building Uncommon Community With A Common Book, Colleen T. Boff, Schroeder Robert, Joy Gambill Jan 2005

Building Uncommon Community With A Common Book, Colleen T. Boff, Schroeder Robert, Joy Gambill

University Libraries Faculty Publications

Library involvement with Campus Reading Experiences (CRE) at two community colleges and two four-year institutions are described. The case studies were chosen because each reflects a strong library presence in institutional level program planning and instructional development for deeper student learning related to the CRE. In particular, the case studies highlight the connections these programs create between librarians, student affairs, and academic affairs. Practical suggestions for how librarians can initiate this type of experience on their campus as well as advice for how librarians can take a more active role in getting involved with already existing reading programs are provided.

This purposive study selected ten students of different background in order to understand how the educational success of adults was affected by Learning Activity Centers (LAC) in a community college. The ten selected students were all non-traditional students who had at least these three at-risk factors: (a) they scored below the college minimums on a diagnostic test in reading, writing, or mathematics, (b) they were below student financial aid guidelines, and (c) they had an interrupted educational history of two or more years. The ten students were paired into five categories: (a) Sudanese males, (b) Mexican females, (c) single parent …

Analyzing Traditional-Based Teaching Methods Versus Technology-Based Teaching Methods In Collegiate Aviation Classrooms, Robert Rhett Coleman Yates

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Technology use in the classroom is a major part of this transformation. However, this change in pedagogy is not occurring as rapid as one might believe. Out of ten undergraduate professors in the United States teaching in higher education, fewer than two seriously use computers and other technologies in their classrooms. Of the ten, four to five professors never use the machines at all. The same is true in collegiate aviation classrooms; technology-based teaching methods and …
