Developmental Education: Resilience And Academic Success In Rural Appalachian Students, Sandy Holbrook Jan 2016

Developmental Education: Resilience And Academic Success In Rural Appalachian Students, Sandy Holbrook

Online Theses and Dissertations

The need for developmental education is ever present in higher education as more students annually enter college underprepared for entry level college coursework. Underpreparedness is a pervasive concern in higher education. Community colleges in particular are the primary means of shepherding developmental education. Academic underpreparedness is just one of the many obstacles students face, however, when endeavoring to obtain a college education. Students often have additional challenges such as those frequently accompanying first-generation college status, rural status, low socioeconomic levels, low levels of self-efficacy, and the lack of resilience which can pose threats to their academic success. Student Perceptions Of Completing A Research Methods Course, Michael Kiener, Gina Oswald, Mya Vaughn, Katherine Kline, Bob Bertolino Oct 2015

Student Perceptions Of Completing A Research Methods Course, Michael Kiener, Gina Oswald, Mya Vaughn, Katherine Kline, Bob Bertolino

Human Services Faculty Publications

In rehabilitation counselor education there is a large emphasis directed toward students becoming reflective practitioners. However, minimal research is conducted in rehabilitation counseling on evidence based pedagogy to ensure students become effective and reflective practitioners. This study investigated the experiences of students enrolled in a research methods course and examined how instruction influenced (or did not) research value and utility. The findings suggest students moved from being outsiders of research, to research apprentices. Pedagogical suggestions are made to increase the value and utility of research in everyday practice.

Pre-Tenured Counselor Educators Engagement In Direct Counseling Service: Results Of A National Survey, Renae D. Reljic, Charles Vance Lindsey, Jake J. Protivnak

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

One hundred and fifty pre-tenured counselor education assistant professors participated in a survey regarding their engagement of direct counseling service (DCS). Both quantitative and qualitative data was analyzed. Participants reported significant restrictions on time and a lack of departmental support for DCS and a perception that DCS will not be valued within the tenure processes. However, the majority of pre-tenured faculty desired to engage in more DCS to maintain skills and enhance their teaching and scholarship. Data regarding the participation of DCS by pre-tenured faculty, and implications for counselor educators are shared.

The samples were drawn from a 10-year longitudinal study of youth with disabilities, the National Longitudinal Transition Study 2. The sample of the first study comprised 420 youth (all Ns rounded to nearest 10 to meet data restrictions) who had taken the direct assessment recorded in the dataset.
