Founded in 1871, the institution, which eventually became West Chester University (WCU) of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, transitioned in 1927 from a Normal School to a State Teachers College. In 1960, the institution introduced a liberal arts program, turning the one-time academy into a comprehensive college. Finally, in 1983, the institution attained university status. Located in the heart of Pennsylvania’s Brandywine Valley in Chester County, WCU sits 25 miles west of Philadelphia and 17 miles north of Wilmington, Delaware. WCU is a public, comprehensive institution offering undergraduate education and graduate programs. In fall 2024, the university enrolled …
Reflection In First-Year Honors Courses: Why We Can’T Take It For Granted, Kevin W. Dean, Zachary Wooten
Reflection In First-Year Honors Courses: Why We Can’T Take It For Granted, Kevin W. Dean, Zachary Wooten
National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters
Existing scholarship suggests that intentional reflection, during or shortly following an event, can impact future vocational choices and generate memories that participants can recall years after the undergraduate experience. Inspiring accounts of reflection, decades following honors City as Text experiences, demonstrate the influence that reflective experiences played in vocational formation (Daniel; Schock). Given the community focus of an honors FYS, studying the long-term impact of that experience on alums would be interesting.

Developing Peer Mentors As Co-Educators For The Honors First-Year Seminar, Kimberly Baldus, Gerianne Friedline, Ann Torrusio
National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters
Our decision at the University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL) to develop a peer mentor program in the Pierre Laclede Honors College (PLHC) First-year seminar (FYS) began in a spring 2014 campuswide FYS committee meeting. Having previously developed three essential cornerstones that all variations of the FYS on campus would need to include—campus connections, academic engagement, and development support—university leaders decided that best practices in FYS courses demanded the inclusion of peer mentors in all versions of the course. As honors faculty, we had frankly never contemplated this addition to our fully developed and successful academic FYS program. In fact, without …

The opaqueness of author naming and ordering, when coupled with power dynamics, can lead to a number of disadvantages in academic careers. In this commentary, we investigate gender differences in authorship experiences in a large prospective meta-analytic study (k = 46; n = 3,565; 12 countries). We find that women’s and men’s authorship experiences differ significantly with women reporting greater prevalence of problematic behaviors. We present seven actionable recommendations for improving the receipt and reporting of intellectual credit. Such actions are needed to ensure fairness in authorship, which is one of the most powerful factors in academics’ career outcomes.

While self-authorship theory posits that students who actively define and articulate their values and goals are better positioned for post-collegiate success, little has been done to examine curricular opportunities for self-authorship in the context of honors education. This case study explores the potential for self-authorship development within an honors capstone preparation course at a southwestern regional university. Author observes that such a course provides students with opportunities for self-authorship development and self-efficacy by offering provocative moments and granting autonomy for decision-making. Results suggest that the design and structure of honors capstones can support the growth and development of honors students …

Completion of an undergraduate thesis can be a transformational experience for honors students because they learn that they can contribute original intellectual thought to the record of scholarly knowledge. This essay considers how the misconceptions and challenges of an honors thesis can discourage students from undertaking the task. Authors describe the design, delivery, sequencing, resources, and administration of a junior-level thesis proposal course aimed at abating student anxiety over and supporting faculty engagement of thesis work. The Hopscotch Model, a tool to help novice researchers thoroughly design qualitative research studies while learning the philosophical underpinnings of a particular form of …

This essay presents the creation and maintenance of a campus meditation garden as an outgrowth of four successive philosophy classes in honors. The authors describe the garden’s inception, execution, curricular advantages, and administration, with specific examples of the impact on student health and well-being. The authors observe the ways in which honors students attained skills in transformational leadership by collaborating to develop projects and lead events, suggesting that a meditation garden may be appropriate for any learning environment emphasizing cooperation, creativity, mindfulness, and well-being.

Deceptive Recruitment Practices By Admissions, Francis Dugbartey
Graduate Student Work
This paper investigates the pervasive issue of deceptive recruitment practices employed by higher education institutions, with a particular focus on for-profit colleges. It explores how misleading advertising regarding job placement rates, tuition costs, financial aid, and institutional accreditation misguides prospective students, leading to financial hardship, unmet academic expectations, and erosion of trust in the higher education system. Through historical cases including Corinthian Colleges, the University of Phoenix, and Temple University’s Fox School of Business this study highlights the legal and ethical implications of such misconduct. It evaluates the regulatory responses by the U.S. Department of Education and the Federal Trade …

This interpretative phenomenological analysis study examined how adjunct instructors teaching online clinical counseling courses experienced gatekeeping in the context of the university system. The research question was: How do online, adjunct instructors teaching master’s level clinical counseling courses experience their university interactions as a part of gatekeeping? The participants described five experiential themes. These were: a) Balancing marginalization in the system with advocacy for the profession; b) Maneuvering through dependency on the system in gatekeeping; c) Finding consultation while navigating gatekeeping interactions; d) Managing the intensity of clinical courses; and e) Navigating the steep learning curve of learning how to …
Academic Preparedness And Institutional Support For Low-Income Students: A Scoping Review Of College Success And Retention, Davina Wilson
Academic Preparedness And Institutional Support For Low-Income Students: A Scoping Review Of College Success And Retention, Davina Wilson
Social Work Theses - Archive
Students from lower-funded high schools often enter college with lower levels of academic preparedness and limited access to advanced coursework, individualized advising, and extracurricular opportunities, all of which contribute to disparities in retention and academic success. These inequities, rooted in longstanding school funding gaps and systemic barriers, disproportionately affect first-generation and racially minoritized students, who may also experience cultural mismatch or isolation within college environments. This scoping review synthesizes existing research conducted by other scholars to examine how academic preparedness and institutional support services such as tutoring, mentoring, bridge programs, and college transition initiatives influence college readiness for students from …

More Than Money: Holistic Outcomes Of Catholic Higher Education, Jason King
Journal of Catholic Education
In an era dominated by financial metrics and return-on-investment rhetoric, this study offers a counternarrative by examining the holistic outcomes of Catholic higher education. Drawing on a nationally representative survey of 2,000 college graduates, it compares alumni of Catholic and secular institutions across three domains: life satisfaction and personal fulfillment; civic engagement and community involvement; and ethical development. The findings reveal that graduates of Catholic colleges report higher life satisfaction, greater civic participation, and a stronger ethical orientation than their secular peers—patterns that persist across demographic subgroups. While Catholic colleges perform well on traditional financial indicators, their distinctive value lies …

Beyond The Annual Review: How Feedback Environments Shape Student Affairs And Student Service Employees’ Feedback Receptivity, Lauren Zahour
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
Student Affairs and Student Service (SASS) professionals play a central role in student success outcomes and have direct organizational impact in higher education settings. As in other types of workplaces such as corporations, supervision and feedback are key elements of growth and development for SASS professionals. There is minimal research addressing how the supervisor feedback environment is connected to SASS employees’ feedback orientation, highlighting a need to explore these relationships to enhance supervision practices, feedback self-efficacy, and institutional effectiveness. The purpose of this quantitative study was to analyze the potential relationships between SASS employees’ perceived feedback environment and their own …

Uncertain Futures, Unfinished Journeys: The Complex Realities Of Belonging Among International College Women Of Color In The U.S., Matheeha Majeeth
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
This study explored the complex and personal lived experiences of International College Women of Color (ICWOC) as they navigated the complexities of developing of a sense of belonging within their U.S. higher education institution (HEI). Guided by Kimberlé Crenshaw’s theory of Intersectionality (1991,1989) and Strayhorn’s College Student Sense of Belonging theory (2012), this research study used an interpretive phenomenological approach to explore how racism, ethnocentrism and misogyny shaped the ICWOC participants’ academic and social journeys in their U.S. HEIs. Through individual, semi-structured interviews with the participants, this study revealed that belonging was not simply about institutional access or inclusion. It …

An Analysis Of Doctor Of Philosophy Time-To-Degree Predictors, Christian A. Decle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Doctoral-granting institutions invest time and resources to support the success of their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students. Despite these efforts, doctoral attrition rates remain high. One measure used to understand doctoral attrition and completion rates is time-to-degree (TTD). In 2020, the median TTD from the start of graduate school increased to 7.5 years (National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics [NCSES], 2020b), highlighting the need for continued analysis of factors affecting TTD. This study used data from the 2021 Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED; NCSES, 2021a) to provide a more recent analysis of the relationship between TTD and both student …
