On The Fence Of Legitimacy : A Framework For Understanding And Assessing The Legitimacy Of New Academic Disciplines In U.S. Higher Education, Karin Diann Bump

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Legitimacy is a concept frequently employed but rarely discussed in more than vague terms (Suchman1995, Hybels 1994). Consequently, this research seeks to develop a clearer understanding of the ways new disciplines become established within a sociological framework of legitimacy. Two theoretical models are used in this study through an approach that melds key aspects of each; the presence of three levels (Suchman 1995) and six sources (Boulding 1971) of legitimacy. Unique to Boulding's model is the purposeful inclusion of internal views of legitimacy as most discussions of legitimacy focus on external views.

Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine, Volume 25, Issue 01, published in 2009. The theme of this issue is Foodways. This issue explores the rich diversity of Appalachian food culture, tracing how Native American, European, and immigrant traditions have blended to shape the region's kitchens, farms, and tables. Articles examine local agriculture, foraging, home cooking, preservation methods, community meals, and restaurant traditions, alongside iconic foods such as cornbread, beans, pork, pepperoni rolls, and candy making. Participation And Determinants Of Physical Activity Amongst Irish 3rd Level Students., Jonathan Lerner Jan 2009

Participation And Determinants Of Physical Activity Amongst Irish 3rd Level Students., Jonathan Lerner

Theses

Currently, there is a dearth of research investigating physical activity patterns among Irish third level young adults (17-22 year olds). Both national and international research report that levels of physical activity decline in adolescence, this trend being most pronounced among females. Various biological, psychological, social, and environmental determinants have been found to influence physical activity; however, specific factors associated with the decline in activity during adolescence remain largely unknown. This research study examines participation and determinants of physical activity among Irish third level students.

A “National questionnaire” was administered to a sample of 532 students from Health Education Authority (HEA) …

The Application Of Bok’S Undergraduate Educational Framework In The Analysis And Acquisition Of Core Competencies Among Camp Adventure Youth Services Seasonal Staff, Bin Ruan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate the growth trajectory of college and/or university students in core competencies from entry to exit in the Camp Adventure™ Youth Services (CAYS) experience using the lens offered by Bok's framework. Specifically, students' growth patterns in core competencies were charted at three phases, namely, (1) baseline of their core competencies at entry level; (2) after receiving knowledge and practical training on the theory and implementation of CAYS' course but before its field experience; and (3) immediately after the CAYS' field experience. The core competencies included in the study were, according to Bok's framework, …
