Embedding Quizzes In On-Line Prerecorded Lectures, Joshua M. Polanski Jan 2021

Embedding Quizzes In On-Line Prerecorded Lectures, Joshua M. Polanski

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

As we transitioned to on-line education, the problem arises as to how to keep students engaged while listening to a prerecorded lecture. Listening to an hour to two hour lecture and watching a screen is not particularly engaging for the student. To this end, I embedded quizzes periodically within my prerecorded lectures of my DEN 7162 nutrition class for 1st year dental students that forced the students to engage with the lecture material.

The Emerging Science Of Wellness In The College Writing Curriculum, Peggy Suzuki Jan 2021

The Emerging Science Of Wellness In The College Writing Curriculum, Peggy Suzuki

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation argues that the college writing curriculum – and indeed any educational program---would benefit from an emphasis on human wellness and the arts. Wellness consists of one’s emotional, social, spiritual, physical, intellectual, and vocational well-being. Additionally, students’ environmental circumstances, like home life, finances, diet, exercise, and work obligations play a huge role in balancing personal health, especially in marginalized communities. Since one’s physiological and psychological connection impacts one’s identity and health, improving writing in the classroom requires holistic and creative approaches for rewiring individual thinking. I draw from positive psychology, where concepts like complex optimism and positive emotions nurture …

Interdisciplinary Thinking: Financial Literacy Crosses Disciplinary Boundaries, Marla A. Sole

Publications and Research

Financial literacy is ideally suited to be integrated into mathematics courses and taught in an interdisciplinary manner. Students learn best and are motivated when tackling real-world meaningful questions. This article shares how elementary mathematics was applied to better understand the debate about raising the minimum wage and the United States National Debt. To serve as a guide for other teachers who wish to incorporate financial literacy into their mathematics courses and take an interdisciplinary approach, this article suggests readings, data sets, and pedagogical practices. Students were engaged and enthusiastic to work on problems that challenged their thinking about financial issues.

A Party Platter Of Peer-Reviewed Oer Assignments, Elizabeth Jardine, Ece Aykol, Justin Rogers-Cooper

Publications and Research

Many colleges and universities have adopted core competencies during the last two decades. Their adoption reflects larger national trends in outcomes assessment, teaching and learning, and regional accreditation. Faculty at LaGuardia Community College sought model assignments with reflections on their design that speak to the college’s core competencies— integrative learning, inquiry and problem-solving, and global learning—and the communication abilities that students use to express them—written, oral, and digital communication abilities. In response, the college’s assessment leaders looked to the assignment library created by the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) for inspiration. They developed the Learning Matters Assignment Library, …

Strategies For Implementing Mindfulness And Mindful Eating Into Health And Fitness Professionals’ Practice, Gina B. Gonzalez

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Obesity is one of the most pressing public health issues in the United States (U.S.) today as it increases the risk of morbidity and mortality through chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and mental health conditions (1). Defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a body mass index greater than 30 kg·m−2, obesity is the second leading cause of preventable deaths (2). Projected estimates indicate that nearly one in two adults will have obesity and almost one in four adults will have severe obesity by 2030 (3). Further, existing disparities in obesity prevalence …
