A Framework For Justice-Centering Relationships And Understanding Impact In Higher Education Community Engagement, Melissa M. Quan
A Framework For Justice-Centering Relationships And Understanding Impact In Higher Education Community Engagement, Melissa M. Quan
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Community engagement in higher education has been promoted as critical to fulfilling higher education’s responsibility to the public good through teaching, learning, and knowledge generation. Reciprocity and mutual benefit are key principles of community engagement that connote a two-way exchange of knowledge and shared power and decision making. However, it is not clear, from existing literature, whether community engagement impacts communities in meaningful or positive ways.
The problem addressed through this study was how campus-community partnership stakeholders define impact. This was a study of how impact was determined; it was not an assessment of whether identified outcomes were achieved. Using …

Scaffolding High-Impact Practices For Asian Studies And The Environment, Brett Werner, Kyle Anderson, Matthew Klooster, Daniel Kirchner, Aaron Godlaski
Scaffolding High-Impact Practices For Asian Studies And The Environment, Brett Werner, Kyle Anderson, Matthew Klooster, Daniel Kirchner, Aaron Godlaski
Lewis Honors College Faculty Publications
Support from the Henry Luce Foundation allowed a team of Centre College faculty to develop multiple integrated programs connecting the study of Asia to the environment: the Centre Summer Language Institute (CSLI), the Asia & the Environment Lab (A&E Lab), January term courses abroad, student summer research and internships abroad, and student dissemination of research. Each of these high-impact practices (HIPs) alone has been empirically demonstrated to enrich student experiences, but when linked in succession through a scaffolded framework, student learning was synergistically magnified. The personal growth, academic interests, and career trajectory of students who completed all stages of the …

Out Of This World Club!, Alec Miller, Katherine Osmundson
Honors Program: Expanded Learning Clubs
The purpose of Out of this World Club! was to make STEM and space less scary and intimidating, and display that anyone, even elementary students, can have fun learning about space. Each week consisted of learning about different planets in our solar system, their characteristics, and how they are similar or different from one another. The activities centered around creating something tangible that is representative of space. For example, the students designed asteroids with a rock and paint, created constellations out of toothpicks and mini marshmallows, and designed small rockets powered by blowing through a straw. A principal goal of …

Application Of The Ideas Framework In Adapting A Web-Based Physical Activity Intervention For Young Adult College Students, Kimberly R. Hartson, Lindsay J. Della, Kristi King, Sam Liu, Paige N. Newquist, Ryan E. Rhodes
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
User-centered developmental processes are critical to ensuring acceptability of e-health behavioral interventions, and yet physical activity research continues to be inundated with top-down developmental approaches. The IDEAS (Integrate, Design, Assess, and Share) framework outlines a user-centered process for development of e-health interventions. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe the application of the IDEAS framework in adapting a web-based physical activity intervention for young adult college students. Steps 1–3 emphasized integrating insights from users and theory and Steps 4–7 focused on iterative and rapid design with user feedback. Data were collected via repeat qualitative interviews with young adult college …

Preliminary Study On Beetle Biodiversity And Its Role As A Metric For Ecosystem Heterogeneity In The Rowan County Area, Belinda Candra, Sara Monfalcone, Charles Lydeard, Sean O'Keefe
2021 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
Biodiversity is important for maintaining ecosystem function, including the adaptation of the organisms to reflect the change in the ecological community. Many ecological roles are performed by insects, including keystone organisms, ecosystem engineers and soil modifiers, part of the food chain, general symbionts, and pollinators, and creating a cumulative database of the variety of insect types allows for an effective overview of the different aspects of the environment from which samples are collected. With approximately 400,000 described species, beetles are immensely diverse in their lifestyles and ecological roles, thus making them valuable tools in environmental assessments of terrestrial and freshwater …
