All of the East Tennessee State University students who cross the commencement stage later this month will no doubt feel a range of emotions, from a deep sense of pride and excitement to reflective nostalgia and gratitude.
It will be especially meaningful for senior James “Jack” Smithey, an interior architecture major who already has a job lined up in Nashville.
On December 16, 2009 – 14 years to the day from ETSU’s commencement ceremony – he made a promise to his dad.
The pledge: He would attend and ultimately graduate from college.

Could Ernest Boyer’S Foundational Perspective Of The Scholarship Of Teaching Help Save Faculty Librarians?, Douglas Wayman
The Christian Librarian
This is a recovery project for Ernest Boyer's scholarship of teaching as presented in Scholarship Reconsidered. It addresses a reinterpretation of Boyer’s scholarship of teaching promulgated by his Carnegie successor, Lee Shulman and popularized throughout the Academy. Serendipitously, that reinterpretation gave birth to what is now known as the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), which has undoubtedly benefitted the Academy. While this project focuses on the reinterpretation's ramifications for tenure-track academic library faculty who teach, it also argues that the foundational interpretation of Boyer's model could benefit the Academy at large, and that the two interpretations are not mutually …

Academic Library Book Digitization And Contemplative Reading, Robin Phillips
The Christian Librarian
Since the beginning of this century, academic libraries have been at the forefront of book digitization and access. During this same period, many individuals have made the transition from reading printed materials to reading on screens. This change in reading habits has led to profound shifts in how libraries conceive their mission, how they structure their spaces, how they organize their resources, and where they allocate funds in their budgets. These changes have been reflected in the Library and Information Science literature, which now includes a rich corpus of research on the impact of digitization on librarians and library services. …

Internships are the strength of ETSU’s Applied Data Science grad program
It’s an age-old conundrum. Employers want to hire candidates with experience. But how do you get that experience without someone giving you a chance?
One way is internships, many of which are available to students in academic programs throughout East Tennessee State University. One of those is ETSU’s Applied Data Science Master’s Degree Program, where students are getting valuable experience from the hands-on work they’re doing with entities from local small businesses and government to internationally known companies.

Students of Color study abroad at rates lower than their white peers, thus missing out on the academic, personal, and intercultural benefits one can gain from studying abroad. The purpose of this thesis was to conduct a qualitative case study to examine how a study abroad program supports its Students of Color during the pre-departure phase of study abroad. This case study uses Critical Race Theory as its theoretical lens. Research for this case study included interviews with four study abroad practitioners from one study abroad program, and a review of the study abroad program’s online spaces. This thesis endeavored …

Students were interviewed about their learnings, feelings, and career hopes and choices. Combining High-Impact Practices To Facilitate Hope For Young Adults Transitioning Into College, Isabelle A. Jenkins, Alison Bryant Ludden, Michelle C. Sterk Barrett
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Today’s societal challenges are causing young people to feel less hopeful about the future, negatively impacting their mental health. Educators are called to address this crisis and provide opportunities for young people to experience hope. Jesuit colleges and universities are uniquely poised to do so given their focus on caring for the whole person and the recent release of the Universal Apostolic Preferences, which prioritize “journeying with youth in the creation of a hope-filled future.” High-impact practices at Jesuit institutions could particularly be effective given the ways in which they intellectually engage students and help students cultivate a sense of …

Imagination Grasping Reality: An Ignatian Foundation For Critical Hope In Jesuit Education, Susan Haarman
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
As public faith in higher education faces an all time low, the need for hope to both infuse and be a product of our institutions of higher learning is paramount. Rather than a simple hopeful optimism, Henry Giroux conceptualized critical hope - an educated hope that will form students capable and willing to view themselves and the world through a critical lens and then imagine new ways of proceeding that serve the public good and honor human dignity. Jesuit education, at its best, is rooted in expressions of critical hope with a world-affirming commitment to depth of thought and imagination …

Youth Identity And Postsecondary Decision Making In A Rural State: Evidence Of A College For All Master Narrative, Jayson Seaman, Cindy L. Hartman, Andrew D. Coppens, Erin H. Sharp, Sarah Jusseaume, Molly Donovan
Faculty Publications
This study examined the normative messages that inform youth postsecondary decision making in a predominantly rural state in the northeastern U.S., focusing on the institutionalization and circulation of identity master narratives. Using a multilevel, ecological approach to sampling, the study interviewed 33 key informants in positions of influence in educational, workforce, and quality of life domains. Narrative analysis yielded evidence of a predominant master narrative – College for All – that participants described as a prescriptive expectation that youth and families orient their postsecondary planning toward four-year, residential baccalaureate degree programs. Both general and domain-specific aspects of this master narrative …
