Collaborative Counseling: Using Course-Embedded Experiences To Train Skills And Foster Confidence, Jerry K. Hoepner, Erin D. Zigler-Miller

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Practicing speech-language pathologists and graduate students identify a need for counseling training but feel unprepared to implement counseling in everyday practice. Within speech-language pathology, there is a dearth of evidence about best teaching practices for counseling. The current investigation examines the collaborative counseling program, which involves hands-on training with authentic clients with communication disorders. Thirty-six students across two cohorts participated in this study. Students composed individual reflections after each collaborative counseling session. Each cohort also participated in oral debriefings after each session. Reflections and debriefing transcripts were analyzed qualitatively through open and axial coding via micro and macro analyses. Micro …

Addressing The Theory-Practice Gap Using Case-Based Learning And Imagined Roles In The Graduate Communication Disorders Classroom, Diane L. Laverty, Carol C. Thompson

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Code of Ethics (2023) requires all practitioners to uphold the welfare of others without discrimination. Graduate programs in communication sciences and disorders, therefore, must guide future clinicians to apply theoretical knowledge to clinical practice equitably and inclusively. This grounded theory study investigated how an instructor in a graduate communication sciences and disorders (CSD) class used case-based learning (CBL) to fill the theory-practice gap and guide students to think equitably and inclusively for future complex cases. Audio recordings from 12 hours of instructor-student discourse during one semester were transcribed and analyzed verbatim. Three interrelated, interactional themes …

Developing Active Listening In Csd Undergraduates: A Pilot Comparison Of Computer-Based Simulations And Immersive Virtual Reality, David M. Rehfeld, Payton Demeyer, Abby Kugler, Kristin Pelczarski

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Simulated learning experiences (SLEs) are becoming increasingly popular in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) training programs. This pilot study examines the relative effectiveness of delivering a SLE via standard computer or using virtual reality headsets for a more immersive learning experience. Seventy undergraduate CSD students were randomly assigned to complete the same SLE using one of these two modes of delivery to explore the technology’s effect on learning outcomes and self-confidence. Although no statistically significant difference in outcomes was observed, medium effects of intervention were observed on all outcomes, suggesting further is research is needed into the impact different technologies …

Csd Students Of Color Navigating The Graduate School Admissions Process: A Gauntlet, Marcella Cardoza Mccollum Feb 2025

Csd Students Of Color Navigating The Graduate School Admissions Process: A Gauntlet, Marcella Cardoza Mccollum

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Regardless of entry point, nearly all potential speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in the United States (US) share the experience of navigating the arduous application process for graduate school. For students of color, especially first-generation students, this application process can serve to cause them to question whether they belong in the field. This may be one of the key factors that manifests itself in the lack of diversity within the profession. This study followed nine undergraduate Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) students across nine months from application cycle through post-baccalaureate life as they shared their experiences about deciding whether to apply for …

"I'Ll Just Say It's Been A Racist Process": The Power Dynamics Within And Outside Diversity Requirement Classrooms At A Minority-Serving Institution, Kazusa Seko

Dissertations and Theses

U.S. higher educational institutions have increasingly implemented diversity requirements; however, institutional power dynamics during the implementation process and in a classroom after the implementation should be more highlighted. This study aims to understand the implementation of a diversity requirement during the implementation process and faculty and student experiences within required diversity courses at Portland State University (PSU) by analyzing one-on-one semi-structured interviews. PSU is a minority-serving educational institution that implemented a diversity requirement, the Race and Ethnic Studies Requirement (RESR), in Fall 2022. These data are analyzed through Critical Race Theory (CRT) lenses--introducing Okun's (2021) white supremacy culture in an …

Understanding Women Leaders’ Perceptions Of Compassion In Higher Education, Elle (Kelleen H.) Griffin Feb 2025

Understanding Women Leaders’ Perceptions Of Compassion In Higher Education, Elle (Kelleen H.) Griffin

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This qualitative research study was conducted to better understand women leaders’ perceptions of compassion in higher education. Specifically, what are the types of distressing events and the settings wherein a compassionate response was offered; what are the compassionate actions experienced or offered, and what might enhance or inhibit the process of compassion. The study was also conducted to examine if and how compassion enhances or influences learning (Knowles, 2011), growing and healing (Rogers, 1967), and thriving at work (McGregor, 1960). Kanov et al.’s (2017) process theory of compassion was used as the theoretical framework to gain insight into compassion in …

A Systematic Review Of Research On The Experiences Of Rural Black Men Attending Four-Year Institutions Within The Us Since 2002, Jarvis Marlow-Mccowin

The Rural Educator

This systematic literature review focuses on the experiences of rural Black men attending four-year colleges and universities within the US. The review addresses three research questions: How is rurality defined within the literature reviewed? What characteristics (e.g., identity dimensions) are included within the literature? What does the available research say about the experiences of rural Black students, mainly rural Black men, specific to factors explored and identified to foster success? These research questions were answered by reviewing literature published in academic journals from 2002–2023. Findings from the data collection, extraction, and analysis process are relevant to how rurality is discussed …

Support Needs For Registered Nurses To Bachelor Of Science In Nursing Students In Kenyan Universities, Gladys Mbuthia, Gisela H. Van Rensburg, Sheila Shaibu Feb 2025

Support Needs For Registered Nurses To Bachelor Of Science In Nursing Students In Kenyan Universities, Gladys Mbuthia, Gisela H. Van Rensburg, Sheila Shaibu

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Higher percentages of the registered nurses (RN) workforce with a bachelor's degree have been associated with better patient outcomes. RN with a diploma in nursing who are upgrading their qualifications to a bachelor's degree in nursing enter universities in Kenya as mature and part-time students. Studies have shown that mature and part-time students in universities have a higher attrition than their full-time peers. They are less likely to access extra support and personal development opportunities available at university, have a history of campus isolation, and fewer opportunities to engage with campus peers. The purpose of the study was to explore …

Advisor Satisfaction To Support Online Student Retention, Erica K. Whiddon Feb 2025

Advisor Satisfaction To Support Online Student Retention, Erica K. Whiddon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, the researcher explored the relationship between satisfaction with academic advising and online student retention. Online student retention is a critical issue in the context of increasing competition for students in higher education institutions. The specific problem was that online students have lower retention rates, and the reasons students typically select online degree programs are also the reasons they drop out of their degree programs. The purpose was to identify whether students’ reported satisfaction with their advisors mediated the relationship between the existence of external personal life factors and retention. A quantitative nonexperimental causal-comparative and correlational research design …

Faculty As Ambassadors Of Diversity Initiatives: Promoting Inclusive Pedagogy Through Innovative Professional Development Program And Community Of Practice, Hyunjin Jinna Kim, Rose Tirotta-Esposito, Luis Colón, Yi Zhang

International Journal of Transformative Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

The national and global demographic trends call for attention to advance efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in U.S. higher education. Incorporating DEI initiatives in higher education institutions (HEIs) is more important than ever as accelerated globalization increases student mobility. Implementing effective and inclusive pedagogical approaches in higher education classrooms is also more emphasized as meeting students’ diverse needs is proven to increase students’ engagement, achievement, retention, and even sense of belonging (Barnett, 2020; Kim et al., 2023a; Maguire et al., 2017). This brief paper presents preliminary findings of the data collected from a Faculty as Inclusive Teaching Ambassador …

“It Is Such A Hidden Curriculum Thing”: Graduate Students’ Perceptions Of Publishing, Christy Caldwell, Martha Stuit, Lucia Orlando

Journal of Graduate Librarianship

Becoming published authors presents a learning curve for graduate students. Publishing literacy is part of the hidden curriculum of graduate school because publishing is generally not taught consistently but more commonly through ad hoc conversations with advisors, advice from peers, and the occasional workshop. Our study surveyed graduate students at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) who had already published or were expecting to publish journal articles. Survey questions asked students about the publishing process, defined by us as the stage of the post-writing process when a manuscript is ready to publish. Our data demonstrate that publishing expectations are …
