Positive Education And Student Success In College: An Overview And Practical Implications, Lin L. Agler, Saurabh Gupta
Positive Education And Student Success In College: An Overview And Practical Implications, Lin L. Agler, Saurabh Gupta
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Institutions of higher education are facing a historically challenging time as student graduation and retention rates continue to be less than ideal, especially since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a critical time of transition for the competitive structure of higher learning, as finances, technology, student success, and institutional rankings all have a joint leading position in this structure. Applying concepts of positive psychology to higher education has been shown to be advantageous for student success and retention. This strengths-based approach helps institutions remain innovative and competitive. However, instructors face a great challenge in effectively applying positive psychology …

Nevada's Healthcare And Education Workforce Pipelines, David Damore, Caitlin J. Saladino, William E. Brown Jr.
Policy Briefs and Reports
With ongoing workforce shortages in K-12 education, healthcare, and mental and behavioral health—occupations central to the HEAL (health, education, administration, and literacy) economy—this brief utilizes the Nevada P-20 to Workforce Research Data System (NPWR) and data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to explore the current and projected landscape for these workforces in Nevada. Examining the demographic characteristics of those participating in focused career and technical education training and those earning relevant postsecondary credentials illuminates gender disparities in Nevada’s healthcare and education workforce pipelines. After reviewing the current state of these workforces and assessing the available NPWR data, we …

The Path Toward Spiritual Activism: Queer Latinx/A/O College Student (Muxerista) Activism As Sites Of Resistance, Hope, Joy, And Futurity, Roberto C. Orozco, J. Audra Williams
The Path Toward Spiritual Activism: Queer Latinx/A/O College Student (Muxerista) Activism As Sites Of Resistance, Hope, Joy, And Futurity, Roberto C. Orozco, J. Audra Williams
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
This study examined collaborators’ engagement in activism as sites of resistance, hope, joy, and futurity. We answer the following research question: In what ways do Muxeristas (Revilla, 2012), or queer Latinx/a/o college student activists, envision and act on kinship and liberation in their activism? We conceptualize our response to this question through Anzaldúa’s (2002, 2015) concept of spiritual activism. Our data analysis articulates three main components of a spiritual activism practice for Muxeristas (Revilla, 2012), which include: 1) engaging in forms of resistance through a queer and feminist world-making, 2) centering joy and love with and for each other as …
Creating The Polaris Initiative For First-Generation Undeclared Students, Jack Michaels
Creating The Polaris Initiative For First-Generation Undeclared Students, Jack Michaels
Masters Projects
First-generation undeclared students face compounded challenges in higher education, including lower sense of belonging, increased stress and anxiety, and higher attrition compared to their peers. While research has examined first-generation and undeclared students separately, little attention has been given to their intersecting identities. This paper provides a literature review of these students’ unique struggles and explores ways they may succeed throughout college. Living learning communities, first-year seminars, and interaction with faculty and academic advisors all have a positive impact on this student group. In response to the literature, The Polaris Initiative was created — a retention strategy for Grand Valley …

A Mixed-Methods Examination Of Interprofessional Preschool Virtual Simulations For Speech-Language Pathology And Occupational Therapy Graduate Students, Danika Pfeiffer, Ashley Lankford, Alexandra Durfee, Casey Branson
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Interprofessional education (IPE) is a required prerequisite of interprofessional practice (IPP), the most collaborative service delivery model for speech-language pathologists working in both health care and educational settings. This exploratory, mixed methods study was conducted to examine the impact of an experiential IPE training program on graduate speech-language pathology (SLP) and occupational therapy (OT) students working together in a preschool classroom for children with developmental disabilities. Eight SLP and five OT students participated in a 2-hour in-person workshop and two 1.5-hour virtual simulations using ViewPoint technology. The training program provided instruction related to: three of the Interprofessional Education Collaborative’s (IPEC) …

The Impact Of Year-Long Teaching Symposium On Faculty Implementation Of Evidence-Based Education Approaches, Julie A. Honaker, Joan Besing, Radhika Aravamudhan, Loretta Nunez
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
On May 17-28, 2021, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) launched a two-week teaching symposium on Foundational Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) science courses and innovation in teaching and learning: speech, language, and hearing sciences. Participants also joined asynchronous threaded discussions and a series of synchronous peer-based online discussions. Ninety-four participants completed a teaching symposium pre-assessment and two post-assessment surveys, and quantitative and qualitative results were reviewed across all time points. All 94 participants indicated motivation to use evidence-based strategies to improve teaching and students’ learning after participation, reinforcing the need for continued review and faculty engagement in these topics.
Exploring Metacognition And Mindset In Communication Sciences And Disorders Graduate Students, Kelly Rutherford
Exploring Metacognition And Mindset In Communication Sciences And Disorders Graduate Students, Kelly Rutherford
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Purpose: Embedding metacognition into higher education curricula can be particularly challenging in accredited communication sciences and disorders (CSD) graduate programs. Many faculty aim to promote both metacognitive development and a growth mindset among students. This pilot study explored the use of periodic "mindset check-in" surveys within a neurology course for speech-language pathology (SLP) students to examine changes in student attitudes and learning behaviors over time.
Method: This study examined metacognition and mindset in graduate CSD students through six surveys tracking attitudes, study habits, and mindset. Using varied question formats, data analysis summarized patterns and cohort growth over time.
Results: Students …
Comparing Massed And Distributed Course Formats: Effects On Outcomes In A Graduate Augmentative And Alternative Communication Course, Brandon Scott Eddy, Alli Sauerwein, Leah Meloy, Eric Sanders
Comparing Massed And Distributed Course Formats: Effects On Outcomes In A Graduate Augmentative And Alternative Communication Course, Brandon Scott Eddy, Alli Sauerwein, Leah Meloy, Eric Sanders
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
The effects of massed versus distributed learning have been well studied in the verbal and motor learning literature, with findings suggesting enhanced outcomes from distributing learning over time. However, some studies have found limited evidence to support enhanced outcomes from distributed learning when applied to an entire academic course. The effects of course scheduling on student learning in speech-language pathology graduate coursework have received limited attention. This study compared learning outcomes between a one-week massed format and an eight-week distributed format in an online two-credit augmentative and alternative communication graduate-level course. Learning outcomes were assessed before students enrolled, immediately after …

A Preliminary Survey Of Slp Students’ Language Sample Analysis Experiences, Rebecca Bawayan, Michelle H. Lenhart, Alexa Van Doren
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Purpose: Although practicing school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) report that most of their training in language sample analysis (LSA) comes during their educational program, SLP students’ experiences with LSA in their training program have not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to gather information on the LSA use, methods, and contexts in addition to perceived knowledge and skills of speech-language pathology undergraduate and graduate students.
Method: Undergraduate and graduate students studying speech-language pathology responded to an invitation to complete an online survey related to LSA knowledge and experiences.
Results: Results indicated that most students gain experience with LSA …

Are We Truly Diverse: Investigating The Diversity In Hospitality And Tourism Faculty Within The United States, Michael D. Caligiuri, Abigail Foster, Phillip M. Jolly, Miranda Kitterlin
ICHRIE Research Reports
Both practice and research within the hospitality and tourism field have grown increasingly concerned with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Yet while a significant and growing body of research has looked into the drivers and effects of representation in the workplace, very little has investigated the state of diversity in hospitality and tourism faculties. This is a serious oversight, as faculty diversity has been linked to a number of individual, organizational, and societal benefits. Drawing on an in-depth investigation of the racial/ethnic and gender makeup of 57 hospitality and tourism programs in the United States, our results indicate …
