Challenges And Opportunities In The World Of Tourism From The Point Of View Of Ecotourism, Fredy González Fonseca
Challenges And Opportunities In The World Of Tourism From The Point Of View Of Ecotourism, Fredy González Fonseca
Higher Learning Research Communications
This article emerges from the analysis of the data corresponding to the tourism activity in the world and in Mexico, considering: the arrival of tourists and international visitors, and the arrival of tourists in the North American region. Subsequently, it is intended to place ecotourism as an option for sustainable development, which helps generate additional income for local communities and contributes to the protection and conservation of natural resources. The analysis of global tourism in the above categories, in addition to the discussion about the criteria and characteristics of ecotourism versus sustainable development, allows us to visualize the potential that …
General Education: Learning From The Past, Preparing For The Future, Karen Gersten
General Education: Learning From The Past, Preparing For The Future, Karen Gersten
Higher Learning Research Communications
This article explores the widening gap between business and societal needs and current general education curricula. Research is presented that documents gaps between projected needs of industry and current practices in postsecondary education especially in the general education areas. Positive efforts to close the gap are highlighted. Also highlighted are changing regulatory environments, some that support forward-thinking approaches to liberal education and others that revert to traditional educational practices. With a focus on adaptability and intentional teaching and learning, recommendations are presented for flexible curriculum, intentional pedagogy, and a backwards approach to the teaching-learning enterprise that begins with authentic assessment …

Learning By Example: Standardized Testing In The Cases Of China, Korea, Japan, And Taiwan, Osman Ozturgut
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Kandel (1881–1965) is the most widely recognized leader and founder of modern comparative education. He asserted that the direction of education in democratic nations ought to be “borrowed and adjusted” within the cultural context of each nation. He further argued that, “so many of the problems in education are today common to most countries; in their solution certain common principles . . . are involved; the practical outcomes may, however, differ because of differences in tradition, in social and political principles, and in cultural standards”(Kandel, 1936, p. 401). As Kandel (1933) suggested, the problems and purposes of education have in …

Faculty And Student Perceptions Of Students' Sense Of Community In Online Courses, William C. Fiege
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
The Classroom Community Scale (Rovai, 2002b) was used to examine faculty and student perceptions of students' sense of community at two points during an academic semester. The study also examined the relationship between student sense of community scores and their final course grades. A non-experimental research design was used by the researcher to analyze pre-survey to post-survey score means of students' sense of community as perceived by students and faculty. Two hundred sixty-nine (269) students and 48 faculty members representing 56 online arts and science courses at a community college in Virginia completed the pre-survey and post-survey surveys.
Students' perceptions …

Writing To Learn: Can Reflection Journals Be Used To Promote Self-Reflection And Learning?, Duan Ning, Magdeleine Lew, Henk G. Schmidt
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate whether there is evidence of reflection in student-written journals and to investigate whether students show improvements in their reflective skills through journal keeping. To that end, the reflection journals of 3460 first-year students enrolled in a polytechnic were studied by means of an automated coding procedure. Data used in the analyses were students' journals for an entire week, collected once at the beginning and again at the end of an academic year. Outcomes of the content analyses suggest that there is evidence of reflection in students' journals and that students reflected …
