Jesuit Pedagogy's 'Missing Link', Alberto Núñez, Josep M. Lozano
Jesuit Pedagogy's 'Missing Link', Alberto Núñez, Josep M. Lozano
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Jesuit pedagogy has undergone a major renewal in the last fifty years. In this process, various inspirational formulations of its educational vision have been chosen. Despite maintaining a common language and spirituality, we have identified the risk that it is only lived out by a minority of people in Jesuit educational institutions. This paper proposes a re-reading of the Ratio Studiorum (RS) that offers a more precise and complete understanding of Jesuit pedagogy. This leads us to conclude that, in addition to other well-known features, it must involve the institutional governance model, a focus on an educative community that learns …
Perceived And Preferred Methods To Adult Language Learning, Suzie Tse
Perceived And Preferred Methods To Adult Language Learning, Suzie Tse
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research study is to understand the adult language learners in formal learning setting and know what do they perceive as the main methods of teaching and what do they prefer instead. If there is a gap between preferred methods of learning and perceived methods of learning, then there is a need that needs to be addressed. This is important because many students find language learning at best ineffective and at worst impossible. I hypothesize that there will be a difference between adult student perception and preference because student focuses more on speaking and listening skill over …
Stress And Coping Mechanisms Of Non-Traditional International Doctoral Students, Ndidi Patience Iwuagwu
Stress And Coping Mechanisms Of Non-Traditional International Doctoral Students, Ndidi Patience Iwuagwu
Theses and Dissertations
Higher education institutions are battling with the shrinking enrollment rate of students and the various college alternatives (Drozdowski, 2022); however, it has been evidenced in the literature that these issues can be augmented with international student enrollments and adult learners (Donaldson, 2022). Pursuing a doctoral degree is a tedious move (Devonport & Lane, 2014), and leaving one’s comfort zone to study in a different land for non-traditional international students can be exhausting due to the responsibilities at hand. Thus, this qualitative study examines the stressors experienced by non-traditional international doctoral students, the coping mechanisms utilized in the cause of these …

Transnational Higher Education And Quality Assurance : A Study Of 2+2 Student Learning Experience From Sino-Uk Cooperative Universities, Guoguo Ke
Lingnan Theses (Doctoral degree)
Background: The unavoidable effects of globalisation and increased competition amongst nations have fuelled students’ pursuit of international higher education. In response to this development, the adoption of transnational higher education has become a major global trend. For instance, the Chinese Ministry of Education (MoE) initiated Sino–foreign cooperative education in different forms to reform its education system whilst introducing high-quality educational resources from overseas. As one of the most popular forms, the articulation programme (2+2 programme) has attracted many students. Thus, the quality assurance of this programme warrants further exploration.
Aims and objectives of the study: The present study focuses on …

Rural Student Learning Experiences In An Online Composition Course At A 2-Year College, Dawn A. Goodwin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research has revealed that online writing instructors use a variety of instructional methods in class to improve student learning experiences. However, current research has not addressed rural students’ learning experiences with connectivism in an online composition course. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore what, if any, experiences rural students have with connectivism in an online composition course at a 2-year college. Siemens and Downes’s theory of connectivism was the conceptual framework for this study, which is a learning theory that has been applied to instructional strategies in online courses in the new digital era. A basic qualitative …

An Investigation Of The Personal And Professional Experiences Of J-1 Teacher Exchange Visitors In A Rural School District In South Carolina: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Abigail Althea Ralph
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This phenomenological study aimed to understand how the personal and professional experiences of J-1 teacher exchange visitors (J-1TEVs) in a rural school district (RSD) in South Carolina impacted their teacher self-efficacy. Personal and professional experience was generally defined as the circumstances surrounding J-1TEVs’ private and work lives. The theory guiding this study was the teacher self-efficacy theory, a derivative construct of Bandura’s social cognitive theory. The theoretical framework guided the exploration of how the personal and professional experiences of J-1TEVs impacted their beliefs in their ability to perform effectively in U. S. classrooms. The central research question was: “What are …

Ripple Of Hope: Understanding The Lived Experience And Academic Achievement Of Latinx Students At Arrupe College And Dougherty Family College: A Case Study, Richard P. Virgin
Ripple Of Hope: Understanding The Lived Experience And Academic Achievement Of Latinx Students At Arrupe College And Dougherty Family College: A Case Study, Richard P. Virgin
Dissertations
One of the most common and important entry points into higher education for Latinx and other underrepresented students is through community college. However, national completion rates for Latinx community college students have been trailing their white peers. This gap in academic achievement has prevailed since the 1990s. The trailing rates of degree completion for Latinx students can lead to lower lifetime salary earnings, lack of career advancement, greater risk of losing employment, and an increased chance of living in poverty. However, a successful community college model may be seen as a disruptor in the educational sector due to its much …

Locked-In Learning: Honorlock And Surveillance Capitalism In The First Year Writing Department, Tehyah Carver
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This paper explores the impact of implementing the proctoring software Honorlock in the collegiate writing classroom. Through a framework inspired by Shoshana Zuboff’s The Age of Surveillance Capitalism and Foucault’s Discipline and Punish, the investigation analyzes the efficacy of Honorlock’s attempts to reduce plagiarism and student test-taking anxiety when applied to preliminary writing assessments in Seton Hall University’s First Year Writing program. With professor interviews, surveys, and observations, the paper exposes the flaws of Honorlock’s promise of student empowerment and honesty by dissecting the punitive language used in their marketing material to potential and current consumers, administrators and professors. …
The Translingual College Classroom: Repurposing Essays For Inclusivity And Practicality, Maxwell P. Hayden
The Translingual College Classroom: Repurposing Essays For Inclusivity And Practicality, Maxwell P. Hayden
Honors Projects
This article adapts Peter Elbow’s framework for the teacherless writing classroom laid out in Writing Without Teachers for two purposes: first, to create a standardized means of measurement along new axes for use in writing rubrics and, second, to be more accommodating to nonformal English dialects. As writing pedagogy makes moves to be more understanding of the breadth of voices, typical rubric guidelines display an outdated understanding of the essay as a format. Elbow’s depiction of scholarly writing as an exploration of the self allows for a new grading paradigm to surface, one that reinforces academic English as a standard …

Transforming Feedback Practices Through The Use Of Screencast Video Feedback In L2 Writing Classrooms, Heon Jeon, Sarah Decapua
Journal of Response to Writing
Giving feedback to student writing is one of the writing teacher’s most important tasks in the classroom, and there are many forms of feedback that writing teachers can use such as written feedback, teacher-student conferencing, peer feedback or self-assessment. More than these options, the influx of technologies into writing classrooms provides teachers with the use of screencast video feedback when responding to student writing. In this article, two second language writing teachers questioned their feedback practices when responding to students’ texts and implemented feedback innovation by using screencast video feedback in their classrooms with the goal of exploring how their …

Navigating Epistemological Barriers For Inclusive Assessment: A Collaborative Self-Study, Yuankun Yao, Comfort M. Ateh
Education Faculty Publications
While inclusive pedagogy has been increasingly embraced in teacher education, inclusive assessment of student learning remains an area that has received limited attention. A critical friend (Ateh) from an outside institution encouraged Yao to examine how he approached inclusive assessment in a course on assessment strategies for preservice teachers. The collaborative self-study showed that his initial understanding of inclusivity was limited when he taught and practiced inclusive strategies in the assessment course. Yao’s reflections came upon moments of tensions as he navigated through barriers for conceptualizing and implementing inclusive assessment strategies. The weekly interactions with his critical friend, helped Yao …
The Race For Increasing College Costs, Mark Jayson Farol
The Race For Increasing College Costs, Mark Jayson Farol
Undergraduate Economics Working Paper Series
As higher education continues to shift to be more progressive, providing access to more students of different backgrounds, it currently is facing an obstacle. The escalating cost of tuition is growing to be a significant concern for access to higher education. The government has prioritized increasing federal financial aid to improve accessibility. However, this intervention may paradoxically worsen the rise of the cost of college, as suggested by William Bennett's famous hypothesis. As the higher education landscape evolves, a nuanced examination of tuition rise drivers is essential. This study utilizes cross-sectional data from the National Center for Education Statistics to …
From Classroom To College: The Impact Of Educators Of Color On Long-Term Commitment Of Students Of Color, Haley Hayes
From Classroom To College: The Impact Of Educators Of Color On Long-Term Commitment Of Students Of Color, Haley Hayes
Education | Master's Theses
Research has shown that educators of color are essential for students of color to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance in their early developmental stages of education. According to Morgan (2019), “the findings of a recent study supported the idea that assigning teachers of color the same race leads to an increase in positive subjective assessments with regard to behavior and skills” (p.158). Prior research has considered issues that prevent people of color from becoming educators and/or remaining in the field, while also considering the environment and tools needed for educators of color to be successful in their jobs. …
