Expanding "Standards" Through Embracing Diversity: The Clarinet Quintets Of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Joyce Solomon Moorman, And James Lee Iii, Lauren Miller

Dissertations

Diversity in music education has been a long-standing discussion amongst educators. This document advocates for the recognition and acceptance of the intrinsic and extrinsic values of diverse peoples and their musical contributions while creating tolerance and respect. The focus lies with three composers, two African American and one African English, in service of promoting inclusion for composers of minority groups within the clarinet repertoire.

The goal is to expand standard clarinet repertoire, with “standard” defined as compositions considered important in building a well-rounded clarinetist in America, to include works such as Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Quintet for Clarinet and Strings in F-sharp …

All Dissertations

This dissertation is an exploration of leader identity development and women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) college academic classrooms. While there continues to be research promoting diversity in STEM professions, women remain underrepresented in STEM disciplines, leadership positions, and for this specific study, the college academic classroom. This dissertation represents an opportunity for women in STEM college students to reflect on their experiences in STEM academic spaces and communities, while self-exploring factors that shape their leader identity development. The research utilized a basic qualitative research design to understand the participant’s authentic experiences within the academic environment. Conducting semi-structured …

Antecedents Of Business Students’ Acceptance Of Digital Learning Platforms Post Covid-19: An Empirical Study On Interactive Digital Learning System, Hossam A. Deraz Dr., Noha Ahmed Bendary Dr.

Business Administration

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, students worldwide are required to interact heavily with different digital learning platforms. In this case, it's important to investigate how the university students perceived and accepted these platforms. This study is guided by the technology model and the service quality model, aimed at investigating the relationship between quality variables, teaching team roles, and perceived usefulness in learners’ usage behavior of digital textbook learning systems. The study was conducted on digital learning platforms initiated in 2021 at the British University in Egypt. It employed a survey approach to explore the relationships between perceived usefulness, …

Exploring Early Childhood Teachers’ Experiences In Teaching Multilingual Children In Public Mainstream Schools In Tennessee, Maria Dias Aug 2024

Exploring Early Childhood Teachers’ Experiences In Teaching Multilingual Children In Public Mainstream Schools In Tennessee, Maria Dias

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study, grounded in a phenomenological perspective, delves into the lived experiences of early childhood teachers who teach multilingual children in mainstream classrooms in Tennessee. Amidst the rising number of multilingual learners in mainstream educational settings and the dearth of adequate teacher training to address their needs, this research illuminates the experiences of these teachers. Furthermore, it seeks to advocate for the integration of translanguaging pedagogy into teacher training programs and state policies. This study employed a qualitative study using the three-in-depth-interview series from a phenomenological perspective (Seidman, 2019). The first interview focused on participants’ overall teaching experiences and …

Sociomathematical Norms And Automated Proof Checking In Mathematical Education: Reflections And Experiences, Merlin Carl Jul 2024

Sociomathematical Norms And Automated Proof Checking In Mathematical Education: Reflections And Experiences, Merlin Carl

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

According to a widely held view, mathematical proofs are essentially (indications of) formal derivations, and thus in principle mechanically checkable (this view is defended, for example, by Azzouni [3]). This should in particular hold for the kind of simple proof exercises typically given to students of mathematics learning to write proofs. If that is so, then automated proof checking should be an attractive option for math education at the undergraduate level. An opposing view would be that mathematical proofs are social objects and that what constitutes a mathematical proof can thus not be separated from the social context in which …

Perceptions Of Using Multiple Measures For Student Placement At Rural Virginia Community Colleges, Whitney Bowling Jul 2024

Perceptions Of Using Multiple Measures For Student Placement At Rural Virginia Community Colleges, Whitney Bowling

Ed.D. Dissertations

Remedial courses have been part of the college landscape in the United States since at least the 1800s when nearly 250,000 students were placed into remedial courses. Traditionally, students who enrolled in remedial courses were placed into that course solely based on one test score. Students who enrolled in traditional remedial courses were more likely to not graduate than their peers placed into college-level English and Mathematics courses. This research aims to understand the rural Virginia community college English and mathematics professors’ perceptions of implementing and using multiple measures to place students into first-year English and mathematics courses. The data …

The role of higher educational institutions (HEI) in securing a sustainable future for all is not only limited to quality instruction but also includes development-focused research and need-based extension services. Pursuant to national and international commitment and policies, these three fundamental functions of HEIs are mandated to be aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals to intensify their roles in knowledge creation and commercialization while protecting the planet. The City of Dasmariñas, through the Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Dasmariñas (KLD) as its locally funded HEI, has taken initial steps to strengthen its sustainable governance through competitive research initiatives and extension …

U.S. Undergraduate Test-Optional Policies For International Applicants During The Covid Pandemic: An Exploration Of Admissions Webpages, Sugene Cho-Baker, Guangming Ling, José Sotelo, Olasumbo Oluwalana Jul 2024

U.S. Undergraduate Test-Optional Policies For International Applicants During The Covid Pandemic: An Exploration Of Admissions Webpages, Sugene Cho-Baker, Guangming Ling, José Sotelo, Olasumbo Oluwalana

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊

Although the adoption of test-optional policies (TOPs) has risen, there is little research documenting the types of TOPs (e.g., test-blind, test-optional) utilized across higher educational institutions, particularly for international applicants, who have been traditionally required to submit additional application components (e.g., proof of English language proficiency [ELP]). Using the content of undergraduate admissions webpages from 518 U.S. 4-year universities, the current study examined how standardized test policies are implemented in admissions for international applicants. We found that only 2.5% of the institutions explicitly required ACT/SAT scores, whereas 43.1% stated ACT/SAT scores as optional requirements for admissions. Some institutions provided unclear …
