Relationship-Rich Pedagogy: Cultivating Positive Classroom Experiences For Undergraduate And Graduate Students, Casey E. Humphrey, José Juan Gómez-Becerra, Susan Skees Hermes, Gaby Bedetti, Russell Carpenter
Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
Felten and Lambert’s (2020) relational pedagogy encourages faculty to create educational experiences that ensure every student experiences a genuine welcome and deep care; is inspired to learn; encounters a web of significant relationships; and explores questions of meaning and purpose. These principles promote student success at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. This essay will provide methods to incorporate Felten and Lambert’s relationship-rich strategies into courses ranging from general education to the graduate level.

Training University Tutors To Work With Bilingual Students, Sara Incera, Haleigh Hamilton, Angie J. Marroquin, Socorro Zaragoza, Trenia Napier, Lara Kristin Vance, Ashley Matthews Sweat, Judith L. Jenkins
Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
The purpose of this project was to train university tutors to improve their support of bilingual students (ESL/ELL students). We developed an evidence-based training session that emphasizes university connectedness and cultural inclusion. This one-hour training included background information, tutoring tips, and time for discussion. The majority of tutors (44 out of 47) reported learning something helpful they could use when tutoring. While this intervention was specifically designed to target bilingual students, most evidence-based tips discussed here are applicable to all students. It is crucial to provide tutors with the skills and resources necessary to better connect with their students.
Global Engineering Ethics: What? Why? How? And When?, Rockwell F. Clancy Iii, Qin Zhu
Global Engineering Ethics: What? Why? How? And When?, Rockwell F. Clancy Iii, Qin Zhu
Journal of International Engineering Education
Even though engineering programs, accreditation bodies, and multinational corporations have become increasingly interested in introducing global dimensions into professional engineering practice, little work in the existing literature provides an overview of questions fundamental to global engineering ethics, such as what global engineering ethics is, why it should be taught, how it should be taught, and when it should be introduced. This paper describes the what, why, how, and when of global engineering ethics – a form adopted from a 1996 article by Charles Harris, Michael Davis, Michael Pritchard, and Michael Rabins, which has influenced the development of engineering ethics for …
The Inter-Play Of Teacher Agency And Student Agency In Enhancing Graduate Employability: A Study Of The International Career-Oriented Programs In Vietnam, Thi Duc Phung
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
Although the Vietnamese government has launched numerous initiatives to develop employability for students, half of its university graduates are unable to find jobs in their area of specialization. In order to address this issue, the Vietnamese higher education sector has introduced international career-oriented programs (ICOPs) to position the quality of Vietnamese graduates on par with international standards. This research focuses on three ICOPs to explore the interaction between teacher and student agency in enhancing graduate employability. This research draws on Bourdieu's concepts of field, capital, and habitus to investigate how academics and students perceive and exercise their individual agency. The …

Worldview Diversity Education At Global Liberal Arts Campuses, Renee L. Bowling
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
In this emerging scholar summary, the author joins together scholarship on religion and culture and advocates for socially just education for religious understanding that is linked to global citizenship and diversity education. A comparative case study methodology that incorporates a survey and elite interviews is used to explore the manner and degree to which global liberal arts colleges and universities are engaging with religious diversity. Three axes are applied to analyze the ways education for religious understanding may function across place, space, and time within global education policy networks.

Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation explored how former Division I National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) women athletes made meaning of their undergraduate experience and how it influenced their post-graduate lives. The study research questions focused on three areas: a) how participants constructed meaning from their athletic experiences and what role those experiences had in shaping their identity; b) how the participants made sense of the various systems they experienced and what bearing various identities had on their meaning making; and c) what concrete knowledge, skills and qualities participants felt they possessed today that they attribute to their intercollegiate athletic experiences.
Three semi-structured interviews …

In The Driver’S Seat: A Practice-Based Inquiry Into The Compositional Role Of Electric Guitar Distortion In Heavy Metal Music, Timothy Hacquoil
In The Driver’S Seat: A Practice-Based Inquiry Into The Compositional Role Of Electric Guitar Distortion In Heavy Metal Music, Timothy Hacquoil
Postgraduate
This exegesis presents the findings of a practice-based research inquiry into the compositional role of electric guitar distortion in heavy metal music. Practice-based research places the practitioner-observer in a position to engage with knowledge and scope the ontological framework within my methods of practice. In response to the research question, I have produced ten original heavy metal compositions which provide evidence of a connection between distortion method and composition influence such as genre classification and instrument playability. The narrow scope of investigation facilitates observation of this composition-distortion relationship which is supported by audio visualisation tools and contributes to research in …

Examining The Politicization And Framing Of Hea 117 In The Us Between 2019 And 2021, Elise S. Ahn
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
In 2019, the U.S. Department of Education (DED) began increasing its enforcement of the Higher Education Act, Section 117 statute, which provides instructions for institutional reporting regarding foreign and contracts. The three questions guiding this article include: What were DED’s stated premises for the investigations? How was international engagement characterized in the notices? And finally, what traits, characteristics, and/or qualities were attributed to different actors? After providing an overview of Section 117, this article examines the notices of investigation issued by DED between 2019 and 2021 to better understand how the Agency discursively characterized malign and/or undue foreign influence utilizing …
Esl To Composition Transitions: Investigating The Differences In Disciplinary Values Among Two-Year College Faculty, Amy M. Flessert
Esl To Composition Transitions: Investigating The Differences In Disciplinary Values Among Two-Year College Faculty, Amy M. Flessert
English Theses & Dissertations
In this qualitative methods study, I draw on Paul Kei Matsuda’s 1999 article “Composition Studies and ESL Writing: A Disciplinary Division of Labor” to examine if, more than 20 years after its publication, there is still a significant disciplinary division between ESL writing and first-year college composition. I surveyed writing instructors from both ESL and ENG at Mid-Atlantic Community College (MACC) regarding what they value as “good” writing. I also worked with three faculty members – one in ENG, one in ESL, and a third who teaches in both departments, serving, in this study and the department, as a “bridge” …

At Home Or On Tour? Mixed Race Filipina/O American Reflections On Identity And Visiting The Motherland, Lisa Delacruz Combs, Marc P. Johnston-Guerrero
The Qualitative Report
This duoethnography (a dialogic approach to studying the meanings given to a similarly experienced phenomenon among two or more individuals; Norris, 2008) engages dilemmas of identity and authenticity for two mixed heritage Filipina/o Americans on various points in their ongoing journeys toward decolonization. We center our analysis around recent travels to the “motherland” of the Philippines, engaging two guiding questions: (a) What does it mean for us to claim Filipino-ness within the context of the Philippines when we are solely visiting? And (b) How is the dissonance of being in a different national context helpful for better understanding our relationships …

The Communication Discipline And Peace Education: A Valuable Intersection For Disrupting Violence In Communication Centers, Victoria Mcdermott, Cortney Smith, Amy R. May
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
Violence is a significant issue impacting the physical, mental, social, and economic health of our learning communities. For decades the discipline of peace education has explored the effects of nonphysical violence on students and educators, as well as ways to create more peaceful, less violent, and equitable educational practices. While communication frameworks have been used in peace education research, no research found has theorized the potential value of peace education for the communication discipline. Using the contextual background of communication centers, this piece seeks to disrupt steadfast norms and practices within communication centers from the perspective of peace education. We …

Sounds About White: Critiquing The Nca Standards For Public Speaking Competency, Adam Key
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
Using critical discourse analysis, I critically examined the National Communication Association’s (NCA) standards for public speaking competency to determine what type of ideal speaker the standards would produce. Highlighting NCA’s emphasis on “suitable” and “appropriate” forms of communication and the use of Standard American English, I argue that the ideal competent speaker in our classrooms sounds White. I complete the essay by reimagining the basic course using methods of Africana Study to explore ways that the standards for public speaking might be decolonized and made more inclusive to students of all backgrounds.

Joy And Hope On The Margins: The Mission Imperative Of Access To Catholic Higher Education, Patricia Mcguire

Introduction:
Words written in 1965 seem prophetic for today’s challenges to the human community:
“Never has the human race enjoyed such an abundance of wealth, resources and economic power, and yet a huge proportion of the world’s citizens are still tormented by hunger and poverty, while countless numbers suffer from total illiteracy. …political, social, economic, racial and ideological disputes still continue bitterly, and with them the peril of a war which would reduce everything to ashes.” (Gaudium et Spes #4)

Vatican Ii And Catholic Higher Education: Guest In Its Own House?, Massimo Faggioli
Vatican Ii And Catholic Higher Education: Guest In Its Own House?, Massimo Faggioli
Events
Introduction:
Almost exactly sixty years ago to the day, pope John XXIII opened Vatican II, the greatest religious event in the 20th century and an epoch-changing council like only Trent before, with a speech, Gaudet Mater Ecclesia, which single-handedly redirected the agenda of the council and arguably also the course of Church history. Even though Vatican II deserves to be celebrated, anniversaries often have the unstated purpose to administer symbolic sedation. So, this conference is not a celebratory moment, rather an opportunity to reflect on the state of the reception of the council especially in Catholic colleges and universities. In …

When Experts Become Novices: A Mixed-Methods Exploration Of International Scholars’ Experiences At A Us University, Masha Krsmanovic
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
The experiences of international scholars in the United States who are part of short-term or exchange programs remain vastly under-investigated compared to their full-time, tenure-track, and tenured peers. Guided by Blau’s (1964) social exchange theory, this study investigated professional and social experiences of exchange scholars at a large public research university in the southeast United States. A mixed-method exploration was conducted through surveys and interviews with international scholars who participated in an exchange program in the spring of 2020. The results revealed that exchange scholars were most satisfied with work conditions and their research experience, but least satisfied with professional …

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
Globalization has changed the landscape of higher education. The purpose of this study is to enhance understanding of how higher education leaders are engaging emerging questions about successful leadership, particularly when it comes to international student populations in times of crisis. Guided by the Intercultural Leadership framework, this comparative case study illuminates how university presidents from eight different countries were informed in their perceptions of international students and how they acted to support this vulnerable population. The results of this analysis highlight practical implications for higher education leaders to utilize when navigating global crises while protecting international student populations.

The Evolution Of Antiracist Pedagogical Work: Pushing Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion To Undermine Oppressive Structures In Our Communication Classrooms, Kristen P. Treinen
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
In this paper, I explore the evolution of antiracist pedagogy. This paper helps to answer for communication educators: How did antiracist pedagogy emerge? Why did antiracist pedagogy emerge? Who does antiracist pedagogy serve? Exploring the historical context of multiculturalism, critical pedagogy, critical multiculturalism, antiracist pedagogy, and Whiteness studies provides a broad range of theoretical perspectives on multiculturalism as well as the how and why antiracist pedagogy emerged as a site for study. After reading this essay, educators should understand the need to push DEI to include antiracist work in our research, classrooms, and educational initiatives with our future educators, graduate …
If You Build It, They Will Take It: Institutional Theft Of The Academic Work Of Black Faculty, Dejuanna Parker
If You Build It, They Will Take It: Institutional Theft Of The Academic Work Of Black Faculty, Dejuanna Parker
The Journal of Advancing Education Practice
This reflection piece described the perception of the lived experience of Black adjunct faculty and a program director of an inaugural Education Doctorate program. The essay recounts milestone moments of program development, administrative theft of the program, and the replacement of all Black inaugural faculty with lesser experienced White faculty who were unfamiliar with the philosophy and content of the program. A message of wisdom and a glimmer of hope is offered to Black faculty who find themselves in a similar context.

“We Can Position Ourselves As Experts”: Teachers Learning To Write And Publish On National Blogs, Henry "Cody" Miller, Gage Jeter
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
This article focuses on a collective case study of two teachers attending a professional development workshop focused on writing for publication via educational blogs. Through a qualitative study, we sought to understand how attending the workshop and publishing on a national organization's blog shaped the two teachers' own identities as teachers and shifted their thinking about blogs as a genre. We argue the two teachers had a shift in conceptualizing what counted as scholarship as well as problematizing who counted as a scholar. In an era of increased attacks on teachers' intellectualism and autonomy, we believe publishing on national blogs …
