“I’M Just Really Comfortable:” Learning At Home, Learning In Libraries, Mariana Regalado, Maura A. Smale

Publications and Research

While commuter students may use their college or university libraries, student centers, or other campus locations for academic work, as commuters they will likely also create and negotiate learning spaces in their homes. Our research with urban commuter undergraduates revealed that finding space for their academic work at home was difficult for many students whose needs collided with the needs of other residents using those locations for non-academic purposes. Understanding the details of students’ off-campus academic workspaces can inform the design of learning spaces in academic libraries.

The Year Of Change: Challenges Faced By First Year Students Based On Individual Identities, Holly K. Millet

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The first year of college is often a fresh start for students. For many, it is the first time away from home where students will have freedom to make their own decisions. During this year students gain new experiences, new knowledge, and a new understanding of themselves. However, it is commonly known that the transition into college is often accompanied by many challenges, including, homesickness, depression, inability to fit in, and financial instability. Often, students’ identities can influence the types of challenges they encounter throughout this transition. This study determines correlations between five social identities and challenges that first year …

The Great Divide: The Perceptions And Dynamics Of The Faculty And Staff Professional Relationship, Meredith L. Skaggs

Dissertations

The college community is built with several necessary components. When considering the faces of a college campus one visualizes the administration, faculty, staff, and students. Through these roles, each serves a function impacting the mission of the institution. Utilizing qualitative methods of interviews, observations, and document analysis this study examined the dynamics and interactions of two roles on a community college campus. The research sought to understand the perceptions of faculty and staff regarding one another and the ultimate impact on the community college campus culture. A New Perspective On Underrepresented Student Completion: Self-Efficacy Beliefs Of Successfully Completed Underrepresented Students, Diana Alexandra Lourdes May 2015

A New Perspective On Underrepresented Student Completion: Self-Efficacy Beliefs Of Successfully Completed Underrepresented Students, Diana Alexandra Lourdes

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The student populations most at risk of non-completion are those who identify as low-income, first-generation, and Black or Hispanic, also known as underrepresented students. For years, the existing literature has primarily focused on why underrepresented students are less likely to graduate than their counterparts (Choy, 2000; Engle & Tinto, 2008; Ishitani, 2006; Pike & Kuh, 2005; Soria & Stebleton, 2012). Harper (2012) emphasizes that to increase the educational attainment of certain underrepresented groups, there must be a counter balance of research focusing on insights from students who were successful rather than the popular one-sided emphasis on attrition and failure. The …
