Table Discussion Notes - Balancing Academic Depth And Breadth, Portland State University

Winter Symposium

Notes from the table discussion on the topic of balancing academic depth and breadth.

A large part of discussion focused on how we should define breadth for our student body, the financial and societal contexts that can make breadth a difficult sell to students, and the importance of making the curriculum relevant to our students’ needs and experiences. In terms of academic content, discussion was fairly general, noting the value of balancing knowledge with skills, and providing content related to life, citizenship and career. Quite a bit of discussion explored ways to structure the curriculum and design pedagogy to meet …

“From Whence Cometh My Help?” Exploring Black Doctoral Student Persistence, Melanie Acosta, Shaunte Duggins, Thomas E. Moore, Thomasenia Adams, Bridgette Johnson Jan 2016

“From Whence Cometh My Help?” Exploring Black Doctoral Student Persistence, Melanie Acosta, Shaunte Duggins, Thomas E. Moore, Thomasenia Adams, Bridgette Johnson

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

In previous decades, the bulk of research focused on Blacks in doctoral programs highlight issues of recruitment and access with little attention given to the racialized experiences or perspectives of African descent scholars-in-training. More recently, a growing body of research has used qualitative methods to dismantle the myth of a colorblind doctoral student experience. Instead these scholars illuminate the ways in which race and racism create challenges for Black doctoral students. The present study adds to this literature by revealing the ways that Black doctoral students persist amid this highly racialized context. Researchers employ critical race theory and qualitative focus …

Challenges For Global Learners: A Qualitative Study Of The Concerns And Difficulties Of International Students, Chetanath Gautam, Charles L. Lowery, Chance Mays, Dayan Durant

Student Publications

The authors in this study seek to inform academia about international students’ experiences and challenges while attending universities in Small Town USA. Despite their eagerness to study in the United States (U.S.), international students are faced with setbacks that many universities fail to recognize or realize. The researchers conducted in-depth interviews with a purposive sample of students using questions based on information from the literature and an initial survey. The themes that emerged from the data analysis were language, jobs/finances, transportation, assimilation, religious interactions, and identity. Findings emphasize the imperative to understand the challenges these students face as they continue …

Comparing Quality: The Quality Assurance And Enhancement Report For England And Northern Ireland And The Ontario Quality Assurance Framework, Daniel Lang

System and Institutional Design and Transformation

This is a comparative study of two reports on the assurance of quality in higher education that appeared contemporaneously in 2008. One was the result of a joint working group of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, the Higher Education Academy, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England. The other was the result of a task force of the Council of Ontario Universities and the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies. Both groups had the endorsement of government. Both groups began with extensive surveys of institutional opinion about existing quality assurance and enhancement regimes. Using NVivo software, documentary analysis, …

Critical Skills And Critical Pedagogy In An Era Of "Permanent Crisis" In Postsecondary Education Howard A. Doughty, Howard A. Doughty Jan 2016

Critical Skills And Critical Pedagogy In An Era Of "Permanent Crisis" In Postsecondary Education Howard A. Doughty, Howard A. Doughty

Outcomes in Higher Education

"Critical thinking," is widely celebrated as a "soft" employability skill, like the communications and human relations capabilities deemed essential for work in the precarious twenty-first- century. We are told it enhances problem-solving skills and contributes to employee flexibility in the competitive global economy. Intellectually, critical thinking derives from the European Enlightenment. It favours the “scientific method,” strives for conceptual clarity and evidence- based statements. It eschews “bias” in all its forms. It opposes metaphysics and historicism, is critical of sentimental romanticism and authoritarian demagoguery, and seeks to purge “ideology” from public discourse. “Critical pedagogy” also criticizes ideology, but differently. It …

Tradition With A Capital "T": The Value Of Campus Traditions, Morgan K. Morris Jan 2016

Tradition With A Capital "T": The Value Of Campus Traditions, Morgan K. Morris

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

This study explored the value of campus traditions in higher education. Literature regarding tradition and campus traditions has answered the question “what is tradition?”, analyzed the emphasis on tradition in the Southern United States, and investigated the role of tradition in higher education. This original research sought to survey student, personnel, and general perceptions of the value of campus traditions in higher education through a qualitative, phenomenological approach focused on a single campus tradition. In order to obtain a holistic perspective, the researcher conducted a review of archival resources and interviews with students, faculty, staff, and administrators connected to the …

A Study Of The Fepac Accredited Graduate Forensic Science Programs' Curricula, Catherine Genice Rushton Jan 2016

A Study Of The Fepac Accredited Graduate Forensic Science Programs' Curricula, Catherine Genice Rushton

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The National Institute of Justice (1999) and the National Academy of Sciences (2009) recommended that forensic science training shift from on-the-job training to formal education. However, the reports cited inconsistencies in the curricula of the forensic science degree programs as an impediment to this. The Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC) Standards were created to address this issue; however, no studies have been conducted to determine how the accreditation standards have been implemented by the FEPAC accredited graduate programs. This study evaluated the self-study responses (n=11) and website information (n=17) specific to FEPAC’s Graduate Curriculum Standards to determine how …
