Creating A Foundation Of Well-Being For Teachers And Students Starts With Sel Curriculum In Teacher Education Programs, Deirdre Katz, Julia Mahfouz, Sue Romas
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
During the COVID-19 crisis, it has become clear how unprepared our educational systems are to provide social and emotional support through distance learning. Despite the demands for teachers to support the social and emotional development of their students, our universities are behind the curve in providing coursework to develop their knowledge and skills in these areas. This paper calls us to imagine teacher education with Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) as a cornerstone in teacher preparation programs. We outline the importance of SEL curriculum in preservice education and suggest a multifaceted approach to teacher preparation.

Rethinking The Study Of College Student Suicide: Critical Suicidology And Higher Education, Lisa S. Kaler
Rethinking The Study Of College Student Suicide: Critical Suicidology And Higher Education, Lisa S. Kaler
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
This paper introduces Critical Suicidology to higher education, exploring how this perspective can help understand and prevent college student suicide. Critical Suicidology critiques the creation of truth and knowledge in the study of suicide and demonstrates that suicide has been socially constructed. Assumptions within extant literature limit our understanding of suicide and preclude critical examination into the role of higher education on suicidal thoughts among college students, particularly those from marginalized populations. This paper argues that higher education scholars’ contextual knowledge of the student experience can engender critical studies that explore college student suicide within the context of higher education, …

Accidental Information Literacy Instruction: The Work A Link Landing Page Can Do, Elizabeth Pickard, Michelle R. Desilets
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Innovative Pedagogy (2018-2020 archives)
This article reports on a surprise finding from a larger, long-term study that explores ways to provide effective information literacy instruction (ILI) in asynchronous, online-only courses. The finding occurred during a term in which students participating in the study received no formal ILI. However, these students did not turn to the web at large when doing independent research as some literature might predict. Instead, analysis of their final research project bibliographies suggests students modeled the search scopes of select prior assignments from that same course. This finding has potential to inform parameters for adapting pedagogy for asynchronous, online-only instruction as …

Making Methods Relevant: Undergraduate Research Methods And The Content Analysis Project, Kevin E. Courtright, David A. Mackey
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Innovative Pedagogy (2018-2020 archives)
Teachers of undergraduate research methods classes may struggle at times to keep their courses engaging and to have students view the material as relevant to the occupations they will soon enter. This article discusses a content analysis assignment and how it offers a way for students to demonstrate critical thinking and acquire data analysis skills. Through the use of multiple high-impact learning practices, the assignment requires students, individually or in a group, to identify data appropriate for content analysis and then, with faculty guidance, develop research questions, manage the data, conceptualize and operationalize themes, perform content analysis, draw conclusions from …

ETSU News
De’Kliah Kelly, a sophomore from Chattanooga, is an Honors-in-Discipline in History student with a second major in anthropology. Kelly applied to a number of schools, but the tipping points that led her to choose ETSU were its classical studies minor and its Summer Bridge Program, which provides incoming African American, Hispanic and Native American students a solid foundation before they start their freshman year. After taking advantage of tutoring services provided through TRIO Programs at ETSU, as well as earning the 2020 Tennessee TRIO Adult-Learner Academic Scholarship, she now serves fellow students as a tutor herself. She is also a …

Contentment Or Torment? An Analytic Autoethnography Of Publication Aptitude In Doctor Of Philosophy, Atiqur Sm-Rahman, Yasmin Jahan
The Qualitative Report
The burgeoning trend of pursuing publication in a leading journal, as a benchmark of standard doctoral research, has become an appealing expectation of early-stage doctoral researchers (ESDR). However, recent pedagogical studies showed limited attention to exploring the dynamic relations between doctoral education and the academic publication process. Our aim was to investigate and understand (if and) how this intricately intertwined relation contributes to the scholarly publication practice in doctoral education from an individual and institutional context. We used a duo-analytic autoethnography approach and presented a comprehensive narrative based on the authors’ self-reflections by using a range of data sources namely …

Fertility Awareness And Parenting Intentions Among Mexican Undergraduate And Graduate University Students, J. M. Place, Brennan D. Peterson, B. Horton, M. Sanchez
Marriage and Family Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
An online, cross-sectional survey was carried out between November 2017 and January 2018 to assess fertility awareness among students attending the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City. A total of 371 students participated in the survey (n = 228 females, 143 males). 75% of females and 74% of males believed a woman’s fertility begins to decline markedly after age 40. Over 75% of all participants overestimated the probability of couples having a live birth after undergoing one cycle of IVF. With regard to parenting intentions, only 48% of females wished to have children compared to 59% …

Designing Analog Learning Games: Genre Affordances, Limitations And Multi-Game Approaches, Owen Gottlieb, Ian Schreiber
Designing Analog Learning Games: Genre Affordances, Limitations And Multi-Game Approaches, Owen Gottlieb, Ian Schreiber
Articles
This chapter explores what the authors discovered about analog games and game design during the many iterative processes that have led to the Lost & Found series, and how they found certain constraints and affordances (that which an artifact assists, promotes or allows) provided by the boardgame genre. Some findings were counter-intuitive. What choices would allow for the modeling of complex systems, such as legal and economic systems? What choices would allow for gameplay within the time of a class-period? What mechanics could promote discussions of tradeoff decisions? If players are expending too much cognition on arithmetic strategizing, could that …
