An Exploration Of The Formal Agricultural Education System In Trinidad And Tobago, Nathan W. Conner, Christopher T. Stripling, Jessica Blythe, Aaron Giorgi, Eric D. Rubenstein, Angel Futrell, Jenny Jenkins, T Grady Roberts
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
A team of nine researchers from the United States spent 10 days exploring the formal agricultural education system in Trinidad and Tobago from primary education through postgraduate education. Data were collected from interviews and observations from students, teachers/instructors, and agricultural producers. The team concluded that (a) the people in Trinidad and Tobago involved in agriculture (teachers, students, and producers) are passionate about agriculture, but believe that the general public demeans agricultural workers and work; (b) Trinidad and Tobago has the capacity to develop a well-trained workforce through a comprehensive agricultural education system that spans from primary education to doctoral instruction, …
“To See How Far I Can Go”: Benefits Of “Fun” In Encouraging Civic Engagement And Building Self-Efficacy Among New York Community College Students, Paul Naish
Publications and Research
Community Days, an innovative initiative to foster community service and civic engagement at the City University of New York’s new Guttman Community College, encourages students to perform volunteer work around the city. What makes the program unique are opportunities for students to take self-directed excursions and enjoy free resources in the city—activities not usually associated with service-learning. Including a component that the students identify as “Fun Day” in a program dedicated to volunteer service strengthens the program and increases the enthusiasm of the participants. This essay examines reflections completed by the students after participating in Community Days, considering their initial …

Living In Hogwarts: The Experience Of A Dean Of Honors And His Wife While Living In An Honors Residence Hall, Keith Garbutt, Christine Garbutt
National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters
On Friday, May 17, 2013, we watched the class of 2013 Honors Scholars at West Virginia University (WVU) enter the Honors Convocation to the sound of Non Nobis Domine. While certainly not our first Honors Scholars graduation since Keith had been running honors at WVU, it was nonetheless special. This cohort of graduates was the first freshman class to live in the specially built residence hall that houses the honors college administrative offices, each new freshman class of the honors college, and an apartment for faculty living in-residence.

The Tap: An Examination Of The Controversy Of Secret Societies On College Campuses, Mackenzie Crane
The Tap: An Examination Of The Controversy Of Secret Societies On College Campuses, Mackenzie Crane
Theses and Dissertations
Secret societies on college campuses have enjoyed prestige and influence since the founding of Phi Beta Kappa in 1776. Some, like Skull and Bones at Yale University, appear to do their members a great service by connecting them to a network of successful alumni. Others, like the Machine at the University of Alabama, have been accused of crime and discrimination. This study serves to examine what impact these groups have on their members and the surrounding community. It also explores the concept of formalized secrecy within the democratic realm of higher education. This is achieved through historical study of three …

New Vistas In Science Education, K. Waite, B. Healy
New Vistas In Science Education, K. Waite, B. Healy
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
In the summer of 2012, a colleague and I attended the four-week Virginia Initiative for Science Teaching and Achievement (VISTA) Elementary Summer Science Institute where we were trained to conduct inquiry-based science teaching in a problem-based learning setting. We then implemented our training in our own academic classrooms by developing a Problem-Based Learning unit meeting the objectives of our Virginia standards-based science curriculum and selecting a topic with tics to our local community. Toward demonstrating that students, teachers, and educational systems stand to benefit from the implementation of this methodology, this article clarifies the following aspects: 1) outlines the problem, …
Creative Writing Pedagogy: The Autobiographical Narrative In Hybrid Projects As A Means To Explore Intersectionality, Tana G. Young
Creative Writing Pedagogy: The Autobiographical Narrative In Hybrid Projects As A Means To Explore Intersectionality, Tana G. Young
Masters Theses
My thesis addresses the role of creative writing methods in fostering close observation, attention to detail, critical thinking and a keener awareness of intersectionalities in writing classrooms across disciplines, but most especially the humanities and social sciences. I contend that the "real work" of the academy is critical thinking. Further, using creative writing, specifically autobiographical narrative in FYC, anticipates multimodal projects and digital storytelling, all of which fosters creative and critical thinking.

‘We Did The How To Teach It’: Music Teaching And Learning In Higher Education In Australia, Dawn Joseph
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The Australian Government recognizes that the Arts are a critical part of formal school education and it should not be viewed as subordinate or extra. This paper forms part of a wider research project titled “Pre-service teacher attitudes and understandings of Music Education” that started in 2013. The focus of this paper investigates music teaching and learning in a core unit within the Bachelor of Education (Primary) course at Deakin University (Australia). Using questionnaire and interview data gathered in 2014, I employ Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to analyse and codify the data. Three themes are discussed in relation to: Why it …

International Students’ Experience Of Practicum In Teacher Education: An Exploration Through Internationalisation And Professional Socialisation, Georgina M. Barton, Kay A. Hartwig, Melissa Cain
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper explores the practicum experience of international students studying in a teacher education course. Much research has investigated the experience of international students during their degree experience but there is limited research that has addressed the practicum; a key component of teacher education. The research that does exist tends to view international students as analogous rather than individual students with distinct needs and experiences. The current paper will draw evidence from fourteen (14) international students gathered via interviews. The themes of learning and teaching contexts and relationships; curriculum, pedagogy and assessment; and personal attributes were identified and the conceptual …

Edad 890: Diversity And Equity In P-20 Educational Organizations—A Peer Review Of Teaching Project Benchmark Portfolio, Shavonna Holman
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
As a brand new faculty member to the university system and to higher education, I was given the opportunity to develop and teach a brand new course entitled: Diversity and Equity in P-20 Educational Organizations. With this course only being taught a total of three times, each by me, I was unsure if I systematically explored what students were actually getting from the course in connection to the lessons being taught and the assigned activities.
In creating this portfolio, my goals were to improve my teaching in terms of creating a stronger relationship between the things I wanted my students …

Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine
Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine, Volume 30, Issue 02, published in 2015. The theme of this issue is The Best of 30 Years, Part I. This issue presents the first part of a retrospective collection, drawing from selected works published between 1984 and 1999 to revisit major themes in Appalachian studies. It brings together essays, interviews, and narratives that reflect on topics such as health, place, and cultural tradition, community leadership, labor activism, media, religion, and humor, illustrating the breadth of concerns that have shaped the magazine's earlier volumes. The selections emphasize lived experience, storytelling, and regional identity, …
