The Case For Urgency: Advocating For Indigenous Voice In Education, Kevin P. Gillan, Suzanne Mellor, Jacynta Krakouer

Australian Education Review

In 2004 the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) published an Australian Education Review (AER) on Indigenous Education: The Case for Change: A review of contemporary research on Indigenous education outcomes, AER 47 (Mellor & Corrigan, 2004). In the 13 years since its publication, the state of Indigenous education outcomes has remained substantially unaltered. All the social indicators demonstrate that Australia’s First Nations people continue to be the most socio-economically disadvantaged population cohort in Australian society. This is after decades of continued policy efforts by successive Commonwealth, state and territory governments to ameliorate Indigenous education disadvantage. We still struggle with …

The Challenges Of Living With A Roommate: The Impact On Students With Disabilities' Residential Experience, Ashley Marie Payne

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the challenges that students with disabilities face while living with a roommate. These were explored to determine the impact those challenges have on their experience living on campus. Students with disabilities come to college with a unique set of challenges from their disability and navigating living with a roommate can add to the difficulty of their collegiate experience. A survey was adapted from a study on living with a roommate and a study on the supports for college students with disabilities. This survey gathered information on the student's class year, their experience …

College Presidents Mostly White And Aging, Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

Despite the fact that the leadership of colleges and universities in this country is in dire need of fresh ideas, a report released last week by the American Council on Education (ACE) shows that the people in these positions continue to be largely white, male – and getting older. And while women represent the majority of undergraduate and graduate students in this country and that the number of minorities attending colleges and universities keeps growing and will continue to grow in the years to come, by 2016 less than a third of college presidents were women and less than a …

The Relationship Between Mindfulness And Stress Among College Students, Elizabeth Marie Vonderheyde Jun 2017

The Relationship Between Mindfulness And Stress Among College Students, Elizabeth Marie Vonderheyde

Theses and Dissertations

College students who have high levels of stress have reported difficulties with functioning on a daily basis, whether it be high anxiety due to classes or an increase in unhealthy habits like smoking or overeating. Studies have shown that those who practice mindfulness every day learn how to live with accepting the stresses in their lives (Siegel & Allison, 2016). This study explored the relationship between mindfulness and stress in college students from a medium size public university in the northeast. Two self-report measures were used to collect data though an online survey. Data were subjected to descriptive and inferential …

Cultivating Mathematical Affections Through Engagement In Service-Learning, Josh Wilkerson Jun 2017

Cultivating Mathematical Affections Through Engagement In Service-Learning, Josh Wilkerson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2017

Why should students value mathematics? While extensive research exists on developing the cognitive ability of students, very little research has examined how to cultivate the affections of students for mathematics. The phrase "mathematical affections" is a play on the affective domain of learning as well as on the general notion of care towards something. Mathematical affections are more than a respect for the utility of the subject; the term is much broader and includes aesthetic features as well as habits of mind and attitude. This paper will analyze the findings from a research project exploring the impact of service

Reading Journals: Preview Assignments That Promote Student Engagement, Productive Struggle, And Ultimate Success In Undergraduate Mathematics Courses, Sarah Nelson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2017

We spend lots of time searching for the best textbook for students. We want our students to have a reliable and useful resource to reference, as needed. We even ask them to read over certain material before classes. Often, however, we fail to guide our students in how to read the text productively. Incorporating reading journals into your classes is an excellent way to simultaneously develop your students' ability to read mathematical text and capitalize on what the students already have to offer. In this presentation, we will look at how reading journals motivate students in a variety of mathematics …

The Daily Question: Building Student Trust And Interest In Undergraduate Introductory Probability And Statistics Courses, Matthew A. Hawks Jun 2017

The Daily Question: Building Student Trust And Interest In Undergraduate Introductory Probability And Statistics Courses, Matthew A. Hawks

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2017

Introducing probability or statistics to disinterested undergraduate students is challenging. Adding faith in such a classroom at a secular institution only increases the complexity. We share an unobtrusive way to build trust with students, creating a medium to both naturally share your faith and have your students look forward to attending each class. The context is the United States Naval Academy, a four-year undergraduate institution with an emphasis on leader development. In addition to a calculus sequence, Humanities majors enroll in Probability with Naval Applications or Introductory Statistics. These sophomores or juniors are split between those who have no intention …
