Psychological Research In Action: Mentoring At An Urban Hsi Institution With Intersectional Perspectives And Outcomes, Pa Her, Jean E. Hillstrom, Amanda Almond

Publications and Research

This paper is from the perspective of three women who are psychology faculty members at various points in their professional development. It was written with the intention to promote ways for students and faculty members of color to construct representations of themselves as mentors. The New York City College of Technology’s (City Tech) participation in National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institute of Health (NIH) grants, as well as institutionally-funded research initiatives, provided the authors with a context for engaging undergraduate students through research within the field of psychology. City Tech is a Hispanic serving institution with an urban campus …

From Oral To Written Language: Scaffolding Literacy Development In A Kindergarten Classroom, Cynthia Leung

Journal of Contemporary Research in Education

The purpose of the present study was to explore how an experienced kindergarten teacher used oral language to scaffold her students in their development of written language skills. The research design was a yearlong qualitative case study that employed prolonged engagement, persistent observation, and triangulation. Data sources included participant observation, fieldnotes, audio and video recording of classroom literacy events, informal interviews with the teacher and students, photographs, and a collection of students’ drawings/writings. This article provides examples of read-aloud and writing events where the classroom teacher made connections between oral and written language or re-accented the students’ oral productions into …

Social Scholarship? Academic Communications In The Digital Age, Steven Weiland Oct 2017

Social Scholarship? Academic Communications In The Digital Age, Steven Weiland

Charleston Library Conference

A recent sign of the technological transformation of scholarship is the consolidation of views about the emergence of the “digital scholar,” a variation on the influential reform minded account of faculty work associated with Ernest Boyer’s Scholarship Reconsidered (1990). An essential feature of this new form of academic practice and identity is named “social scholarship,” or participation in scholarly communications via the growing variety of digital networks for professional interaction. Scholars and librarians can recognize the change while acknowledging the durability of academic workflow conventions. Libraries can guide the faculty in social scholarship and be gadflies in matters of the …

Tribalism Is Consuming The World, Aldemaro Romero Jr. Oct 2017

Tribalism Is Consuming The World, Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

There is a ghost wandering countries, societies, and even the halls of academia. It is the ghost of tribalism and that ghost is as old as the dawn of the human species.

One of the defining characteristics of people around the world, is to group ourselves for our own ben- efit. Since before any civilization could be described as such, we bound together to defend ourselves from other humans, for cooperating to seek food, to build our shelters, and many more things. That is why we fought wars, conquered territories, subjugate others, and developed characteristics that define ourselves based on …
