Using Ability Grouping To Examine The Effects Of Differentiated Instruction In An Undergraduate Course In Communication Sciences & Disorders, Katherine B. Green, Jacqueline Towson Feb 2022

Using Ability Grouping To Examine The Effects Of Differentiated Instruction In An Undergraduate Course In Communication Sciences & Disorders, Katherine B. Green, Jacqueline Towson

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Differentiated instruction is a student-centered approach to instruction that considers the differing characteristics and aspects of the learner. With increasing diversity in higher education, differentiated instruction is one strategy that instructors may use to facilitate student success. However, there is limited empirical research examining the effectiveness of differentiated instruction in higher education. Using a quasi-experimental pretest posttest group design, the effects of differentiation of instruction, specifically differentiation of content and variable grouping, on student content knowledge were examined in an undergraduate course in a Communication Sciences and Disorders program. Students in the intervention group scored significantly higher on final course …

The Effects Of Trauma On Identity Formation: Pursuing And Obtaining Individual Freedom In Emerson’S Nature And Creech’S Chasing Redbird, Mckenzie Hershberger Feb 2022

The Effects Of Trauma On Identity Formation: Pursuing And Obtaining Individual Freedom In Emerson’S Nature And Creech’S Chasing Redbird, Mckenzie Hershberger

English Senior Capstone

Nature and Chasing Redbird provide poignant examples of the restorative power found in the natural world, and a thorough analysis of the works and lives of the authors reveal past trauma created the need for this restoration. Traumatic experiences shape an individual’s thought processes, as each decision the individual makes is based upon fearing an uncertain outcome. Throughout Nature, Emerson references a child’s innocence, demonstrating that a child’s perspective has not yet been tainted by experience. Emerson idealizes his past childhood as he endured grievances that motivated him to confront his trauma while in nature himself. An example for Emerson’s …

From Renaissance To Robert: The Machiavellian Cycle Of Life, Death, And Rebirth, Noah Huseman Feb 2022

From Renaissance To Robert: The Machiavellian Cycle Of Life, Death, And Rebirth, Noah Huseman

English Senior Capstone

In this paper, I explore the recursive nature of cultural commentary as it is informed by evolution of the monster. As one culture rises to prominence, so does the monster which comments upon it. I specifically examine the cultural monstrosity of the Machiavellian archetype as it is portrayed across time, first placing Machiavelli's theory in its original context, then branching out to the cultural context surrounding its appearance in both the literature of Renaissance England and the stories of today. Once I set up the broader theoretical context, I probe more deeply into two literary depictions of the Machiavel: Iago …

Chinese Graduate Students’ Narratives And Sociolinguistic Advice Onintercultural Communication At Southern U.S. Universities, Chih-Hsin Hsu Feb 2022

Chinese Graduate Students’ Narratives And Sociolinguistic Advice Onintercultural Communication At Southern U.S. Universities, Chih-Hsin Hsu

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

Although intercultural communication competence can be developed through cross-cultural experiences and dialogues (Jin, Cooper & Golding, 2016) and involving interactions (Rodenborg & Boisen, 2013), studies show that Chinese graduate students considered advanced English speakers continuously report difficulties in engaging in “intercultural communication” with Native English Speakers (NESs) in the U.S. (e.g., Gareis, 2012; Xiao & Petraki, 2007). Drawn upon co-cultural theory, the narrative-research-design study utilizing 17 scenario-hypothesized interviews reveals the experiences of eight Chinese advanced-ESL graduate students as they describe sociolinguistic struggles and cultural variations in verbal communication with the dominant linguistic group-NESs on their campuses. Four main instructive themes …

Men At Peace: A Creative Ethnography, Henriette Blecher Feb 2022

Men At Peace: A Creative Ethnography, Henriette Blecher

Postgraduate

Men at Peace is a creative ethnography aiming to facilitate a functional bridge between polarising gender assumptions around communication and to communicate this bridge using poetry. Using an ethnographic approach underpinned by feminist gender theories, this project is a study of masculinities in contemporary Australian society. Stories of men’s experiences were gathered and then transformed into randomised five-lined cut up poems to reveal and understand social, emotional, spiritual, cultural, relational, and material realities of men. The stories men told during this ethnography supported the heteronormative understanding of masculinities that reinforced the narrative that “real men” should not express a wide …

Seeking Equity, Agility, And Sustainability In The Provision Of Emergency Remote Teaching During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Center For Teaching And Learning Takes An Expanded Role, Henry Trotter, Cheng-Wen Huang, Laura Czerniewicz

Higher Learning Research Communications

Objectives: The purpose of the study was to illuminate and assess the experiences and feelings of the staff of a center for teaching and learning at one South African university during the early months (April–June 2020) of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns when it switched from face-to-face teaching to emergency remote teaching (ERT). It explores the practical, operational, ethical, cultural, and emotional questions that the staff of this center dealt with as they supported the university in ERT provision.

Method: This paper draws on in-depth interviews with 23 staff members of the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT) who …

The Experiences Of Undergraduate Black Gay Men Who Use Hookup And Dating Apps While Attending A Predominantly White Institution, Tevis Denzell Bryant Jan 2022

The Experiences Of Undergraduate Black Gay Men Who Use Hookup And Dating Apps While Attending A Predominantly White Institution, Tevis Denzell Bryant

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of undergraduate Black gay men who use hook up and dating apps while attending predominantly White colleges and universities. In using intersectionality as my theoretical framework, I was able to discover the essence of the experiences that Black gay men face while using these platforms. Intersectionality assisted the study in identifying the systems of privilege and oppression that are present for Black gay men, specifically when attempting to date within the LGBTQ+ community (Cho et al., 2013; Collins, 2015; Garcia & Ortiz, 2013). Through this framework I additionally began to …
