General Education And Specialization: Are They Meeting The Needs Of Society?, Midge Smith, Midori Y. Banks Jan 1972

General Education And Specialization: Are They Meeting The Needs Of Society?, Midge Smith, Midori Y. Banks

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Panel 2 presented at the Association for General and Liberal Studies' Annual Meeting, which was held at Southern Illinois University, October 21st through 23rd, 1971.

The needs of society will best be met when the needs of all its members are being met.

Do general education and specialized education meet the needs of contemporary society? It is easier to evaluate specialized education. As to general education, we must first ask ourselves pertinent questions, such as "What are we actually expecting general and liberal education to do?"

An Inquiry Into The Piagetian Tradition In America As A Basis For A Philosophy Of Education At The Communityy College Level: A Quasi-Experimental Approach, Clinton J. Humbolt

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of a structural-developmental approach as a basis for a philosophy of education for the public community college of the Midwestern United States. The structural developmental approach was explored within the broader cognitive studies of the Piagetian tradition in America. The method of research employed was a combination of analysis of relevant literature and empirical investigation at a community college. This combination was explored in order to determine the possible abstraction of a structural-developmental pattern as a potential base for theory building. A research instrument was used to assess the …

The University, The Student And The Wizard Of Oz, Lynwood H. Bartley Jan 1972

The University, The Student And The Wizard Of Oz, Lynwood H. Bartley

Perspectives (1969-1979)

The teacher who demonstrates that choice is inevitable in the human situation and helps each student realize his responsibility to choose what he becomes, is doing an inestimable service for his students. Having become aware of this choice, the student learns that he has more control over what he sees, what he does, and how he interprets.

I do not assume that making someone aware presumes the absence of facts; I do assume the interrelation between facts. I do not want to see teaching or learning as a process move any further in the direction described by Marshall McLuhan, who …

General Education And Violence, Louis J. Andolino, John H. Humphries Jan 1972

General Education And Violence, Louis J. Andolino, John H. Humphries

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Since the issue of violence is of such paramount concern to the American public, it constitutes a pertinent topic for academic discussion and analysis. Because the topic of violence is an interesting and important issue of the day, germane to many fields, including general education, it was decided that the theme of this year's Association of General and Liberal Studies Conference would be General Education and Violence. This conference will be held on the campus of the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York on October 26-28, 1972.

Violence And Technology, John Humphries, Jeremy Mattson Jan 1972

Violence And Technology, John Humphries, Jeremy Mattson

Perspectives (1969-1979)

The level of violence varies, however, and in some societies it is considerably less than others. The reasons for this variance are hard to ascertain; but, I suspect, those reasons are of crucial importance if we are to fathom this subject.

From this view of the work of certain selected major American artists, work clustered roughly around the years 1930, 1940, and 1950, it is apparent that the artist was affected by technology, and more often than not one of the results of this influence was violence in the art. The two painters, Davis and Pollock, reflect a violence in …

FOCUS

Campus News
Change and potential change were the dominant features of spring at Colby. There was approval of limited coeducational housing by the board of trustees and a faculty vote on new graduation requirements ensuring academic vigor and maintaining curricular flexibility. The second Constitutional Convention April 7-9 recommended changes to the board which, if adopted, could lead to a more highly-developed sharing of responsibility among students, faculty, administrators and trustees.

Identification Of Experiences In Applied Biological Science And Agribusiness Of Seventh Grade Students, Roy D. Dillon, University Of Nebraska W. Walker

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

In a study to identify the applied biological science-oriented experiences of seventh grade students and to describe student aspirations for future study of applied biological and agribusiness subjects, a random sample of 1,286 7th-grade students was selected in Nebraska. The sample represented l0.l% of the 7th-grade students in Nebraska in 1970, and was selected by drawing a 5% random sample of schools within each of 8 mutually-exclusive class groupings as defined by the Nebraska State Department of Education.

It is clearly evident from the results described that 7th-grade students in Nebraska have gained considerable exploratory experiences through formal and informal …
