State Divestment, Reprivatization, And Peasants: Dialectical Transformations Within The Mexican Sugar Sector, Donna Chollett
State Divestment, Reprivatization, And Peasants: Dialectical Transformations Within The Mexican Sugar Sector, Donna Chollett
Anthropology Publications
The last decade has seen a critical reassessment of the role of the state in economic development, accompanied by substantial economic restructuring of Third World economies. One of the most profound manifestations of this transformation is the process of privatization. The sale of Mexico's state-owned sugar mills to private capital marks a historical turning point for the sugar sector and provides an opportunity to analyze the impact of privatization on rural communities, as peasants adjust to the changing structure of production and renegotiate their relationship with the Mexican state and the reprivatized sugar mill. The research examines reprivatization through a …
Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 1994, Central Bank Of Nigeria
Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 1994, Central Bank Of Nigeria
CBN Annual Report
In 1994, Nigeria faced economic challenges such as declining GDP growth, inflation, and a weakened external sector due to expansionary fiscal and monetary policies, political unrest, and labor issues. Despite this, the global economy saw stronger recovery in industrialized countries and developing regions like Asia and Latin America. The Nigerian economy struggled with slow growth, manufacturing decline, rising inflation, large budget deficit, and weakened external sector performance. Efforts to stabilize the exchange rate were hindered by differences between official and unofficial market rates. Internationally, there were improvements in the world economy with higher growth rates in developed and developing countries. …
Economic Development In Maine: Strategies And Opportunities, Steven Ballard, Stephanie Seguino, Charles S. Colgan
Economic Development In Maine: Strategies And Opportunities, Steven Ballard, Stephanie Seguino, Charles S. Colgan
Maine Policy Review
Changes in the national and international economies have forced Maine and other states to reexamine their approaches to economic development. No longer are the traditional approaches useful in the context of a global economy. Maine's present and future economic growth requires that the state respond to the realities of this new economic landscape. In this article, Steven Ballard, Stephanie Seguino and Charles Colgan put forth their thoughts and conclusions on the strategies and opportunities upon which Maine's economic development efforts should focus.
Electricity Costs And The Maine Economy: Review And Prospects, Charles S. Colgan
Electricity Costs And The Maine Economy: Review And Prospects, Charles S. Colgan
Maine Policy Review
Rising electricity costs over the past several years have set off alarm bells about the possible effects on economic growth in Maine. Efforts to at least reduce the rate of growth of electricity prices have led to charges and countercharges between the state's largest utility and many of the non-utility generators (NUG's), and resulted in major battles in the recent session of the Maine Legislature. In all of the discussion, however, there has been little information about two key questions: How high are Maine's electricity costs relative to other areas, and how sensitive is the Maine economy to changes in …

Defense Downsizing: The Economic Impacts In New England, Yolanda K. Kodrzycki
Defense Downsizing: The Economic Impacts In New England, Yolanda K. Kodrzycki
Maine Policy Review
Yoland R. Kodrzycki reviews the extent of New England’s dependency on defense and various measures of the severity of defense downsizing. The analysis is put in the broader context of the New England economy. Because the economy can provide opportunities or constraints, it is important to understand the general economic environment when designing a defense conversion strategy. This article is excerpted from the author’s remarks at a conference entitled “From Defense to Offense: Converting Maine’s Economy in a Time of Shrinking Military Expenditures,” which took place in Portland on June 13, 1994. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect official …
Maine's Defense Dependency And Its Effect On Economic Vitality, Laurie Lachance
Maine's Defense Dependency And Its Effect On Economic Vitality, Laurie Lachance
Maine Policy Review
With the continuing shift to a non-Cold War defense posture, Maine is experiencing its share of economic hardship from the reduction in federal defense spending. In the following article, Maine State Economist Laurie Lachance describes the depth and breadth of Maine's defense dependency and outlines what that portends for the future of Maine's economy.
From Cold War To Microchips: Stepping From The Past Into Our Future, Malcolm Forbes Jr.
From Cold War To Microchips: Stepping From The Past Into Our Future, Malcolm Forbes Jr.
Maine Policy Review
Malcolm "Steve" Forbes Jr., editor-in-chief of FORBES Magazine, looks often to history to explain the present and to predict the future. In an address to the 21st annual Governor's Economic Development Conference at the University of Maine last fall, Forbes identified two important trends, one grounded in the past (the Cold War), and one symbolic of the rapid change experienced at present (the microchip), in suggesting that the economic future for Maine and the nation is only limited by our willingness to give in to our fears about what that future holds. This article is an edited version of Forbes’ …
An Attitudinal Evaluation Of Collaboration In The Community Economic Development Process In Southwestern Ontario, Lisa Susanne Mccormick
An Attitudinal Evaluation Of Collaboration In The Community Economic Development Process In Southwestern Ontario, Lisa Susanne Mccormick
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Many small communities in Southwestern Ontario suffer from economic decline. Several areas have faced devastating plant closures and layoffs. In response, communities have been encouraged to adopt a community economic development strategy by senior levels of government. This strategy focuses on community participation, entrepreneurship and the retraining of the workforce. This thesis examines the accomplishments of eight predominantly rural areas in Southwestern Ontario. Attitudes and perceptions of sixty-four local actors involved in the CED process were evaluated. These eight areas received similar levels of funding and all have mechanisms in place for community economic development. However, the extent of CED …
Aggregate Convergence And Sectoral Specialization In Innovation, Mario Pianta, Daniele Archibugi
Aggregate Convergence And Sectoral Specialization In Innovation, Mario Pianta, Daniele Archibugi
Mario Pianta
Over the last 20 years OECD countries have converged in terms of their innovation, in parallel to the process of economic convergence and catching-up in technology. However, this has not led to a similarity in the sectoral strenghts of the majority of countries. Applying a measure of "technological distance" between pairs of countries based on patents, it is shown that nations have increased their technological specialization (i.e their sectoral differences) over the 1980s. An apparent paradox is pointed out, as countries converge by becoming more different and grow by becoming more specialized.
