The 2.27 Ma Aguelmane Sidi Ali monogenetic scoria cone was emplaced in a tectonic basin of the same name on the southern edge of the Bou-Anguer-Aïn-Nokra syncline in the eastern folded part of the Middle Atlas. Aguelmane Sidi Ali scoria cone was formed by a short-lived eruption of days to weeks. The eruptive dynamic recorded in the volcanic …

Watershed Surface Characteristics And Storm Distribution Impactson Low-Order Urban Stream Hydrology Response, C. Andrew Day, Garrett Seay Sep 2024

Watershed Surface Characteristics And Storm Distribution Impactson Low-Order Urban Stream Hydrology Response, C. Andrew Day, Garrett Seay

The Geographical Bulletin

This research observed and modeled rainfall-runoff processes for six ungauged low-order urban watersheds within the Louisville Metro area, KY for a variety of storm distributions. We collected rainfall/runoff event field data while surface biophysical data in the form of gridded elevation, landcover and soil type were also collected and processed for each watershed. These datasets enabled an adjustment of Green-Ampt infiltration loss and NRCS unit-hydrograph transform method time parameters to simulate runoff using the HEC-HMS rainfall-runoff model. Results indicated that impervious cover and watershed shape/hydraulic length most strongly influenced hydrograph responses, while positive-skew storm distributions resulted in higher peak runoff …

The Girl At The Baggage Claim: Explaining The East-West Culture Gap., Dawn M. Drake Sep 2024

The Girl At The Baggage Claim: Explaining The East-West Culture Gap., Dawn M. Drake

The Geographical Bulletin

The Girl at the Baggage Claim is an examination of cultural differences in how humans view the world. Jen creates two categories of personalities – the big pit and the flexi-self. Big pits are associated with western cultures and more self-centered and individualistic behaviors that focus on advancing one’s own causes ahead of others’. Flexi-selves, on the other hand, are more closely associated with eastern cultures, including Eastern Europe, and interdependent behaviors aimed at the betterment of the group, even if it is at the expense of the individual. The author provides a series of tests to help readers determine …

Introducing The Concept Of The “Causal Continuum” In Introductory Weather And Climate Courses, Brent R. Skeeter Sep 2024

Introducing The Concept Of The “Causal Continuum” In Introductory Weather And Climate Courses, Brent R. Skeeter

The Geographical Bulletin

In any introductory meteorology, climatology, Earth science, or physical geography course, students will likely gain a much greater understanding of the weather and/ or climate material if their course instruction is effectively rooted within the framework of why weather occurs and why climates exist. Indeed, without an early understanding of why weather even occurs, much of what is taught within an introductory course will likely never be fully grasped or appreciated by students. Along those lines, it should be extremely beneficial to include an explicit discussion of what is here termed the “causal continuum”, in the early portion of such …

Climate Change And Perceived Vulnerability: Gender, Heritage, And Religion Predict Risk Perception And Knowledge Of Climate Change In Hawaii, Kevin Showalter, David López-Carr, Daniel Ervin

The Geographical Bulletin

This study explores climate change related risk perception among residents of the ‘Big Island’ of Hawaii, an environmentally vulnerable region. Adapting established instruments, we investigated potential links among socio-demographic variables, risk perception, and perceived preparedness and knowledge, as they relate to climate change. Results reveal relationships between risk perceptions for climate change and gender, with females significantly more aware of the risks posed by climate change, but less prepared than men. Additionally, indigenous and native respondents felt that climate change events posed more risk and felt less prepared compared to non-indigenous. Results suggest that an understanding of how risk perceptions …

Geographic Distribution Of Public Health Hospitals In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Alhomaidhi

The Geographical Bulletin

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia City of Riyadh faces many challenges and problems in distributing public health services. The Ministry of Health (MOH) operates eight hospitals within the city, delivering a variety of basic, specialty, and emergency services. Population growth and urbanization has led to an imbalance in facility locations and service delivery for the city, which fails to adhere to the MOH’s recommendations. In this paper, nearest neighbor analysis, service area, and range analysis, as well as a spatial model are used to determine the distribution of hospitals, areas of under-coverage, and potential locations for new hospitals. This methodology …

An Automated Machine Learning Approach To The Retrieval Of Daily Soil Moisture In South Korea Using Satellite Images, Meteorological Data, And Digital Elevation Model, Nari Kim, Soo-Jin Lee, Eunha Sohn, Mija Kim, Seonkyeong Seong, Seung Hee Kim, Yangwon Lee Sep 2024

An Automated Machine Learning Approach To The Retrieval Of Daily Soil Moisture In South Korea Using Satellite Images, Meteorological Data, And Digital Elevation Model, Nari Kim, Soo-Jin Lee, Eunha Sohn, Mija Kim, Seonkyeong Seong, Seung Hee Kim, Yangwon Lee

Institute for ECHO Articles and Research

Soil moisture is a critical parameter that significantly impacts the global energy balance, including the hydrologic cycle, land–atmosphere interactions, soil evaporation, and plant growth. Currently, soil moisture is typically measured by installing sensors in the ground or through satellite remote sensing, with data retrieval facilitated by reanalysis models such as the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis 5 (ERA5) and the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS). However, the suitability of these methods for capturing local-scale variabilities is insufficiently validated, particularly in regions like South Korea, where land surfaces are highly complex and heterogeneous. In contrast, artificial intelligence …

What Is Old Is New Again: The Reintegration Of Dresden’S Landscape Into The Modern German State, Richard Wolfel Sep 2024

What Is Old Is New Again: The Reintegration Of Dresden’S Landscape Into The Modern German State, Richard Wolfel

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper examines the architecture of Dresden in the era of East/West reunification. Traditional theories of German national development have identified three foci for post-World War II development, the Geopolitics of Nostalgia that seeks to return German national identity to an era prior to World War II, Zero Point thinking that seeks to build a new Germany from the ashes of World War II and critical preservation has sought to preserve some Nazi landscapes in an effort to facilitate discussion on the controversial era. Being an East German city, however, Dresden was isolated from the development of West German identity …

Assessing Climate Changein Alabama Using Climatenormals, Jonathan Herbert, Jeffrey A. D. Caudill Sep 2024

Assessing Climate Changein Alabama Using Climatenormals, Jonathan Herbert, Jeffrey A. D. Caudill

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper uses climate normals to assess historic changes in temperature and precipitation in Alabama. Changes in temperature and precipitation are calculated between climate normals periods at 18 weather stations across the state and for the state as a whole. The earliest climate normals period for which data are available is 1931-60 and the most recent is 1981-2010. Results show that Alabama has gotten cooler and wetter over the whole period of record, particularly in the fall and winter. However, changes between climate normals periods show these trends are reversing

Geographical Variation In The Photosynthesis Characteristics Of Sugar Maple (Acer Saccharum) Lab- And Field-Grown Seedlings, David Goldblum, Christa Kennett, Alicia Lisowski Sep 2024

Geographical Variation In The Photosynthesis Characteristics Of Sugar Maple (Acer Saccharum) Lab- And Field-Grown Seedlings, David Goldblum, Christa Kennett, Alicia Lisowski

The Geographical Bulletin

A number of recent studies suggest that in light of anthropogenic climate change, sugar maple (Acer saccharum) may not be adapted to persist over much of its current range. We consider variation in the species’ photosynthetic properties across its range. Seeds from Tennessee, Illinois, and Michigan were grown under laboratory conditions and in two experimental plots in Illinois and Michigan forests. In the Michigan forest, seedlings derived from Michigan seeds had significantly higher rates of carbon assimilation than those from Illinois. In the Illinois forest, seedlings from Tennessee had significantly greater carbon assimilation rates and light saturation points than seedlings …

Weather Influences On Raptor Migration Along The Kittatinny Ridge, Pennsylvania, Tara E. Gettig, Timothy W. Hawkins Sep 2024

Weather Influences On Raptor Migration Along The Kittatinny Ridge, Pennsylvania, Tara E. Gettig, Timothy W. Hawkins

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper analyzes the relationship between weather patterns and bird migration to determine the feasibility of a site-specific migration forecast. Autumn migration data from Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Pennsylvania for ten species were correlated with individual weather variables. Stepwise multiple linear regressions revealed a positive relationship with raptor migration to northwesterly winds and wind speed and an inverse relationship to sea level pressure. Composite maps were created using data from days with the greatest migration counts for each species and categorized by synoptic situations. A relationship between bird migration and cold-front passage was revealed, with five of the species having their …

No. 02: Impacts Of Covid-19 Policy Measures On Migration And Food Security In Ecuador, Mercedes Eguiguren, Cheryl Martens

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

The COVID-19 pandemic had profound effects on Ecuador, exacerbated by pre-existing weaknesses in the public health system, economic austerity policies, and social inequalities. The reliance on containment measures, combined with insufficient social support, resulted in severe economic and social decline. Migrants, already a vulnerable group, were further marginalized during the pandemic, facing exclusion from social protection programs and increased food insecurity. This report examines the impacts of COVID-19 policy measures on migration and food security in Ecuador, focusing on urban contexts, particularly the capital city of Quito. The findings underscore the need for more integrated research and policy approaches that …

Climate Hazards And Human Migration: Literature Review, Anna Ivanova, Deepti Singh, Pronoy Rai, Claire Richards, Hugo Vasconcelos, Michael Goldsby

International & Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Human populations are migrating as a result of climate change. We conducted a systematic literature review examining the relationship between several climate hazards and migration flows. We reviewed 58 empirical studies between 2010 and 2023 that examined current and future migration related to acute and long-term climate hazards. The results indicate that the relationship between climate hazards and migration is diverse and depends on a range of socio-economic factors. Droughts and rising temperatures have a major impact on both international and domestic migration. Our review also reveals that multiple climate hazards collectively tend to intensify domestic migration toward urban areas, …

Indiana Time Law And Its Detrimental Effects, John F. Gaski Sep 2024

Indiana Time Law And Its Detrimental Effects, John F. Gaski

The Geographical Bulletin

The most enduring and contentious public policy issue in Indiana history may be the seemingly prosaic matter of “what time is it?” This analysis focuses on the implications of the State of Indiana’s recent change to daylight-saving time in conjunction with near-statewide Eastern time . I argue that the economic and commercial basis for the new temporal regimen is erroneous, and that its educational and humane implications are substantial . Finally, I outline a proposal for resolution of these issues . Although the concentration here is the Indiana situation, lessons are generalizable to other states, counties, and regions facing similar …

The Transportation Disadvantaged And The Right To The City In Syracuse, New York, Kafui Ablode Attoh

The Geographical Bulletin

Drawing on the idea of the right to the city, this paper focuses on the challenges facing the transportation disadvantaged in Syracuse, N .Y . This paper will begin by focusing on two programs aimed at transporting welfare recipients to work: the Rides for Work and Wheels for Work programs . This paper will then examine transit activism in Syracuse as it emerged, first in debates over wheelchair lifts on public buses in the 1980s and second as it has emerged in more contemporary organizing efforts aimed at promoting transit awareness . Through these four case studies, this paper argues …
