The Spatial Variation Of Voting Behaviour In Canada In 1963, Alex Yin-Cheung Mok Jan 1970

The Spatial Variation Of Voting Behaviour In Canada In 1963, Alex Yin-Cheung Mok

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Previous studies in different countries have unfolded consequential relationships between a number of socio-economic factors and voting behavior. Ethnicity, religion, trade or profession were among the most useful voter characteristics in explaining party preference. While hypotheses of voting behavior for Canada are also prolific, most of them were based upon local studies. The present study of 53 selected incorporated cities in 1963 general election attempts to test such hypotheses at the national level. The majority of the proposed independent variables were derived from the previous case studies. The hypotheses were tested by means of a computerized multiple regression analysis.

The Pattern Of Religious Institution In The Northwest Urban Fringe Of Omaha, Nebraska, 1968, Grace R. Gardner

Student Work

Most writers attempt, at the outset, to define the subject of their discourse. To be certain of capturing the essence of an idea or concept, they will turn to renowned scholars and practitioners in the field and derive a composite of a wide array of views and approaches to the problem. Such an attempt In the field of religion reveals so many definitions and such variance between them, that it is soon apparent no simple definition will suffice. Is it intellectual acceptance of an idea, ideal, or code of ethics which binds men together philosophically, or is it formal membership …

Cleared Farm Land In Upper Lake States, 1910-1964, John Fraser Hart Jan 1969

Cleared Farm Land In Upper Lake States, 1910-1964, John Fraser Hart

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A cartographic analysis of fluctuations in cleared farm land acreage in each county of the Upper Lake slates al each census between 1910 and 1964 is based on standard deviations from the mean acreage for the county. The smallest relative fluctuations have occurred in counties with the largest percentages of their area in cleared farm land. Peak acreages were attained in most Michigan counties by the time of World War I, but acreages continued to increase in Wisconsin and Minnesota until World War II, and even since that time in some western Minnesota counties.

The Challenge Of Historical Geography, Louis Seig Jan 1969

The Challenge Of Historical Geography, Louis Seig

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

As geography changes with the times, traditional techniques, such as historical geography, should be reassessed to insure their relevance. Historical geography is evaluated in terms of definition, use, and prospects. Teaching of the methods of historical geography is advocated to equip students with tools rather than with regional descriptions of historical geographic information .

Problems In Transportation Of Animals, Alice M. Wagner Jan 1969

Problems In Transportation Of Animals, Alice M. Wagner

Animal Welfare Collection

This afternoon we are considering the problems involved in the transportation of animals. Undoubtedly we have all had people problems as we travel by car, train and by air, and with the increase of travel things seem to be growing worse instead of better. I commuted from my home in New Jersey to Philadelphia for 18 1/2 years - a round trip of five hours - so I know plenty of things that can happen in transportation and commutation.

So it is with animals. An increasing number of animals are being shipped - shipped as pets, shipped as meat animals, …

Some Computer And Isodensitracer Applications In Geography, Avi Degani Jan 1969

Some Computer And Isodensitracer Applications In Geography, Avi Degani

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The use of computers in geography has contributed greatly to the improvement of mapping, has offered solutions to cartographic problems, and has introduced new approaches and potentialities to geographic spatial analysis: Three-dimensional maps, especially since automatically produced, provide a great potential for mapping statistical and topographic surfaces, for building solid models, dynamic mapping and simulation. The use of the isodensitracer technique suggests solutions to many traditional cartographic problems and eliminates many errors inherent to the common manual procedure of isoline mapping.

County Seats Of Northeast Iowa: A Multivariate Classification, William E. Blake Jan 1969

County Seats Of Northeast Iowa: A Multivariate Classification, William E. Blake

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the study was to classify, or group, the fifteen county seats of northeast Iowa according to selected demographic, social, and economic phenomena. To achieve such groupings various methods and techniques of multivariate analysis were utilized. The desire to group the county seats based upon their likenesses or homogeneous traits was paramount. A brief historical overview of Iowa, and a discussion of the reasons for county seat selection, were used to set the background for a multivariate classification of northeast Iowa county seats. Selected accounts of northeast Iowa county establishment and organization were cited as an introductory aid …

Review Of Geography Of Religions By David E. Sopher, Robert Stoddard Mar 1968

Review Of Geography Of Religions By David E. Sopher, Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

This is the first book written in English dealing exclusively with the geography of religion. Consequently it contributes to the field of cultural geography by organizing some ideas and scattered publications dealing with the geography of religion into a single text. The major disappointment with this publication is the lack of consideration about several vital geographic questions. It is true that a small survey text cannot cover all aspects of the field, so some topics and previous studies may need to be omitted. Unfortunately the weakness of this book is not its size but its emphasis. Too many pages are …

Review Of Bhutan: A Physical And Cultural Geography By Pradyumna P. Karan., Robert Stoddard Mar 1968

Review Of Bhutan: A Physical And Cultural Geography By Pradyumna P. Karan., Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

This “preliminary geographical appraisal” of Bhutan is an important contribution to knowledge about an unfamiliar country. Part of the contribution results from information collected by Dr. Karan during recent expeditions. Some field data are presented in the form of new maps, including those of population distribution and important valleys. (An accompanying map with settlement features on a shaded-relief base appeared earlier as Map Supplement No. 5, A.A.G. Annals.) Also, the author's bibliography and assemblage of previously scattered materials will aid future studies of the Himalayan state.

Unfortunately the book will have limited value for many geographers. The numerous pictures, …

Decline Of Railroad Passenger Services In Minnesota, Matti Kaups, Kalevi Rikkinen Jan 1968

Decline Of Railroad Passenger Services In Minnesota, Matti Kaups, Kalevi Rikkinen

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Since 1920 there has been an accelerating discontinuance of passenger train service in Minnesota. Railroads first tried to meet competition for passenger services from bus lines, streetcars, and private automobiles by reducing the frequency of schedules and by changing to mixed freight-passenger trains. These steps were followed by discontinuance of passenger services on branch lines or in marginal areas. The Transportation Act of 1958 created conditions favorable to continuance of unprofitable passenger schedules, but curtailment has continued.

This paper is concerned primarily with the declining role of Class I railroads as passenger carriers in the United States, with Minnesota as …

Mark Jefferson: Geographer, Geoffrey J. Martin Jan 1968

Mark Jefferson: Geographer, Geoffrey J. Martin

University Archives Book Collection

The study of the life and works of Mark Jefferson, one of the most scholarly geographers ever to grace the U.S. scene, is an attempt to fill, in part, the void in the literature of geographers' lives and thoughts and contribute to an understanding of the geography of American geographers.

His influence on the development of this professional field in the first half of the present century was critical. As professor of geography at the Michigan State Normal College (1901-39), he schooled future generations of teachers in the subject matter of geography, influenced geographic thinking by his numerous writings and …

A Descriptive Model Of The Sweet Corn And Pea Processing Industry Of Southern Minnesota, David P. Brennan Jan 1968

A Descriptive Model Of The Sweet Corn And Pea Processing Industry Of Southern Minnesota, David P. Brennan

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This research project was initiated to construct and test a model of the sweet corn and pea processing industry of Minnesota. The model is a composite abstract consisting of several basic theories of general application and several hypotheses which were formulated to consider the unique properties associated with sweet corn and pea processing. These are related to the agricultural and industrial factors which are inseparable parts of sweet corn and pea processing. Testing the model concerned the evaluation of the theories and hypotheses with regard to the real life situation. The basic concepts used in the model were refined and …

The Effects Of Geographical And Climatic Setting On The Economic Advantages Of Alternative Flood Control Measures, Clyde R. Dempsey, L. Douglas James Jan 1968

The Effects Of Geographical And Climatic Setting On The Economic Advantages Of Alternative Flood Control Measures, Clyde R. Dempsey, L. Douglas James

KWRRI Research Reports

It has long been realized that tributary urban development and channel improvement greatly affect the flow regime in a given watershed. A previous study used the Stanford Watershed Model to derive relationships expressing how the flood peaks in Sacramento, California, might be expected to vary with changing conditions of urbanization, channelization, and tributary drainage area. In order to observe the effects of climatic setting and geographical location on these relationships, the same type of analysis was applied to a drainage area near Louisville, Kentucky.

If reservoir storage is to be considered in a flood control program, it is necessary to …
