Raiders Of The Lost Ark And The Hollywood Tradition: Nostalgia, Parody, And Postmodernism, Michael F. Deters
Raiders Of The Lost Ark And The Hollywood Tradition: Nostalgia, Parody, And Postmodernism, Michael F. Deters
Masters Theses
The film Raiders of the Lost Ark was released in 1981 to immediate success. Using a noticeably retrospective style, Raiders appealed to the public's desire to experience once again the same kind of viewing pleasure that Hollywood offered in the classical period. Accordingly, the film's nostalgic recreation of classical Hollywood entails a reliance on type characters, tough dialogue, and stock situations--with an overarching emphasis on maintaining a breakneck pace in its action. The appeal for the viewer, then, involves the satisfaction of a need to return to a superficially "simpler" time when the movies themselves were "simpler"--as they fulfilled the …

Me propongo aquí bosquejar brevemente el recorrido argumental que dio sustancia al presente trabajo. Me gustaría empezar citando a Cortázar.

Seduction, Control, & The Search For Authenticity: Madonna's Truth Or Dare, E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D.
Communications: Faculty Publications
Maddonnas' 1991 film Truth or Dare, based on her 1990 “Blond Ambition” tour—itself a combination of pop music and performance art— defies easy categorization. It is a “docudrama” of sorts: part documentary, part concert film, part dramatic enactment. By combining various filmic styles and traditions. Truth or Dare recreates certain long-standing cultural dichotomies between, for instance, onstage and offstage, public and private, reality and appearance, or truth and artifice. The film replicates such oppositions only to then question their continuing validity. Binary distinctions in Truth or Dare prove more apparent than real, more fleeting than differentiating. Ultimately, I believe, …

Female Spectators (14.1), E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D.
Communications: Faculty Publications
This introduction to Female Spectators gives a concise account of the major feminist debates in film studies and argues for more work to be done in incorporating filmmaking practice, spectatorship and textual analysis. All the contributors to this book share a concern to emphasis women’s presence in, rather than absence from, the “cinematic experience”

Values, Nation Building And Control: The Singapore Mass Media In The Next Lap, Denise G. Tan
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
1990 marked a significant change in the political history of Singapore – it was the year Mr. Lee Kuan Yew handed over his role as Singapore’s leader to Mr. Goh Chok Tong. Termed “The Next Lap”, this new period of Singapore’s history was heralded in as a period of change and new directions for Singapore and Singaporeans. This thesis explores the introduction of the Next Lap, the promises of positive changes and the potential effect this new era may have on the Singapore Government’s intimate relationship with and control of the media as a Nation Building apparatus. Deleuze And Film Semiotics, James Morrison
Deleuze And Film Semiotics, James Morrison
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
On first reflection, none of the usual categories seem to apply to Gilles Deleuze's work in film theory. In fact, Deleuze's texts appear willfully to frustrate the expected set of questions: What is the relation of Deleuze's texts to film theory? What is their relation to semiotics, to the taxonomy and methodology of semiotics as it has been rehearsed by post-structuralist film theoreticians?
