Le "Devenir Féminin" Dans La Sociéte Moderne Occidentale À Travers Les Deux Romans De Virginie Despentes, Nadia Louar
Le "Devenir Féminin" Dans La Sociéte Moderne Occidentale À Travers Les Deux Romans De Virginie Despentes, Nadia Louar
Dissertations and Theses

Empowered Narratives : Drama Praxis And The Archetype As A Means To Authentic Voice For Women, Beryl Chalk
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis contests the status of gender as a social construct by considering how women develop a personal ethnography when engaging in drama and expressive arts practices. There is no known research on drama praxis as a signifier to Australian women's identity, a major focus of this work will be, 'Who has the authority over women's expression and means of expression? Who has the authority to interpret the experience? Who has authority over other people's experience?' This thesis addresses the internalised- oppression which refers to the process by which women internalise the 'fictionalised' reality prescribed to them as women marked …

A Message From The New Executive Director, Jill Dolan
A Message From The New Executive Director, Jill Dolan
Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
I'm honored and pleased to be succeeding Marty Duberman as Executive Director of CLAGS. I taught in theatre and drama and women's studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before I accepted my present position in the PhD Program in Theatre at the CUNY Graduate Center. At Madison, teaching and writing in lesbian performance theory, the fact that a national center for lesbian and gay studies had been established in New York gave me a sense that the field in which I worked was arriving, securing its legitimacy and its vibrancy and insisting on its visibility. In my two years at …

A Good Country Gentlewoman: Catherine Clive's Epistolary Autobiography, Joallen Bradham
Faculty Articles
Unable to play the gentlewoman on stage, Catherine Clive lived the part in retirement. Her letters document the days and ways of the gentlewoman, Clive's need to assume the role, and the actress's awareness that she performs. In all details, Clive's gentlewoman conforms to contemporary expectations of that figure.

James Joyce And His Other Language: The "Abnihilization Of The Etym", Lisa J. Fluet '96
Fenwick Scholar Program
This thesis proposes to say something new about Joyce's female characters that would in a sense redeem Joyce from the sharp criticism his texts encounter from feminist theorists. To achieve this, I have worked to dismantle the notion of literal, primary-word meanings to expose the etymon's origin from nothing. By tracing points in various works of Joyce where the word, the basis for most patriarchal literary representation, is not revered, but instead is dismantled, proven inadequate, and ultimately "abnihilizated," I attempt to demonstrate that female characters kept outside active participation with the word warrant serious consideration, as harbingers of a …

Antimodern, Modern, And Postmodern Millay: Contexts Of Revaluation, Cheryl Walker
Antimodern, Modern, And Postmodern Millay: Contexts Of Revaluation, Cheryl Walker
Scripps Faculty Publications and Research
In this chapter, Walker examines questions concerning renewed scholarly interest in Edna St. Vincent Millay toward the end of the twentieth century. Specifically, these questions center on whether to rethink the principles of establishing the canon of American literature--indeed, whether the poet changes literary fashions or literary fashions change the poet. Walker's answer is the latter, and her essay examines how Millay is different received through three different periods: antimodern, modern, and postmodern. She argues that whether a poet becomes central to literary study has less to do with the "quality" of the poetry than with complex cultural factors that …

Annual Report 1996, Kathleen Adams
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
When our year began with the Annual General Meeting we had the opportunity to accept our new Constitution. This enabled us to apply for and receive Charitable Status which we hope will be a useful situation for us in the future. At the meeting we were afraid that we were to lose a wonderful treasurer with no sign of a replacement but John Bunn agreed to stay on until the end of September while our search continued. Before that deadline Sally-Ann Pye offered her services and she has worked well and efficiently with us since, proving a helpful and enthusiastic …

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
On 5 March 1896 a paragraph appeared in the Daily News from a correspondent who wrote:
Will you allow me through your columns to appeal to the countless admirers of one of England's greatest teachers and of the world's most perfect artists? That portion of 'Leafy Warwickshire' in the midst of which little Marian Evans drew her first inspiration, literally beneath some of the very oaks which formed part of the classic Forest of Arden, has of late years proved to be a teeming storehouse of mineral wealth, and a large and vastly increasing industrial population at the present moment …

This thesis, 8 Collection of Gay Plays, contains three one act plays which reflect different aspects,of gay life. In the first play, "Awakening," a recent college graduate is forced to deal with his own sexuality by watching those around him embrace their respective homosexuality or bisexuality. The second play is a romantic comedy. P.K., the central character in "Something's Cooking in the Kitchen with P.K.," must choose between two men who say they love him. Asses And Wits: The Homoerotics Of Mastery In Satiric Comedy, Mario Digangi
Asses And Wits: The Homoerotics Of Mastery In Satiric Comedy, Mario Digangi
Publications and Research
This essay explores master-servant homoeroticism in three seventeenth-century satiric comedies: Ben Jonson's Epicoene and Volpone and George Chapman's The Gentleman Usher. Whereas "sodomy" always signifies social disorder, "homoerotic" useful for describing same-sex relations that are socially normative or orderly. Thus homoerotic master-servant relations become "sodomitical" only when they are perceived to threaten social order. In Epicoene, the character associated with the disorder of "sodomy" is neither Dauphine or Epicoene, but the "unnatural" Morose, even though he has not literally had sex with the boy he marries. The erotic master-servant relationship in Volpone is sodomitical because it transgresses against …
