Belle S. Spafford: Leader Of Women, Gayle Morby Chandler Jan 1983

Belle S. Spafford: Leader Of Women, Gayle Morby Chandler

Theses and Dissertations

This historical/descriptive study analyzes the speaking career of Belle S. Spafford and attempts to document the relationship between her speaking and her influence with her peers. For over fifty years, the dedicated woman served as a spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the National Council of Women, briding the gap between the secular and religious world of women. A rhetorical analysis of four speeches indicates the following findings: Mrs. Spafford appealed to her audiences through a focus on shared values; she had credibility because of her positions of authority and used it wisely; she effectively …

The Hyde Amendment: Its Impact On Low Income Women With Unwanted Pregnancies, Marjorie R. Sable Sep 1982

The Hyde Amendment: Its Impact On Low Income Women With Unwanted Pregnancies, Marjorie R. Sable

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The Hyde amendment, which has been in effect since 1977, restricts federal funding of abortions for Medicaid-eligible women "except where the life of the mother would be endangered if a fetus were carried to term." It has virtually eliminated federally financed abortions and the undue hardships it places on poor women foreshadow contemporary developments in abortion politics today for all women.

Working Women's Marginalization In Denmark: Traditional Assumptions And Economic Consequences Of Social And Labor Market Policies, Jennifer G. Schirmer Sep 1982

Working Women's Marginalization In Denmark: Traditional Assumptions And Economic Consequences Of Social And Labor Market Policies, Jennifer G. Schirmer

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Although it cannot be said that women's marginality in the labor market in Denmark from the 1960s to the present was 'planned' in any formal sense, the premise behind social and labor market policy measures, such as daycare and maternity leave, that women primarily serve as part-time service workers to increase economic growth, indicates a form of assumed and prescribed secondariness for women. By engaging the market and the family on strictly traditional terms, the social policy and labor market measures enacted to encourage women's entrance into the labor force in the late 1960s serve to institutionalize women's marginality within …

Our Own Worst Enemies: Women Opposed To Woman Suffrage, Jeanne Howard Sep 1982

Our Own Worst Enemies: Women Opposed To Woman Suffrage, Jeanne Howard

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Opposition by women to a movement which identifies itself as for women is not new. In the late 19th and early 20th century female anti-suffragists organized to oppose "the burden of the ballot." The writings of the "antis" (as the female anti suffragists became known) demonstrate an allegiance to class over gender, a sense of powerlessness beyond traditional roles and a fear of change. Exploring this early anti movement may give us a better understanding of the women opposed to the contemporary woman's movement.

Everywoman's Guide To Colleges And Universities, The Feminist Press

Women's Studies Quarterly

We are printing the official QUESTIONNAIRE of the Everywoman's Guide project in this issue of the Women's Studies Quarterly in order to make its contents accessible to a large constituency interested in healthy educational environments for women. By the time you read this page, every college and university president in the U.S. will have received a copy of the questionnaire, and will have been alerted to the fact that it is also appearing in these pages. Because of the questionnaire's complexity, we have suggested to presidents that they may want to make use of Everywoman's Guide Committees to facilitate responses. …

Attitudes Of Mid-Life Mothers Toward Their Daughters' Adolescence, Terri Sweig Dec 1980

Attitudes Of Mid-Life Mothers Toward Their Daughters' Adolescence, Terri Sweig

Theses

This paper discusses the ways in which mid-life mothers reflected their attitudes toward the emerging womanhood of their adolescent daughters through art work. It concerns natural and normal developmental stresses which occur as mothers and daughters pass through difficult life stages somewhat simultaneously. A non-clinical group of four mothers between 38 and 44-years old with daughters between 14 and 17-years old responded to five specifically designed drawing tasks derived from literature on mid-life and mothers and daughters. Information was elicited regarding each mother's relationship to her own mother, the negotiation of her own adolescence, and her present self-concept. Discussion of …

Careers Of Women Civil Rights Activists, Rhoda Lois Blumberg Sep 1980

Careers Of Women Civil Rights Activists, Rhoda Lois Blumberg

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Stages in the civil rights careers of a sample of women active in northern communities were studied. Committed to racial justice, most intensified their participation in the early 1960's. In the second half of the decade, the "Black Power" phase, roles for whites became fewer. Organizations experienced changes in membership and direction; factionalism ensued. Many, women welcomed black leadership and played roles in new black-lead community agencies. Arrests of blacks allegedly involved in riots elicited support in the formation of defense committees and prison reform organizations. Later, many women entered human service professions; they chose jobs with poor, minority or …

Women's Centers At The University Of Texas/Arlington: A Model For Growth, Jeanne Ford, Barbara Brown Apr 1979

Women's Centers At The University Of Texas/Arlington: A Model For Growth, Jeanne Ford, Barbara Brown

Women's Studies Quarterly

The University of Texas at Arlington offers unique educational services for women through three administratively separate but collaborating programs that focus on women's interests and needs. These programs, each with its own coordinator, are officially designated as the Center for Women's Studies, the Women's Center, and Transitions: Displaced Homemakers Center.

Women's studies at UTA is not at present a formal program. The courses are offered through receptive academic departments. Women's studies faculty and students are engaged in research, teaching, and learning with an academic orientation and are consultants to and participants in activities at the Women's Center. It is a …

Women's Studies In West Germany: Community Vs. Academy, Tobe Levin Jan 1979

Women's Studies In West Germany: Community Vs. Academy, Tobe Levin

Women's Studies Quarterly

Rape, abortion, homes for battered women—these would appear to be the issues of paramount concern to West German feminists at the present time. But high on the list of priorities for 1978 has also been the question of women's studies, a subject of passionate, often bitter debate in recent months, with sides clearly drawn between proponents of differing allegiances. As in the United States, but with sharp differences, the discussion in West Germany focuses on the relationships among women's studies, the women's movement, and the community.

Activists here have been debating the proposed establishment of a "Women's Research Institute" at …

Indications Of Feminist Influence On Contemporary Social Work Practice, Clara Elizabeth Miller Jan 1978

Indications Of Feminist Influence On Contemporary Social Work Practice, Clara Elizabeth Miller

Dissertations and Theses

It is criticism of traditional theory and methods, and the advocacy of new approaches that feminists have tried to present to social workers and to other professionals in mental health and other social services. The feminist goal has been to convince social workers and others to modify their beliefs and practice in order to be more helpful (as the feminists believe) to women. In this study of the beliefs and practice of social workers in Oregon, I attempt to find out to what extent, ten years after the "rebirth of feminism," they have adopted feminist beliefs and recommendations for practice.

Images Of Women In Medieval Literature: A Selected Bibliography, Susan Schibanoff Oct 1976

Images Of Women In Medieval Literature: A Selected Bibliography, Susan Schibanoff

Women's Studies Quarterly

This bibliography focuses on images of women in medieval literature rather than on medieval women writers for several reasons. First, the study of literary images of women can provide a real sense of the climate in which the individual medieval female artist might have lived, a necessary first step in evaluating her contributions. Second, the problem of identifying the authorship of anonymous medieval literary works is a large one. It is becoming apparent, however, that there were probably more good medieval women writers than those few we currently identify—Marie of France, Eleanor of Aquitane, Margery Kempe, Christine de Pisan, the …

A Profile Of Women Volunteers, Vana O'Brien Jan 1976

A Profile Of Women Volunteers, Vana O'Brien

Dissertations and Theses

Volunteerism has been the subject of much controversy in the last few years inasmuch as it is so often identified as a women's issue. Many areas, previously considered the rightful domain of women, have come under scrutiny as women question the value of their participation in “feminine activities.” As stereotypes are examined, fictions are explored and facts determined so that these former stereotypes can be reviewed in a new light. Many persons are becoming familiar via the popular media with these stereotyped roles (i.e., woman as “Good Mother”) , and learn that, for example, “good mothering” is not a monolithic …

Structure And Staffing Of Programs, Florence Howe Apr 1975

Structure And Staffing Of Programs, Florence Howe

Women's Studies Quarterly

[This is the first in a series of brief essays on various aspects of women's studies. In the Summer issue, Ms. Howe will write on curriculum. We welcome responses, in the form of letters or essays, to Ms. Howe's views.]

In the sixties, I surveyed the free university movement which had spawned in its brief lifetime of some three years upwards of 300 parallel or counter-institutions on or near campuses as diverse as San Francisco State College and the University of Pennsylvania. That movement did not accomplish its short-range goal: to effect change at host institutions. Indeed, those free universities …

from the UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, SEATTLE

Because the degree which our students receive reads, "B.A. General Studies," students have asked for some means to show on their transcript the women-oriented courses they have taken in their Women Studies concentration. Thus, beginning in summer 1975, many of the courses that would have been listed under General and Interdisciplinary Studies (GIS) will now be listed under Women 290 or Women 490. These new numbers are for special topics in Women Studies and augment our three (only) permanently numbered courses: Women 200 (Introduction to Women Studies), Women 310 (Women and the Law) and …

A Comparison Of Socialization And The Current Attitudes Towards Personal And Feminist Issues Of Women Over 65, Gayle Austin, Anna Belle Sime Jan 1975

A Comparison Of Socialization And The Current Attitudes Towards Personal And Feminist Issues Of Women Over 65, Gayle Austin, Anna Belle Sime

Dissertations and Theses

Women, as feminist and as familist, have been in many varied ways the subjects of study. They have been studied as black women, middle-aged women, sexual women, women in poverty, women in prison, women raped, executives, celebrities, lesbians and homemakers. The classifications and combinations approached infinity. Now older women are becoming a more popular research topic, as their numbers increase with medical attainments. With the increasing participation of older “sisters” in such organizations as the National Organization for Women, and the advent of groups such as the gray panthers, it has become apparent that there are no age barriers to …

Affirmative Action Under Attack, Sheila Tobias Oct 1974

Affirmative Action Under Attack, Sheila Tobias

Women's Studies Quarterly

It is doubtful that serious discussion of Richard A. Lester's book on affirmative action (Antibias Regulations of Universities: Faculty Problems and Their Solutions, McGraw-Hill, 1974) can ever undo the damage caused by the flurry of misleading articles that appeared about the book in the New York Times, Newsweek, and The Chronicle of Higher Education six months ago. "Minority Hiring Said to Hurt Colleges," the New York Times headlined its front-page piece, continuing that minority hiring had caused a "lowering of standards and an undermining of faculty quality." Readers were left to assume that Lester had hard …

Sexism In The Social Work Curriculum, Mary C. Schwartz Oct 1974

Sexism In The Social Work Curriculum, Mary C. Schwartz

Women's Studies Quarterly

The purpose of this paper is to examine parts of the social work curriculum in order to discover the various kinds of sexist bias present in the materials used in social work education. My intent is to give a sense of what these sexist biases might be by discussing some concrete illustrations from materials used in two basic social work courses, "human growth and development" and "family casework." The course on human growth and development is supposed to provide part of the crucial knowledge base that a social worker needs in order to formulate a psychosocial diagnosis and treatment plan. …
